Off the Grid: Sally breaks down USA TODAY's daily crossword, Turtles All the Way Down

There are spoilers ahead. You might want to solve today's puzzle before reading further! Turtles All the Way Down Constructor: Orca Jimmy Peniston Editor: Jared Goudsmit LEEKS (38A: Veggies worn on Saint David's Day) Saint David's Day is the feast day of Saint David, the patron saint of Wales. It is observed on March 1, which is the date of Saint David's death in 589 BCE. Traditional Saint David's Day activities include wearing daffodils and LEEKS, two national symbols of Wales. ACTS (9A: "Into the Woods" has two) Into the Woods is a 1987 musical by Stephen Sondheim that intertwines the plots of several fairy tales. As the clue informs us, it has two ACTS. KNEE (15A: Joint bent in a Nordic hamstring curl) The Nordic hamstring curl is an exercise in which a person starts in a kneeling position (i.e. with KNEEs bent) and then slowly lowers their body forward by extending the KNEE. SHIP (16A: Captain Hook's vessel) We're talking about the fictional Captain Hook here, the antagonist in J. M. Barrie's 1904 play Peter Pan. Captain Hook's vessel was the pirate SHIP the Jolly Roger. TEAMMATE (20A: Bronny, to LeBron James, e.g.) An astute solver might have guessed the answer here was "son" – until seeing the letter count of the answer. LeBron "Bronny" James is the son of LeBron James. Both LeBron and Bronny James currently play basketball for NBA's Los Angeles Lakers, making them TEAMMATEs. EGYPT (33A: Country where Sham el-Nessim is celebrated) Sham el-Nessim is a national holiday in EGYPT that marks the beginning of spring. The holiday's name translates to "smelling the breeze" in English, and appropriately, it's celebrated outside with picnics, music, and games. Sham El-Nessim is celebrated on the Monday after Coptic Easter (which occurs later than the Easter holiday in Western Christianity). SAX (44A: John Coltrane's instrument) John Coltrane (1926-1967) was a SAX player, bandleader, and composer. In 2007, John Coltrane was posthumously awarded a special Pulitzer Prize for his "masterful improvisation, supreme musicianship, and iconic centrality to the history of jazz." BERT (45A: Muppet with a pet pigeon) and ERNIE (62A: Muppet with a rubber duck) and ELMO (54D: Muppet with a pet named Dorothy) This is a lovely little Muppet sub-theme. I like the choice to write all three clues in the "Muppet with a..." format. By the way, BERT's pet pigeon is named Bernice, ERNIE's rubber duck is named Rubber Duckie, and ELMO's pet named Dorothy is a goldfish. CLICK BAIT (58A: "This One Weird Trick..." headline, e.g.) Resist the CLICK BAIT, no matter how interesting or intriguing it seems. REES (67A: "Mudbound" director Dee) Mudbound is a 2017 movie directed by Dee REES. It is based on Hillary Jordan's 2008 novel of the same name. The movie is a historical drama telling the story of two World War II veterans – one white, one Black – who return home to Mississippi after the war. UNDER THE SEA (6D: "The Little Mermaid" song that features steel drums) "UNDER THE SEA" is a calypso-style song sung by the crab Sebastian (voiced by Samuel E. Wright) in Disney's animated 1989 movie The Little Mermaid. The song is Sebastian's attempt to dissuade Ariel (the titular mermaid) from her plan to go after Prince Eric. I can hear those steel drums now... "UNDER THE SEA / UNDER THE SEA / Darling it's better / Down where it's wetter / Take it from me..." FRUIT NINJA (30D: Mobile game that involves slicing apples, mangoes, coconuts, etc.) FRUIT NINJA is a game in which a player uses their finger to slice fruit that appears on the screen. It's been quite some time since I've played FRUIT NINJA (but amazingly I have played it), but I recognized the description here immediately. TACOS (47D: Foods "al pastor") TACOS al pastor is made with pork that has been marinated with pineapple, dried chilies, and spices and then skewered on a spit and grilled. ONION (Cajun holy trinity veggie) In Cajun cuisine, which originated in Louisiana and was developed by CAJUNs (an ethnic group who are descendants of Acadian exiles), the "holy trinity" of aromatic vegetables – green pepper, ONION, and celery – is used in many recipes. BAR (59A: Mixologist's workplace) A mixologist, aka a bartender, mixes and serves alcoholic beverages at a BAR. PENALTY BOX (3D: Place for a punished hockey player) UNDER THE SEA (6D: "The Little Mermaid" song that features steel drums) FRUIT NINJA (30D: Mobile game that involves slicing apples, mangoes, coconuts, etc.) TURTLES ALL THE WAY DOWN: The last word of each vertical (DOWN) theme answer is a type of TURTLE: BOX TURTLE, SEA TURTLE, and NINJA TURTLE. TURTLES ALL THE WAY DOWN is an expression alluding to a mythical TURTLE that holds the Earth on its back, and suggests that this TURTLE rests on the back of another TURTLE, which rests on another TURTLE, etc. TURTLES ALL THE WAY DOWN is also the title of a young adult novel by John Green and the 2024 film adaptation of the novel. Today TURTLES ALL THE WAY DOWN is an appropriate title for this puzzle in which types of TURTLES are found DOWN in the theme answers. Thank you, Orca Jimmy, for this interesting puzzle. Article content 'It's a cast of 11, it's an orchestra of seven,' says Martin. 'We had maybe a six-piece band with Rocky Horror, but now we have strings as well on this show, and we're actually using the orchestra pit. It's definitely the biggest show we've taken on. It kind of comes with the territory of having a 350-seat theatre, you know?' Article content For Martin, who started Grindstone Theatre back in 2011, this has been quite the trip. The Grindstone has grown significantly as an organization, from a shoestring operation to full-time staff and the operation of three venues and a theatre school. Martin has gone from focusing almost exclusively on the long-running The 11 O'clock Number: The Improvised Musical to a main stage season in multiple venues. Article content 'I think back to when I was in grade six and I saw my first Citadel show, Into the Woods,' he muses. 'I learned later, once I was in theatre school, that Ron was in that show, that he was playing the character of Jack. So, I'm still kind of a younger director and I'm working with all of these people that I used to sit in the audience and watch, and it's very much a cool experience.' Susan Estelle Kelso, PhD

April 23, 1941- April 23, 2025 Two serious surgeries in 1959 and 1960, gave Susan an early understanding of pain and shaped her conscious living. The years were diverse and not what she imagined or planned for when she graduated Alamo Heights High School in San Antonio in 1959. The continuity was 64 years with her daughter, Bonnie Cullum, 42 years with husband Peter Dart, and more than a half century of philosophical inquiry and learning. Susan was a pregnant freshman at San Antonio College and sang at The Landing on the Riverwalk. She graduated from Trinity University and earned a PhD from the University of Kansas. Her 'flower child' days were for civil rights, peace, feminism, zero population growth, and tree hugging! For six years, she directed and facilitated Volunteers in Court for Juvenile Court, Douglas County, Kansas. Susan taught most of her life, performed on stage and designed costumes and props for Kansas Repertory Company, and acted in many industrial and educational films. At McNeese State University, she taught theatre, women's studies, and communication, directed plays, designed costumes and makeup, and served as full professor and department head. She adjudicated plays at regional festivals for college and community theatres. Susan and Peter rode out Hurricane Rita and ten days of self sufficiency. They sailed the intercoastal waterway from Lake Charles to South Padre in a small boat and had a reefed sail ripped off by a Corpus Christi Bay water spout. Other notable memories: train rides on the Orient Express and through Scandinavia; hot air balloon over the Napa vineyard; helicopters over Kauai, the Big Island, and New Zealand glaciers; scuba dives in the Bahamas; a car trip through Israel; a visit to Loch Ness (no monster) and to Kelso, Scotland; experiencing the magic and mystery of Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley. Theatre is interconnected with her loved ones. Peter and Susan began their fascination with each other onstage. They team-taught Acting for Camera at McNeese; he created props for shows she directed; they appeared onstage together in productions like The Four Poster, Little Mary Sunshine, and Into the Woods. Bonnie and Susan appeared onstage together at the University of Kansas. Bonnie directed her in A Dream Play and Beckett's Rockaby and directed and produced her scripts at The VORTEX. For many friends, students, and colleagues, Susan was a crone, a wise woman–quite different from her glamorous high school image or her first semester of graduate school when her Kansas professor advised her 'to go back to San Antonio where you belong and be a housewife.' She was a yogini and Eastern philosopher. She celebrated Earth Day and nature meditations. Yoga kept her mind, spirit, and body flexible. She loved her Louisiana River Haven acre and Horseshoe Bay hilltop where she lived with her dogs and Peter, her marvelous caregiver, lover, and acre manager. She cultivated wildlife habitats with many creatures–winged, legged, and slitherers. The past two years, she lived in Austin to be close to Bonnie and Chad. She died at home at dawn on her 84th birthday with her belovéd dogs, Zorro and Lil' Bear, and her Kat by her side. Susan is survived by children Bonnie Cullum (Chad Salvata); David Dart (Sarah Woods), Stephanie Dart, Stephen Dart. Grandchildren Michael Dart, Jessica Russell (Daniel), Livia Gotsman (Evan Questad), and Levi Gotsman (Tatiana Cantu). Siblings Winchechester Kelso (Glynn), Kelly Van Nostrand (Dominique), and Scott Marshall, and many cherished first cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Peter Dart; parents, Ruby Youngblood Marshall (Dan Marshall) and Col. Winchester Kelso III (Col. Mary Kelso); and brother, Kent Marshall. She was an avid supporter of the arts. Gifts in her honor may be made to her favorite (Bonnie's) non-profit theatre, The VORTEX in Austin. There will be a memorial for Susan Kelso on Saturday, May 24, 2025 at 3 p.m. (Butterfly Bar opens at 2 p.m.) at The VORTEX, 2307 Manor Rd. Austin, TX 78722.

Alicia Vikander will make her theatre debut in London opposite Andrew Lincoln in ‘The Lady from the Sea'

The Bridge Theatre has had a big juicy hole in its programming for some months now, smack bang between the imminent return of Nicholas Hytner's ecstatic immersive A Midsummer Night's Dream and Jordan Fein's revival of Sondheim's immortal Into the Woods. We'd hoped a starry play with an interesting director might plug the gap, and lo! It has come to pass. In a busy year for Ibsen adaptations – following the Lyric Hammersmith's Ghosts, the Ewan McGregor-starring My Master Builder and a Lily Allen-led spin on Hedda Gabler over in Bath – auteur Aussie director Simon Stone will put his own spin on The Lady from the Sea. And he's got some heavyweight leads in the shape of Andrew Lincoln and – in her stage debut – Academy Award-winning Swedish actor Alicia Vikander. Ibsen's 1889 drama concerns Ellida, a woman who has settled for a comfortable life that is shaken to the core when an old lover re-emerges. As with all Simon Stone's works – most famously his Billie Piper-starring West End hit Yerma – the play is a modern interpretation that he himself has adapted and directed, so it's hard to say precisely what details of the original will be retained, but he should do something pretty enthralling with it. Vikander is a prolific screen actor best known for playing Lara Croft in the 2018 version of Tomb Raider and for her Oscar-winning supporting turn in 2015's The Danish Girl. Lincoln was a regular on UK stages before finding major US success with The Walking Dead. Technically his last London stage role was playing Scrooge at the Old Vic's A Christmas Carol in 2020, though the show was performed in front of webcams in an empty theatre due to the pandemic. Vikander will play Ellida, and Lincoln her husband Edvard (whether the family name remains Wangel is TBC). There's a third major role of Ellida's dangerous ex-lover – in Ibsen simply called The Stranger – that is still to be cast, but all will presumably be revealed soon-ish. The show goes on general sale May 13, and you'll be able to .
