Trackside buffet fuels race car drivers for Detroit Grand Prix

Detroit Grand Prix drivers and their crews spend hours at the track. So what do they eat? Many go with food from Scheper Event Group, whose buffet-style mobile restaurant travels with different race series. Kaitlin Scheper, who is overseeing Detroit's operation, said their 11-person crew is feeding 200-400 people for each meal at Detroit Christ Church, located along the race route. This is a small operation relative to some of the company's catering, where it feeds up to 1,500 people a meal, she said. This is Scheper's second year working with their mobile kitchen set up in the church parking lot. Many times, Scheper sets up its dining area in a big tent, but the church provides indoor seating and relief from the elements. The church can usually seat 120 comfortably, the church's associate for communications, Bethann Tesluk, said, but the Schepers crew can get teams in and out quickly throughout meal periods. Scheper said the meal space can be a place for drivers and crews to catch a break from the track and pits as well as to catch up with and banter with former co-workers and opponents they've known for many years. What do they eat? Schepers provides an array of foods, including salads, hot dogs, fried chicken, vegan options and more, but the driver-specific buffet is usually plain pasta or rice, a steamed vegetable and a simple meat, like chicken breast, Scheper said. 'This is a huge positive to the (Prix) series, just having this as an option for the teams because it's one less thing for the teams to have to worry about,' Scheper said. 'They don't have to necessarily worry about where I'm going to go get lunch for my crew when they're in the middle of a race, they know that there's an option on site.' Schepers Event Group coordinates with the race officials, but drivers and their teams pay by meal, with a heads up in advance, if they plan to eat with Schepers. Schepers Event Group is a family business that's been around for 30 years. Scheper said they have expanded and are always looking for new oppressors and feedback at This article originally appeared on Detroit Free Press: Trackside buffet fuels race car drivers for Detroit Grand Prix

Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix start time; what is the IndyCar schedule on the Detroit GP track?

The IndyCar Series completes a five-week stretch of on-track action with the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix, a 100-lap race on a 9-turn, 1.645-mile downtown street layout. Push-to-pass: 150 total seconds, in increments up to 15 seconds Tire allotment: Five sets of primary tires (six for rookies) and five sets of alternate tires. Teams must use one set of primary tires and one set of new alternate tires for at least two laps in the race. Alex Palou. Not sure there's much else to say, though Kyle Kirkwood beat him that one time. Scott Dixon stayed out of the way of all the crashes and penalties on the tight downtown street course to come away with his 58th career win. From Nathan Brown, IndyStar Picking Alex Palou is so obvious that we're barring him from this portion of the preview for a while. Pato O'Ward sits second and Christian Lundgaard third in points, but they're more than two races' worth of max points behind Palou. Who makes a move in the points standings? Marcus Ericsson would have been 10th in points after crossing the finish line second in the Indianapolis 500, but he stands 20th after his car failed post-race tech inspection. He earned his lone podium finish in 2024 in Detroit, and with a similar performance this weekend, Ericsson makes up a lot of the ground he lost in the championship standings in Indy. Surprising qualifying performance: Though Rinus Veekay has had some strong qualifying performances in his first year with Dale Coyne Racing, he hasn't been consistent. But in his first race weekend with Michael Cannon as engineer, Veekay narrowly misses out on the Fast 6, but sets himself up for a strong Sunday. Something you didn't see coming: At a track where he started on pole last year, but only finished 19th, Detroit seems like as good a track as any for Colton Herta to find some momentum. He sits just 9th in the championship standings with a single top-5 finish. However, the narrow streets of Detroit can be cruel, and somehow Herta and the No. 26 crew leave with a tough result unbecoming of the traditionally dominant street course program of Andretti Global. 'Really difficult moment': Doug Boles is hopeful after Indy 500 penalties, controversies

Indianapolis Motor Speedway and IndyCar Series president Doug Boles and three drivers sent to the back of the Indianapolis 500 finishing order focused on the future at Monday night's victory banquet. Boles said the controversies over the previous week — including the penalties assessed to two Team Penske cars post-qualifying — strengthened his faith in those in the paddock. "Unfortunately, I've had to have some difficult conversations with those great teams and those great people, including last night and this morning," he said. "It's a really difficult moment for all of us. But I think it's a moment we can use to move forward." Boles said he offered Callum Ilott, Kyle Kirkwood and Marcus Ericsson the chance to skip the banquet, but they showed up. Those drivers' cars failed post-race inspection and were penalized. Ilott had finished 12th but is shown 33rd; Kirkwood, from sixth to 32nd; and Ericsson from second to 31st. Boles ended his speech on a hopeful note, noting the strong TV ratings and reserved seating sellout. "We're going to go in the right direction," he said. "If you're on board with us, you're going to have a great ride. If you're not on board with us, you better get going because we're just going up." Race earnings, total purse: How much money did Alex Palou win in the Indy 500? Ilott, who drives for Prema Racing, said he heard about his penalty midday Monday: "I was at brunch, and it was ruined, unfortunately." Ericsson and Kirkwood drive for Andretti Global. Eventual winner Alex Palou passed Ericsson with 14 laps remaining, and Kirkwood had improved 17 places from his starting spot of 23rd. "It's been an emotional 24 hours, to say the least," said Ericsson, who was gutted on Sunday. The 2022 race winner also finished second in 2023, so he knows Indy 500 close calls. "We had an incredible car. I thought I had the best race car I've ever had," Kirkwood said. "This team is built on sportsmanship and integrity, and we'll do everything right in the future."
