Music legend Phil Collins seen in rare appearance amid health battle

Music legend Phil Collins seen in rare appearance amid health battle Phil Collins was out in force to support his son Matthew as he played for Austrian football club WSG Tirol at the weekend, with the music legend making a rare appearance Singer and drummer Phil Collins has been candid about his health struggles (Image: undefined via Getty Images ) Music icon Phil Collins made a rare public appearance this weekend to support his son Matthew Collins during a crucial match with Austrian football team WSG Tirol. The father and son were spotted together in the stands, capturing a rare moment in a heartfelt photo after the game. Best known for timeless hits like In the Air Tonight, the 74-year-old musician shares Matthew and Nicholas with ex-wife Orianne Cevey, along with three other children: Joely, Lily, and Simon, 48. Phil met Orianne in the 1990s while she was working as his translator in Switzerland. The two married in 1999 but later parted ways in 2008. ‌ Despite WSG Tirol's narrow 3-2 defeat to Hartberg in the play-off on Saturday, Phil stayed to show support for his 20-year-old son and the team. ‌ Phil Collins' footballer son Matthew, 20, shares rare Instagram snap with his father as he supports him at game Interestingly, Matthew's connection to the Genesis frontman wasn't immediately known when he joined the squad. Head coach Manuel Ludwiger explained, "We Google the players we take on trial to find out about their past careers, it was only then that we found out Matthew is Phil Collins' son. We haven't signed him as a publicity stunt. It is purely down to his footballing ability.", reports the Mirror. Phil has openly discussed Matthew's deep-seated passion for football, recalling a conversation that showed his son's confidence in becoming a professional player. "Matt loves music, but loves his football even more," Phil noted. For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter Earlier this year, Phil candidly shared news about his deteriorating health that's led to a complete lack of interest in creating music. The legendary drummer and singer, who hung up his sticks in 2022 due to escalating physical difficulties stemming from a spinal injury in 2007, gave a touching update on his wellbeing, having also been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2017. ‌ Speaking to Mojo magazine, he said, "I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens. But I'm not hungry for it anymore." The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member added, "The thing is, I've been sick, I mean very sick." Recounting his long battle with spinal issues since 2009, he said, "My vertebrae have been crushing my spinal cord because of the position I drum in. It comes from years of playing. ‌ "I can't even hold the sticks properly without it being painful. I even used to tape the sticks to my hands to get through. Don't worry, I can still sing." In the poignant documentary released last year, 'Phil Collins: Drummer First', which was filmed over two years, Phil revisits his journey, placing emphasis on his drumming rather than his famous vocals. The deeply emotional film depicts the gifted artist grappling with the harsh reality that drumming, an art form once intrinsic to his life, had slipped away, and his days performing live were conclusively behind him. In the documentary, Phil addresses the impact of his health on his ability to play drums, saying: "It's still kind of sinking in a little bit. You know, I'm 71. I've spent all my life playing drums. To suddenly not be able to do that is a shock. ‌ "If I wake up one day and I can hold a pair of drumsticks, then I will have a crack at it. I just feel like I've used up my air miles," and confessed: "To be suddenly not be able to do that is a shock. If I can't do what I did as well as I did it, I'd rather relax and not do anything." Phil also expressed how his physical decline has affected him mentally: "I'm not a singer who plays the drums. I'm more of a drummer who sings a bit." Phil Collins seen with footballer son in rare appearance after health issues

Phil Collins has been spotted in a loving family photo with his 20-year-old football star son while facing ongoing health issues. The legendary Genesis songwriter and drummer, 74, retired from music some time ago after battling severe nerve damage and deteriorating mobility. He's been unable to play his drums since 2019 and called time on his music career in 2022, instead choosing to prioritise his health and time with his family. And part of that precious family time has involved the In the Air Tonight singer going to watch his footballer son Mathew in a game over the weekend. Mathew, 20, who Phil shares with ex-wife Orianne Cevey, plays for WSG Tirol II, which is the youth academy team of Austrian club WSG Tirol. In a lovely photo, Mathew posed with dad Phil in the stands of the club's stadium, with the younger Collins family member still dressed in his football kit. Dad Phil opted for a snuggly fleeced jacket and plain black trousers, and was all smiles as he proudly watched his son during WSG Tirol II's 2-1 win over league rivals Fugen. The caption read, 'Two big wins today!', with Mathew seeing Phil's presence at the game as a big victory amid his superstar dad's chronic health battle. In the comments, Charlie McDowell -husband of Phil's daughter Lily Collins and the son of actor Malcolm McDowell – said 'Love this so much,' sending love to his brother-in-law and father-in-law. Surrey-born Emily In Paris star Lily also commented, saying 'I love everything about this,' offering congratulations to Mathew on his big win. Mathew's brother Nicholas followed his father's footsteps a little more closely by becoming a drummer, eventually playing for Genesis during some live shows. However, Phil himself is a fan of Tottenham Hotspur and has been following football for some time – he has also made supportive comments about Mathew's career in the past. Several years ago, he said in a statement: 'Matt loves music, but loves his football even more. He is certain he'll turn professional.' Mathew began his youth career playing for Astoria Walldorf's under-19s team before joining Hanover 96, who currently play in the second division in Germany. He signed a contract with WSG Tirol in 2023 and was moved into their academy set-up in order to develop his potential, with a view to one day playing to the first team. Sunday's game was attended by just 200 people – one of which was Phil – and saw WSG Tirol II stay in third place in their division as the season comes to a close. WSG Tirol II currently play in the Regionalliga Tirol, which is the fourth tier of Austrian football. Mathew has scored two goals for his team during this campaign, with his most recent coming in October 2024. Speaking about Mathew's dad, WSG Tirol II's manager Manuel Ludwiger said: 'We research the players we take on trial to find out about their past careers. It was only then that we found out Matthew is Phil Collins' son.' 'We haven't signed him as a publicity stunt. It is purely down to his footballing ability.' After recovering from hearing loss during the early 2000s, Phil's career got back on track, recording two further solo albums – Testify in 2002, and Going Back in 2010 – and a 2007 Genesis live album. More Trending However, in 2009, Phil needed surgery on a neck problem that had been plaguing him for some time – sadly, he lost feeling in his fingers and could only play drums if the sticks were taped to his hands. In 2014, he revealed that an undiagnosed nerve problem had been causing the issues and underwent further operations in 2015 – sadly the procedure still didn't reverse his issues. Shows in June 2017 were cancelled after Phil slipped over in a hotel room and badly injured himself, with the cause later revealed to be his foot drop, resulting from his 2015 operation. At that point, he began to use a cane to walk and stayed seated during Genesis shows, eventually retiring from performing a few years later. Got a story? Marilyn Manson Charts Another No. 1 — And Several New Top 10s

Marilyn Manson's cover of "In the Air Tonight" debuts at No. 1 on Billboard's Hard Rock Digital Song ... More Sales chart and hits five rankings in its first week. HOLLYWOOD, CA - MAY 08: Marilyn Manson attends the premiere of Warner Bros. Pictures' "King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword" at TCL Chinese Theatre on May 8, 2017 in Hollywood, California. (Photo by) Despite serious controversies and legal issues, Marilyn Manson's fanbase has remained loyal. The rocker returns to the Billboard charts this week with brand new music, and he scores another immediate No. 1 right out of the gate with his latest tune. It seems that those who have followed his work for years are still intent on snapping up anything he delivers — especially the moment it becomes available. Manson and his band recently covered "In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins. The track has become a surprise bestseller in several nations, especially in the United States. This frame, the tune launches on five Billboard charts, most of which are dedicated to pure purchases. It opens inside the top 10 on all but one of them, and even gives Manson another ruler to his credit. "In the Air Tonight" opens at No. 1 on the Hard Rock Digital Song Sales chart. Despite his longstanding success in that genre, Manson has now collected just three No. 1s on this list, and he only began earning them fairly recently after Billboard introduced the tally, which focuses solely on the bestselling hard rock cuts throughout the U.S., just a few years ago. Manson first hit No. 1 on the Hard Rock Digital Song Sales chart in August 2020 with "We Are Chaos." He doubled his sum in August of the following year — which is becoming a special month for the musician — when "Sick of the Secrets Within" launched in first place. Both tunes held the top spot for just one frame. Throughout his career, Manson has scored a lucky 13 top 10s on the Hard Rock Digital Song Sales chart. A few of those tracks — such as his cover of "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)," as well as "Deep Six" and "Raise the Red Flag" — missed out on the summit by just one space. He has pushed a total of 16 tracks onto the tally, with only three failing to reach the uppermost region. "In the Air Tonight" just misses out on becoming a No. 1 on two other rankings at the same time. It starts at No. 2 on both the Alternative Digital Song Sales and Rock Digital Song Sales charts. It marks Manson's fifth top 10 on the alternative list and sixth on the rock-only ranking. Manson also collects his fifth top 10 on the Hot Hard Rock Songs ranking this time around. "In the Air Tonight" debuts at No. 10, just barely managing to sneak into that uppermost region on the roster, which measures the most consumed and most popular hard rock-only smashes in the nation. In its first full tracking frame of availability, Manson's cover of "In the Air Tonight" sold just under 2,200 copies, according to Luminate. That sum is just enough to bring it to the Digital Song Sales chart, where it launches at No. 22. That position now marks a new all-time high for Manson on the list of the bestselling songs in America. His previous best (and only other hit), "God's Gonna Cut You Down," spent one week at No. 37 half a decade ago. The ranking now only features 25 spots, so "God's Gonna Cut You Down" wouldn't have even reached the roster this time around.

Marilyn Manson Misses Charting His First No. 1 Hit — Again

Marilyn Manson's 'In the Air Tonight' opens at No. 2 on the Official Physical Singles chart in the ... More U.K., narrowly missing the top spot after selling out its limited run. BEVERLY HILLS, CALIFORNIA - FEBRUARY 09: Marilyn Manson attends the 2020 Vanity Fair Oscar Party hosted by Radhika Jones at Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts on February 09, 2020 in Beverly Hills, California. (Photo by) Despite serious allegations of abuse and multiple court cases, Marilyn Manson's fanbase has remained steadfast and stuck by his side for years now. The rocker has largely evaded facing consequences for multiple accusations, and is once again on the path to musical stardom. He demonstrated his continued popularity with Assassination Under God – Chapter 1, his latest album, which arrived in late 2024. That set produced a handful of successful singles in the rock space, and now the controversial musician is back with another tune. Manson recently released a cover of "In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins. His take on the pop/rock classic is predictably darker thanks to the fact that he added his own twist to the cut, and that move seems to have resonated with many of his followers. The track was issued as a CD single and made available in extremely limited quantities, as only 4,000 copies were produced. There was clearly interest in new work from the rocker, as the song sold out almost immediately. In the United Kingdom, "In the Air Tonight" appears on three rosters that track pure purchases. It opens highest on the Official Physical Singles chart, which makes sense, given Manson's focus on the CD format. The tune starts at No. 2, just missing out on opening in the top spot. Only one tune, "It's Amazing to Be Young" by Fontaines D.C., kept Manson from hitting No. 1. That cut vaults from No. 78, where it debuted the previous frame, to the top spot. Manson has never reached the summit on the Official Physical Singles chart, though he's come close before. In 2020, he peaked at No. 2 with his version of the American folk song "God's Gonna Cut You Down." Looking at his discography, Manson has landed five tracks inside the top 10 on that tally out of 17 total appearances. "In the Air Tonight" also manages to become a bestseller on two other rankings. It launches at No. 15 on the general Official Singles Sales chart and comes in at No. 37 on the Official Singles Downloads tally. That performance shows that fans of the rocker preferred to buy the track in a physical format, rather than downloading it on platforms like iTunes.

Rob Braslin: the 10 funniest things I have ever seen (on the internet)

The party sort of feels over for the internet. We all know when a house party is over, it's when everyone is cooked, the music has been turned down a little and we are all sitting around the old smart TV like our grandparents used to do and taking turns showing our favourite funny videos. The internet has been really fun, in fact it's still really good. Email is the best it's ever been! Here's to many more years of the 'net and these are 10 things that make me laugh AND think! This is from the pilot episode of a sketch series called All Good If Not by the brilliant Jack Druce. The crew behind these sketches are some of the funniest buggers in the country, and this sketch highlights their brilliance. Tall uncles do have a lot of power. I love this kind of sketch where it keeps breaking down how someone as ridiculous as Uncle Sam could come to be and then it comes full circle until it makes sense. Does that make sense? Conan is one of my all time comedy heroes. He wrote for The Simpsons and for Saturday Night Live. I consider him the best comedy writer of all time. Late Night with Conan O'Brien was the first show I remember making sure I had taped or would use all my good karma to stay up late and watch when I was 10. I love this clip, because we see Conan do a very funny bit with the guy who he considers the best comedy writer, the legendary Jim Downey, who plays this overly sincere version of himself and Conan hams it up for his podcast audience. A great ice breaker video when showing off your favourite videos to new friends. Simple, short and you can talk about In the Air Tonight, a certified banger. I guarantee, someone will bring up the factoid that this song is about the drummer from Genesis, Phil Collins, watching someone watch someone drowning. Just laugh at the silly deer and move on to the next video. Normally prank videos are trash, and my least favourite ones are people messing with someone just trying to do their job. I really liked this one though, just 'cos there is commitment to the bit; it's a great Stone Cold Steve Austin impersonation and they aren't being a complete dickhead to the person working. There's a lot to love about this: the E.T. finger waving and the minor break of character to adjust the mask. It's funny just because it's so set up to fail, the guy is being genuinely funny (well maybe it's funnier if you are a wrestling fan, I don't know) and the people doing their job at the fast food joint have little laugh, so it's not evil. Tom McGovern sings this John Cougar Mellencamp hit song. There's a masterstroke in this video that really took me by surprise. You'll see it in the brief second camera shot. I love that this guy is hanging out in his walk-in wardrobe making his dreams come true, like so many comedians. Here is a weird video I loved when I was a teenager. I showed it at a house party recently and it bombed. Not even crickets. Just a void. My blood was pumping in my ears. Then someone showed a James Corden Carpool Karaoke clip and we all laughed again. I still love this video and the close circle of friends I had in 2007 loved it. That's all that matters. Conner O'Malley has been making the best videos on the internet as of late, they are effectively becoming better than most feature films out at the moment, and I believe there are Letterboxd reviews of them, which is a key sign you have made it. The deep intellectual dark web has a new silent guardian with a megaphone and this is a great intro into Conner's sick sad world! Watch his video Rap World after this, it's feature film-length brilliance. This video shows a simple yet effective way to shut down a heckler. Jim Bakker is a TV evangelist who was arrested in the 80s for stealing money from the church he led. These days he hosts a show where he sells doomsday prepping foods, like big gross tubs of sloppy foods. He had this bloke called Kevin come and sing a song about the products. I'm not about the doomsday prepping life, but this song has me thinking we are doomed. Check out Vic Berger's edits of Jim Bakker. Pete Weber is the bad boy of tenpin bowling. In this clip he wins a bowling tournament and is thrilled about it and screams some words and it sounds demonic. It's more than that really – you dig deeper and see how high the stakes were. There's an interview with Pete where he explains exactly why he said 'Who do you think you are?I am!' and it's perfect. He isn't as scary as he seems. Rob Braslin is hosting a special edition of CULT Comedy as part of the Hobart Festival of Comedy on Wednesday 5 March 2025. CULT Comedy runs the first Thursday of every month at Altar Bar, Hobart. Rob also hosts the web series Go Figure
