Spike Lee Says ‘Highest 2 Lowest' Is Potentially His Last Collaboration With Denzel Washington: 'This Is It—Five'

'The last time I was in this room, I was apologizing for the f*ck-up,' filmmaker Spike Lee joked this morning as he walked into the press conference room in Cannes. The legendary New York filmmaker was referring to 2021, when he served as the Cannes jury president and prematurely announced Titane as the Palme d'Or winner during the closing-night ceremony. While the original follows a shoe company exec who becomes a victim of extortion when his chauffeur's son is kidnapped by mistake and held for ransom, the new film, set in contemporary New York City, sees a music mogul played by Denzel Washington contend with a similar plot. From Apple and A24, the film reunites Lee and Washington for the first time since Inside Man back in 2006. The duo has worked together five times, their credits are including Mo' Better Blues, Malcolm X, and He Got Game. 'Denzel and I didn't know that our previous film, Inside Man, was 18 years ago. We were surprised because it felt like yesterday. But we didn't miss a step,' Lee said of working with Washington, who received an honorary Palme d'Or before last night's premiere screening of Highest 2 Lowest. RELATED: 'I think this is it — five,' Lee added of his collaboration with Washington. 'He's been talking about retirement, even though he's just done another deal. Five films together, they stand up.' This is Lee's sixth time in the Cannes Official Selection, and Monday's premiere marked 36 years to the day since his first appearance with Do the Right Thing. During the presser, Lee was asked about the critical response to that film back in 1989, particularly around critics who said it would cause riots. 'I've had a great experience with this festival, and the people who had their various opinions about Do The Right Thing had nothing to do with the festival. It was just the press,' Lee said. RELATED: 'They said Do the Right Thing would cause riots and Black people would lose their minds,' he added. 'They were telling people to hope to God this film didn't open in their neighborhood. It was pure blatant racism to suggest Black people couldn't make the distinction between what's on the screen. They all misread it, and none of them admitted that they f*cked up.' Highest 2 Lowest was shot across New York, with elaborate action scenes in the Bronx, set against the backdrop of Yankee Stadium. During the presser, Lee was asked about shooting in New York and how he thinks the recent drop in production in the city could be resolved. 'People are hurting, people whose lives are dependent on working in the film industry,' he said. 'The guy [Donald Trump] just said he wants to put a tariff on films made outside the United States. I don't know how that's gonna work. But I don't have the answer for that.' The filmmaker said he simply feels lucky to have been able to shoot several films in New York, adding that he often has pushed back on attempts to make him shoot his New York-based films outside the city. We were never doing that.' Slated to hit select theaters August 22 before arriving on Apple TV+ on September 5, Highest 2 Lowest is written by Alan Fox and Lee. Todd Black produced for Escape Artists, alongside Jason Michael Berman for Mandalay Pictures. Exec producers included Lee for 40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks, and Mandalay's Peter Guber, as well as Juniper Productions' Matthew Lindner, Chris Brigham, and Katia Washington. Denzel Washington and Spike Lee's days of collaboration might be numbered, director says

Acclaimed director Spike Lee has revealed that his newest movie might be his final project with longtime collaborator Denzel Washington. Directed by Lee, Highest 2 Lowest — which premiered Monday at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival — stars Washington and rapper A$AP Rocky. It follows a music mogul, who faces a life-and-death moral dilemma when he gets involved in a ransom plot. The film reunited Washington and Lee for the first time since 2006's crime-thriller Inside Man. 'Denzel and I didn't know that our previous film, Inside Man, was 18 years ago. We were surprised because it felt like yesterday. But we didn't miss a step,' the Do the Right Thing director told reporters at a press conference, per Deadline. 'I think this is it — five,' Lee added of his collaboration with Washington. 'He's been talking about retirement, even though he's just done another deal. Five films together, they stand up.' The pair have additionally worked together on the 1990 musical drama Mo' Better Blues, 1992's Malcolm X, and 1998's sports drama He Got Game. Last September, the Oscar-winning Training Day actor opened up about his plans to retire in the near future. 'For me, it's about the filmmakers. Especially at this point in my career, I am only interested in working with the best,' Washington said during his Gladiator II press tour. 'I don't know how many more films I'm going to make. It's probably not that many. I want to do things I haven't done.' The 70-year-old actor, who's currently playing the titular lead in Broadway's revival of William Shakespeare's Othello, continued: 'After that, I am playing Hannibal. After that, I've been talking to Steve McQueen about a film. 'After that, Ryan Coogler is writing a part for me in the next Black Panther. After that, I'm going to do the film Othello. After that, I'm going to do King Lear. After that, I'm going to retire.' Ahead of the Highest 2 Lowest premiere, Washington was walking the red carpet to receive a surprise Palme d'Or at a special ceremony when he got into an argument with one of the photographers. As the actor stood with co-star A$AP Rocky, the photographer appeared to touch Washington, who promptly told him to 'stop.' 'Stop, stop, never put your hands on me again,' the star appeared to say to the man, who laughed, seemingly unaffected by Washington's rising anger. The man then made more failed attempts, as he continued to grab Washington despite the actor telling him to stop again. 'Stop, stop it, stop it,' Washington continued, looking visibly distressed as he pointed his finger at the man. 'I mean it. Stop, stop it.' Washington eventually made it into the ceremony where Lee presented him with the award, saying: 'This is my brother right here. I love him, I love him. I'm glad you're here where all the people love you too.'

Spike Lee's ‘Highest 2 Lowest' Rocks Cannes With Star-Studded Premiere, Warm Reception After Surprise Honor for Denzel Washington

Spike Lee and Denzel Washington helped make Cannes mo' better Monday night with the gala premiere of Highest 2 Lowest. Washington, currently playing Othello in a 15-week run on Broadway, flew to France for the evening premiere, his first collaboration with Lee since 2006's Inside Man. It was a short visit. Washington will be back on stage in New York on Tuesday. He was joined on the Cannes red carpet by Highest 2 Lowest co-stars Ilfenesh Hadera, Wendell Pierce, Jeffrey Wright, Aubrey Joseph and rapper A$AP Rocky. The premiere also brought out A-listers not associated with the film, with Jason Momoa, Luke Wilson, Dakota Johnson, Ed Norton, Isabelle Huppert and Mathieu Kassovitz spotted on the red carpet, as well as Wes Anderson, less than 24 hours after he walked the famous Cannes steps for The Phoenician Scheme. Even the former French first lady, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, made an appearance. Additionally, Rocky's partner Rihanna attended, heavily pregnant in a blue dress. The always snazzy Lee was outfitted in a bright orange and blue stripped zoot suit (the colors of his beloved New York Knicks) with matching hat and glasses. Instead of posing for selfies, Washington went down the line of fans camped out across from the red carpet, shaking every hand he could find. Prior to the screening, Washington was surprised with an honorary Palme d'Or, a career achievement acknowledgement that had been presented only 21 previous times. After the screening, the film received warm applause, with whoops and cheers for Lee, Rocky and the rest of the cast. Not for Washington, though, who had to leave early to catch his flight back to the U.S. Thanking the crowd, Lee recalled his history with Cannes, bringing his first film, She's Gotta Have It and his masterpiece Do The Right Thing to the Croisette. 'And it is Malcolm X's 100th birthday today, so give it up for Malcolm!,' Lee concluded, before a final shout-out for his true love: 'Go Knicks!' Highest 2 Lowest is a 'reinterpretation,' per Lee's own words, of Akira Kurosawa's 1963 police procedural High and Low. Washington plays a music mogul who becomes the target of a ransom demand that forces him into a moral dilemma, forced to choose between life and death. The Apple Original feature is screening out of competition in Cannes. A24 will release Highest 2 Lowest theatrically in the U.S. on Aug. 22. The momentum for Highest 2 Lowest had been building since Sunday, when Lee and his team took over Hyde Beach by Campari for an early evening fête co-hosted by The Hollywood Reporter and Threads. THR's Cannes issue, featuring Lee on the cover in striking yellow-and-black spectacles, was omnipresent at the event, alongside Campari cocktails and a guest list that included Guillaume Thevenin, Diamant Blazi, Paola Locatelli, Mateo Sinet, SCAD Savannah Film Festival artistic director Christina Routhier, power publicist Steven Wilson, UCLA professor Teri Schwartz, indie titans John and Janet Pierson, THR India chief Anupama Chopra, producer Diana Alvarez and Netflix's Albert Tello and other boldfaced names. Spike Lee and Denzel Washington back together after 18 years in Cannes film

CANNES, France, May 20 (Reuters) - Spike Lee recalled on Tuesday how he and Denzel Washington instantly picked up where they left off when filming their latest movie "Highest 2 Lowest", almost 20 years after they last worked together. "It was an 18-year gap between "Inside Man" and this film, but we were surprised because this was like it was yesterday. So we didn't lose a step," the U.S. director told journalists at the Cannes Film Festival, where his film premiered out of competition. "Highest 2 Lowest", an adaptation of legendary Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa's "High and Low", marks the fifth time Lee and Washington have worked together. Oscar-winning Washington, who received a surprise honorary Palme d'Or award ahead of Monday's premiere, was not at the news conference as he flew back to the United States for the Broadway production of "Othello". "Highest 2 Lowest" also stars Ilfenesh Hadera and Jeffrey Wright, who is also in another Cannes film this year, "The Phoenician Scheme". Rapper A$AP Rocky, who has a role in the film too, walked the red carpet with partner Rihanna following the premiere, but did not attend Tuesday's news conference. "It's been a blessing to just have this body of work, of us doing films that people love," Lee said, although he cast doubt on whether he and Washington would reunite for a sixth time. "I think this is it, five," Lee said, adding that the 70-year-old Washington has been talking about retirement even as he continues to take on new projects. The two Hollywood giants first worked together on 1990's "Mo' Better Blues" after Lee approached Washington following his Oscar-winning performance in "Glory", and then in "Malcolm X", "He Got Game", "Inside Man" and now "Highest 2 Lowest". Lee, who filmed the crime thriller in New York City, said he was not sure how President Donald Trump's proposed 100% tariffs on foreign-made films could help to bring production back to the United States. "There's a strong film community in New York City. But I don't have the answer for your question, but people are definitely hurting." "Highest 2 Lowest", which received a standing ovation of almost six minutes, is scheduled for release in the United States on August 22.
