Longhorns QB Arch Manning asks new Texas basketball coach Sean Miller for a favor
Sean Miller has been the head basketball coach at the University of Texas for a couple of a months now. He's still getting to know everyone on campus ... including Arch Manning. Manning ran into the new coach and ask for a perk.
In a recent podcast interview with Jeff Goodman, Miller said after the usual pleasantries, Manning asked for some 'special treatment.' The new Longhorns starter wants to play pick-up basketball games on the Longhorns practice court.
"I was walking across the street last week and somebody yelled my name: 'Coach Miller! Coach Miller!' I turned around, and it was Arch Manning," Miller told Jeff Goodman on The Field of 68. "He's a huge basketball fan. We came together, and he said, 'Welcome to Texas. I'm a big basketball fan.' He was with a couple of his friends. He said, 'Hey, do you mind if we sneak in and play pickup once in a while?' That was his question for me, and I said, 'Anytime, anytime. Whatever you do, don't get hurt.' I'm really excited about watching SEC football live at Texas. There's a lot of excitement here at Texas for the next six months."
A two-sports athlete in high school, Manning played three years of varsity basketball at Isidore Newman in New Orleans. He also was a four-year starting quarterback for the football team. On the court, the 6-foot-4 forward averaged 2.7 points and 2.8 rebounds in 25 games off the bench as a junior in 2021-22, his final season of high school ball.
Isidore Newman won Division III boys basketball state championship at the end of Manning's junior season, beating Lafayette Christian 56-47. In the state final, Manning came off the bench and scored zero points, had one turnover and one foul.
Newman didn't win the football Louisiana state title while Manning as the QB.
Manning was seen at several Texas Longhorns basketball games last year with teammate/friend Michael Taaffe. And while Manning has basketball in his background, it's a good bet new football teammate Jonah Williams will be the only two-sport star at Texas this year.
