Jordan inaugurates pavilion at BUILDEX construction expo in Damascus

AMMAN — President of the Jordan Chamber of Industry (JCI) Fathi Jaghbir on Wednesday inaugurated the Jordanian pavilion at the 22nd International Construction Exhibition "BUILDEX" in Damascus. The pavilion features 30 Jordanian industrial companies, participating with support from the Amman Chamber of Industry (ACI). The companies represent "key" sectors involved in reconstruction efforts, including infrastructure, building materials, energy and engineering industries, areas where Jordan is recognised for its competitive capabilities, Jaghbir said. He stressed the importance of boosting economic ties between Jordan and Syria, citing shared interests, historical connections and the presence of a significant number of Syrian investors in the Kingdom, Al-Mamlaka TV reported. The five-day exhibition is being held at the new Damascus Exhibition City, under the patronage of the Syrian ministries of economy, industry, public works and housing. This year's edition features the participation of 490 Syrian companies and 250 international and Arab firms, covering sectors such as construction materials, interior finishing, alternative energy, water technologies, furniture, real estate development, engineering consultancies, logistics, banking and safety systems, according to Al Mamlaka News Channel. The JCI president had previously said that the Jordanian exports to Syria exceeded JD13 million in the first two months of 2025, marking a 40 per cent increase compared with the same period last year, expressing optimism that trade levels could return to their 2011 peak of over JD181 million. Syria on Monday invited Jordanian companies to participate in reconstruction efforts. The invitation came during a meeting in Damascus between Syrian Minister of Public Works and Housing Mustafa Abdulrazzaq and members of a visiting Jordanian economic delegation. During the Monday meeting, Abdulrazzaq urged Jordanian firms specialising in contracting, construction and engineering consultancy to take part in efforts to rebuild war-damaged areas across Syria. President of the Jordan Chamber of Commerce (JCC) Khalil Hajj Tawfiq, who led the Jordanian delegation, said that the visit aimed to revive commercial and investment ties. Hajj Tawfiq expressed the private sector's readiness to forge 'strategic' partnerships to support Syria's recovery. He cited Jordan's 'strong' construction and engineering sectors, and pledged to provide a list of Jordanian companies specialised in renewable energy and street lighting. The JCC president proposed a "dedicated" business forum to showcase Jordanian capabilities in construction and housing. President of the Jordanian Contractors Association Fouad Duweiri expressed the readiness of Jordan's contracting sector to deliver services, including construction, consulting and mechanical training aligned with modern building standards. He welcomed collaboration with Syria's private sector in infrastructure and housing projects. © Copyright The Jordan Times. All rights reserved. Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. (

Jordan, Damascus industry chambers agree to form joint business council

AMMAN — President of the Jordan Chamber of Industry (JCI) Fathi Jaghbir and Chairman of the Damascus Chamber of Industry Muhammad Al Mawlawi have agreed to establish a joint business council and joint sectorial committees between the two chambers in the textile, chemical, engineering and food sectors. During an official visit to Damascus, Jaghbir stressed that the committees aim to boost trade exchange between the two countries in these sectors and address any obstacles based on a 'win-win' approach, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported, citing a JCI statement on Sunday. As part of efforts to boost bilateral economic relations, he said that 25 Jordanian industrial companies are scheduled to take part in the International Building Exhibition to be held in Damascus from May 27 to 31. The participation is organised by the Amman Chamber of Industry and includes a delegation of more than 250 industrialists, the largest Jordanian delegation to visit Syria in decades, the JCI president pointed out. Jaghbir noted that the participating Jordanian companies represent vital sectors related to reconstruction, including infrastructure, building materials, energy, and engineering industries, where Jordan holds a 'strong competitive edge,' stressing the importance of this participation in opening new opportunities for Jordanian products in the Syrian market. He also highlighted the need to boost economic ties between Jordan and Syria, pointing to the 'historical ties and shared interests' that provide a favourable environment for expanded economic cooperation. The industrialist added that easing restrictions on the movement of goods and financial transfers would facilitate the flow of commodities and services and enhance the investment climate. © Copyright The Jordan Times. Jordanian apparel industry drives economic growth, green shift

Ehab Qadri, representative of the sector at JCI says that the apparel sector's export value exceeded $2.5 billion in 2024, accounting for 26 per cent of Jordan's total industrial exports (Petra photo) AMMAN — The Jordan Chamber of Industry (JCI) has highlighted the leather and garments industries sector as one of the national industries leading in export and production, attributing its success to 'supportive' political will and continuous economic reforms. Ehab Qadri, representative of the sector at JCI, said the sector has become one of the main pillars of Jordanian industry. It now ranks first among export-oriented manufacturing industries, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported on Sunday. Qadri added that the sector's export value exceeded $2.5 billion in 2024, accounting for 26 per cent of Jordan's total industrial exports. Total production amounted to more than $3.2 billion. He noted that Jordan has become a strategic industrial base for exporting products to global markets, particularly the United States, benefiting from the free trade agreements signed by the Kingdom. Qadri emphasised that the sector is among the primary drivers of the Economic Modernisation Vision (EMV), launched by His Majesty King Abdullah in 2022. The EMV aims to increase the industry's contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and create hundreds of thousands of quality jobs by 2033. He said companies in the sector are now working to shift towards higher value-added industries by promoting design, innovation, and the development of national brands. The sector is also moving towards sustainable production that considers environmental and social dimensions. As part of its partnerships, Qadri referred to the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the International Finance Corporation (IFC). The agreement aims to enhance productivity and adopt advanced manufacturing technologies. Qadri explained that the partnership includes initiatives to build institutional capacity, develop value chains, and promote compliance with international standards. These efforts will strengthen Jordan's position as a regional hub for advanced textile and leather industries. According to Qadri, the sector is a leader in human development, currently providing over 90,000 direct jobs. Women make up more than 67 per cent of its workforce. It is also regarded as one of the most supportive sectors for women's economic empowerment, particularly in governorates, productive branches, and industrial zones across the Kingdom. Qadri noted that the sector also appeals to Jordanian youth through specialised training programmes and job opportunities designed to align with the demands of the modern labour market. In line with the global shift towards a green economy, Qadri said major factories in the sector have begun to adopt environmental and social sustainability standards. He added that these standards include the use of solar energy, water treatment technologies, and commitment to responsible production practices, enhancing the competitiveness of Jordanian products in both European and US markets.
