When will the official Islamic New Year date be announced in Dubai?

Another public holiday is fast approaching in the UAE, and, unsurprisingly, we're already looking forward to that well-earned time off. Fresh off the back of a four-day long weekend for Eid Al Adha, the Islamic New Year will give us another day off in June. Unlike last year, the Islamic New Year is guaranteed to fall during the regular working week, so we have an extra day off to look forward to. Dubai residents will officially get the day off to celebrate the start of the beginning of the year AH 1447 in the Islamic Hijri calendar. Current predictions indicate that the celebration will fall on Thursday June 26, but there is a chance it could fall on Friday June 27, if Dhu Al Hijjah is a 30-day month. We won't know for certain until the evening of Wednesday June 25. Ahead of public holidays tied to Islamic Hijri dates, the UAE moon-sighting committee will meet to sight the crescent of Muharram – the first month in the Islamic calendar. The Islamic calendar relies on the cycles of the moon, as opposed to the more widely used Gregorian calendar, which is based on the sun. You might like: When is the next UAE public holiday? Your guide to every day off in 2025 Months in the Hijri calendar are all either 29 days long or 30 days long. The exact duration of each month isn't known until the 29th day and depends on whether or not the crescent moon can be seen. So when exactly is the Islamic New Year 2026? Muharram is the first month in the Islamic calendar and comes directly after the current month of Dhu Al Hijjah. Dhu Al Hijjah began on Wednesday May 28, and once we find out when the month of the pilgrimage ends, we'll then be able to confirm the beginning of the Islamic New Year holiday. The latest astronomical predictions indicate that Dhu Al Hijjah will be a 29-day month and Thursday June 26 will be the first day of Muharram and mark the Islamic New Year holiday. But if Dhu Al Hijjah is a 30-day month, then that would mean that Thursday June 26 would instead be the final day of the final month. In this instance, Friday June 27 would mark the Islamic New Year holiday and we'd get a three-day long weekend when combined with Saturday and Sunday. When will the official Eid Al Adha dates will be announced in Dubai?

Another public holiday is fast approaching in the UAE, and unsurprisingly, we're already looking forward to some well-deserved, government-mandated time off. The next UAE public holiday is rapidly approaching, and we're already counting down the days. Arafat Day and Eid Al Adha will officially give us four days off in June, but when exactly the break begins won't be revealed until at least Tuesday May 27. Public holidays like Eid Al Adha move around the calendar every year as dates are tied to the Islamic Hijri calendar. The Islamic calendar relies on the cycles of the moon, as opposed to the more widely used Gregorian calendar, which is based on the sun. Months in the Hijri calendar are all either 29 days long or 30 days long. The exact duration of each month isn't known until the 29th day and depends on whether or not the crescent moon can be seen. This particular Eid break begins on Dhu Al Hijjah 9 with Arafat Day before rolling into Dhu Al Hijjah 10, 11 and 12 for Eid Al Adha. So when exactly is Eid Al Adha 2025? Once we know when Dhu Al Hijjah begins, we'll know when we'll be off for Eid Al Adha (Credit: Canva) Dhu Al Hijjah is the 12th and final month in the Islamic calendar and comes directly after the current month of Dhu Al Qa'dah. Dhu Al Qa'dah began on Tuesday April 29, and once we find out when the month of truce ends, we'll then be able to confirm the beginning of the Eid Al Adha holiday. The latest astronomical predictions indicate that Wednesday May 28 will be the first day of Dhu Al Hijjah. If Dhu Al Qa'dah is a 29-day month, then the final day of the month will be Tuesday May 27. This would then mean that the Dhu Al Hijjah 9 and the Eid Al Adha break would begin on Thursday June 5, giving us a four-day long weekend with Sunday June 8 being the final day of the holiday. This would then mean that Dhu Al Hijjah 9 and the Eid Al Adha break would begin on Friday June 6, giving us a four-day long weekend with Monday June 9 being the final day of the holiday. Eid Al Adha start date confirmed 2025: The days off announced

The UAE moon sighting committee has officially confirmed the Eid Al Adha start date for 2025. It has now been confirmed that the Eid Al Adha 2025 long weekend will officially begin on Thursday June 5 with Arafat Day. Dubai residents will enjoy a four-day holiday with Friday June 7, Saturday June 8 and Sunday June 9 making up the Eid Al Adha festivities. The UAE moon sighting committee saw the crescent of Dhu Al Hijjah on the evening of Tuesday May 27, which meant that it was the final day of Dhu Al-Qa'dah – the 11th month of the Islamic Hijri calendar. You might also like: Why Eid Al Adha isn't celebrated on the same day in every country Dhu Al Hijjah is the final month of the year in the Hijri calendar. Arafat Day falls on Dhu Al Hijjah 9 and Eid Al Adha on Dhu Al Hijjah 10, 11 and 12. The Islamic Hijri calendar relies on the cycles of the moon, unlike the Gregorian calendar, which is based on the sun. Months in the Islamic calendar are either 29 or 30 days long, with the exact length only determined on the month's final day. UAE public holidays law states that Eid Al Adha is a three-day holiday, preceded by a day off to mark Arafat Day. Eid Al Adha start date confirmed Friday 6th June first day of Eid Al Adha in UAE: Presidential Court#WamNews — WAM English (@WAMNEWS_ENG) May 27, 2025 What is Eid Al Adha? Eid Al Adha is the second of the two main festivals of Islam, after Eid Al Fitr, and falls in the twelfth and final month of the Islamic calendar. The annual occasion, known as the feast of sacrifice, marks the end of the Hajj season for Muslims across the world. Why Eid Al Adha weekend dates don't move As part of the standard weekend schedule, Saturday and Sunday are days off for the majority of people living and working in Dubai. The UAE public holiday law was updated at the start of this year to allow holiday dates tied to the Islamic Hijri calendar to shift from the weekend if they happen to fall on the weekend. However, the law specifically outlines that days off tied to Eid Al Fitr and Eid Al Adha cannot be moved. So, although the Eid Al Adha break will fall across the weekend, the public holiday can't be moved forward or backwards to fall exclusively during the week day. What changes in Dubai during Eid Al Adha? In addition to the four-day long weekend, it is likely that public transport timings and parking will change in the city. Unlike the Eid Al Fitr break, Dubai has more than a week to announce changes to the private and public sector working schedule, in addition to city service changes. Eid Al Adha falls on a weekend this year: Here's why the holiday won't shift

Eid Al Adha is fast approaching, and we're already counting down the days to the extended public holiday. The UAE government has already confirmed that we will have four days off to mark Arafat Day and Eid Al Adha in Dubai. The four-day break will begin on Dhu Al Hijjah 9 with Arafat Day before rolling into Dhu Al Hijjah 10, 11 and 12. When is Eid Al Adha 2025? Current predictions show that the holiday dates will begin with Arafat Day on Thursday June 5 followed by Eid Al Adha celebrations on Friday June 6, Saturday June 7 and Sunday June 8. The dates will be officially confirmed after official moon sightings closer to the time. The current estimate comes from predictions made by the Emirates Astronomical Society. You might also like: When is the next public holiday in Dubai 2025? Why Eid Al Adha won't move from the weekend As part of the standard weekend schedule, Saturday and Sunday are a day off for the majority of people living and working in Dubai. So, although the Eid Al Adha break is predicted to fall across the weekend, the public holiday won't be moved forward or backwards to fall exclusively during the week day. The official wording of the law states: 'With the exception of Eid holidays, the Cabinet may – pursuant to a resolution it issues – transfer any of the public holidays referred to in Article (1) of this Resolution to the beginning or end of the week.' Article (1) in this instance refers to all the public holiday dates we've outlined here with their predicted corresponding Gregorian calendar days. While we won't get extra days off for Eid Al Fitr or Eid Al Adha if any day related to these holidays coincides with a weekend this year, we could enjoy an extra day off if Islamic New Year, the Prophet Muhammad's birthday (PBUH) or National Day land on a weekend in the future. The national resolution also stated that each emirate is free to add any other public holidays or any occasion that it wishes to celebrate. So, if Dubai ever feels like adding an extra holiday to the calendar, then the emirate is able to do so. When will Eid Al Adha begin in Dubai? Expected date announced

Eid Al Adha is one of the most significant holidays of the year in Dubai, and astronomers have made a major prediction about when it's expected to begin in 2025. The latest update gives us a strong indication of when the next long weekend will get underway. According to the UAE public holiday law, Eid Al Adha is an official four-day break when combined with Arafat Day. You might also like: Eid Al Adha dates explained for 2025 The holiday is one of several in the UAE with no set date, as it relies on the Islamic Hijri calendar to be determined. In the Islamic Hijri calendar, months can only begin and end when the crescent moon has been sighted. Ibrahim Al-Jarwan, chairman of the Emirates Astronomy Society, has revealed when we can expect this year's holiday to begin. The start date of Eid Al Adha depends on when the crescent for the Islamic month of Dhu Al Hijjah is spotted. The Emirates Astronomy Society's latest prediction indicates that the Dhu Al Hijjah crescent should be spotted on Tuesday May 27, which would make Wednesday May 28 the first day of Dhu Al Hijjah. Unlike the Eid Al Fitr break, which comes at the beginning of the Islamic month of Shawwal, Arafat Day and Eid Al Adha are held on Dhu Al Hijjah 9, 10, 11 and 12. This would mean that the public holiday will begin on Thursday June 5 with Arafat Day and that the first day of Eid Al Adha will be on Friday June 6. The holiday would then continue onto Saturday June 7 and Sunday June 8. Current predictions point towards a four-day weekend. However, this is just a prediction at this stage and could change depending on a number of factors – including whether Shawwal and Dhu Al Qa'dah are 29-day or 30-day months in the lead up to Dhu Al Hijjah. Official confirmation of the start of Eid Al Adha is not expected until Tuesday May 27. Still got some annual leave to take this year?
