Ireland's regional airports to get nearly €8 million for capital projects

Three of Ireland's regional airports are set to share nearly €8 million in government funding for capital development projects. The funding will support 33 capital investment projects intended to improve the safety and security at Kerry, Ireland West and Donegal airports, as well as sustainability efforts at a cost of €7.823m. Ireland West Airport in Knock , Co Mayo will be given €5.66 million in funding to support projects including a security systems upgrade, the development of a solar farm and an upgrade of the airport's electrical infrastructure. The funding will also support the transition of the airport's carbon accreditation rating. More than €1.8 million in funding will be allocated to Kerry Airport for snow clearing equipment, a new security perimeter access road and support for the repair to the airport's localiser – a runway antenna array that aids pilots during approach. READ MORE Donegal Airport will receive nearly €350,000 to fund capital projects including a remote-controlled gas cannon for wildlife management, explosive trace detection equipment and to support the relocation of the runway approach path indicators. Minister for Transport Darragh O'Brien said the 'level of targeted support is an indication of the importance Government attaches to our regional airports, which facilitate connectivity'. Mr O'Brien highlighted the installation the solar farm at Ireland West airport and the expansion of Donegal's farm. Last year, overall passenger traffic across Irish regional airports was 7 per cent higher than in 2023, with a further 6 per cent growth in passenger traffic in those airports in the first quarter, which he said was supported by Exchequer funding from the department. The funding came under the existing regional airports programme, which is due to end in December. Mr O'Brien said a new programme, for the period 2026 to 2030 is being prepared 'as a matter of priority'.

Ireland West Airport receives €5.6 million Department of Transport funding

The funding was approved to support eleven projects eligible for support under the Public Policy Remit – Capital (PPR- C) and CAPEX funding schemes under the Regional Airports Programme 2021-2025. This will fund various capital projects at the airport, including construction of a new aerodrome fire training centre, security systems upgrades, air traffic control charts, electrical infrastructure upgrades, a solar PV farm, an electrical hi loader, an electrical ambulift, an air traffic control engineering vehicle replacement, aeronautical ground lighting (agls) and airport carbon accreditation level 4 transition. The airport will invest over €1.1 million to support the completion of these projects in addition to the exchequer funding. Ireland West is expecting another record year for passenger numbers, which have grown 11 percent on the first four months of 2024. Last year, the airport welcomed 834,000 passengers, marking its busiest year since its official opening on May 30, 1986. Arthur French, Chairman of Ireland West Airport, welcomed the funding announcement, thanking Ministers Darragh O'Brien, Dara Calleary and Alan Dillon for their support. Mr French said the funding would help the airport 'maintain compliance with relevant EU safety and security regulatory requirements and also in supporting six key projects with a fundamental sustainability focus'. 'We thank the Minister and Government again for this strong show of support for the airport and look forward to the finalising of the new Regional Airports Programme later this year to cover the period 2026 to 2030 which will be a vitally important programme to support the airport's future growth and investment plans,' he added.

Roscommon's last remaining travel agent closing shop after 30 years of making travel wishes come true

Gannon Travel has been a constant in Castlerea for over 30 years helping customers find their dream family holidays, honeymoons and cruises. The shop is the last walk in travel agent in operation in County Roscommon. However, Francis and Miriam Gannon have announced their plan to retire in December 2025. The couple announced the closure in advance to allow for an orderly wind up of the operation and to facilitate customers with existing bookings and vouchers, while they will continue take bookings for travel up to October 31, 2025. Miriam and Francis, who are both from Castlerea, have operated the business for the last 31 years under Gannon Travel, servicing the people of Castlerea and beyond. Francis purchased the business in 1994. At that time, it was an existing travel agency under the ownership of the Delaney Family who operated it since the early 1900's. Since taking over the business, the couple have been at the heart of special moments for many local families. The pair explained, 'Over the last 30 years, we have had the pleasure in meeting wonderful people and who come back year after year to support our business by booking their trips with us. 'We are always mindful in giving the best service and attention and always put ourselves in the client's place and treat them as to how I would like to be treated. 'We would have had the honeymoon booking to the family holiday, to the children emigrating abroad to the parents now travelling to places like Australia, New Zealand or Canada to meet their new grandchildren – Full circle of life,' said Miriam. ADVERTISEMENT Since starting out, the couple have seen many changes to the travel industry during their time in business. The couple said the changes in the last 30 years have been tremendous – especially the use of technology while travelling. The shop has seen hand written airline tickets changing to E-Tickets to airline tickets being on a smart phone. Another notable change is the improvement in the affordability of travel due to low cost airlines, while the pair remembers a time when there were no baggage restrictions. 'Where there are now baggage charges, in the past people would bring everything from the vanity case to the two checked in bags per person on a week's holiday. 'It is all about bag size and dimensions now,' they said. During the boom, the travel agents were on hand to help construction workers who had come to Ireland to work return home to see their families. 'There would have been a line of Polish builders coming in twice a year to book their flights home to visit family. 'There would be one of the group that would be able to converse in English and we learnt how to pronounce the different Polish cities.' The holiday options from regional airports across Ireland has increased massively from when the couple first began their career in the travel agent. 'The increase in destination options from the regional airports has been tremendous. 'Ireland West Airport is located 30 minutes from Castlerea while Shannon Airport is two hours. 'Clients will plum for these airports first and go with the destinations that these airports offer,' said Miriam. From their experience, the popularity of cruises has grown over the years with people being more adventurous with their holidays. 'We would say the big destination that has increased dramatically over the last number of years is the cruising holiday. 'For a week away cruising – you are generally getting five different destinations to see on the port stops. 'People are also getting more adventurous in their travel requests. 'From escorted tours to South America, to Tanzanian Safaris, to experience the wonders of Asia. 'The world has opened up especially with the likes of Emirates, Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways now operating daily flights out of Dublin and whereby a lot of the world is available with a one stop flight,' said Miriam. The couple never opted to set up an online aspect to their business, opting instead for offering excellent customer service and knowledge of the industry. 'We do not have an online website. 'Since Covid – our business sales have increased. 'I would put this down to the public realising how much the travel agent gives with both knowledge and support. 'As Sunway Holidays says 'We are there for you before, during and after'.' Looking to the future, the couple said they will miss working in the industry, learning of the new destinations and helping people fulfil their travel dream. However, they are extremely grateful for the loyal customers of the business over the past 30 years. 'We would like to take this opportunity in thanking all our customers and suppliers who have supported us down through the years. 'No immediate plans but after 38 years working in the service industry, we will probably head over to Ireland West Airport and hop on a plane to the sunshine. 'Slainte, Hasta Luego, Au Revoir, Ciao.' Bookings with existing customers will continue without interruption and the couple will continue to take bookings for travel up to October 31, 2025. All outstanding travel vouchers will be honoured up to October 31, 2025 with the option to book with Gannon Travel for travel up to October 31, 2025 or receive a refund on the value of the voucher.
