City allocates $1M to road renovations, receives matching grant
A handful of Logansport streets are due for a makeover. The Logansport City Council allocated a little more than $1 million toward street revitalization projects during a special meeting Monday evening. The funds will be matched through Indiana Department of Transportation's Community Crossings Grant. The deadline to apply for the grant is Friday, so the City's allocation was pushed through in one meeting instead of the standard two meetings. Renovation work will be different depending on the road. In most cases, they'll be grinded down to create a smoother surface for repaving. Some roads will also receive things like sensor loops, which interact with traffic lights to make sure cars don't have to wait at red lights for too long. The project will not impact tax rates. The revitalization work will affect: * Industrial Boulevard * Billiard Drive * Mall Road * Yorktown Road * Cass Plaza Drive * 18th Street from the bridge to the railroad crossing * West Roselawn from East Market Street to George Street * East Main Street from Hoosier Heartland to the light at 18th Street * East Miami Avenue from Sixth Street to West Market Street * West Broadway from Front Street to Central Avenue Street Commissioner Chad Hassett explained a recent survey ranked the conditions of Logansport's roads on a scale from 1-10, with lower numbers representing worse conditions. When putting together the 2025 Street Revitalization Plan list, he tried to pick roads that received a ranking lower than 5 and wouldn't be ripped up soon while the city uses grant money to replace lead water lines throughout town. The timeline for road renovations will depend on weather. By Hassett's estimate, some roads could see work begin in late March or early April.
