Brunei tempt Terengganu's Akhyar to spread his wings to Borneo team
PETALING JAYA: Winger Akhyar Rashid is on Brunei's radar ahead of their return to the Malaysian Super League in August. The 26-year-old, who joined Terengganu permanently earlier this year from Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT), has piqued the interest of Brunei, who are making a comeback in the domestic league after 17 years. 'Brunei are hoping to finalise the signing of Malaysian national team player Akhyar Rashid from Terengganu,' the club said in a statement. 'Akhyar signed a contract with JDT in 2018 before moving to Terengganu in 2024. Brunei are hoping to finalise the signing of the player for their debut season.' Brunei are currently still competing in the Singapore Premier League, but are building their squad to compete in Malaysia soon. If the signing goes through, Akhyar will be the second Malaysian player in the squad, following the addition of former Penang leftback Fairuz Zakaria. The club have also reeled in the services of Indonesian international Ramadhan Sananta. Akhyar has made 37 appearances for Terengganu since last year, scoring 10 goals and providing six assists in all competitions, including the Asean Club Championship. Brunei are also in talks to sign Philippines national team defensive midfielder Christian Rontini, who currently plays in the Thai League with Nongbua Pitchaya. They are also going after 27-year-old Japanese striker Tomoyuki Doi, who has scored 38 goals for Geylang International in the Singapore Premier League.

JDT bring in a new 'Spanish wall'
KUALA LUMPUR: Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) announced today that they have got a new wall at the back. That wall is imported. It comes from Spain in the form of centreback Antonio Glauder, who is JDT's latest signing for the 2025-2026 season. In a video posted on JDT's social media, the 1.8m Glauder is seen donning the No. 5 jersey, last worn by Indonesian international Jordi Amat. This also sparked speculation about Amat's JDT future. "We've got a new wall at the back! Welcome to Johor Darul Ta'zim FC, Antonio Glauder," read the caption accompanying the video. Glauder, 30, brings with him experience from several Spanish clubs, including youth stints at Barcelona (Under-16) and Villarreal (Under-19), before moving on to Espanyol B, Fuenlabrada and most recently, Cadiz CF. He also had a six-month spell with Croatian side NK Rudes in the 2017-2018 season. Netizens reacted quickly to the announcement. "It has begun," wrote Syahriman Mahat. Others drew attention to the No. 5 jersey. "So, it's confirmed that Amat will leave JDT because another player is using the No. 5 jersey," commented Ishfahan Shah.

JDT's Success Story: Too Fast For Malaysian Football To Handle?
Subscribe to our FREE In a powerful social media statement that sent ripples through Malaysian football, His Royal Highness Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim (TMJ), the Crown Prince and Regent of Johor, expressed his deep frustration with the current state of football politics in the country. 'We're stuck with those who can't tell the difference,' the royal statement began, highlighting a growing divide between modern football management and traditional mindsets. The Crown Prince's message emphasised JDT's (Johor Darul Ta'zim) remarkable 12-year journey of breaking records and setting new benchmarks in Malaysian and Asian football, transforming the club into a powerhouse both on and off the pitch. The statement particularly criticised the resistance to progress, suggesting that some within Malaysian football remain anchored to outdated approaches, preferring to prioritise domestic cups over league success and international competition. A Battle Between Tradition And Progress 'Malaysia football don't deserve JDT,' the post continued, reflecting the deep-seated frustration with what appears to be a clash between progressive football management and traditional mentalities. The hashtag #merekatakbiasa ('they're not used to it') punctuated the message, serving as a pointed commentary on the resistance to change within Malaysian football circles. This latest statement adds another chapter to the ongoing narrative of Malaysian football's struggle between tradition and modernisation, with JDT standing at the forefront of that evolution. JDT's unprecedented run of 11 consecutive Super League titles since 2014 stands as testament to this success, marking a stark contrast to the rotating championships of previous years. The transformation under TMJ's leadership appears to have made the club and its owner targets for criticism from those resistant to change. Football rivals and administrators, unable to directly challenge the Crown Prince, have resorted to targeting JDT as a proxy for their grievances. 'Sasaran utamanya adalah saya, menyerang saya secara langsung tak boleh, terpaksa menyerang JDT, saya akan meneruskan apa yang saya buat, saya tidak akan keluar dari bola sepak, saya akan meneruskannya' – DYAM TMJ. — Harimau Selatan X (@hsxofficials) Statistical Supremacy: A Decade Of Dominance In Numbers Since 2013, the Southern Tigers have amassed an extraordinary record of 340 victories in 481 games, maintaining an impressive 71% win rate. With only 69 losses and 72 draws, JDT's consistency has been nothing short of remarkable. The club's attacking prowess is evident in their staggering tally of 1,135 goals scored, while their defensive resilience is reflected in 221 clean sheets and just 399 goals conceded. These numbers tell the story of a well-balanced team that has dominated Malaysian football for over a decade. Recent Glory: From Cup Triumphs To Commercial Success Recent achievements have further cemented JDT's legacy, including a historic FA Cup hat-trick from 2022 to 2024/25. The crowning moment came in their record-breaking 6-1 victory over Selangor FC in the 2024-25 FA Cup final, marking the largest margin of victory since the tournament's inception in 1990. Their popularity continues to soar, evidenced by a record attendance of 34,644 fans at Sultan Ibrahim Stadium during their 2024-25 AFC Champions League Elite match against Buriram United, the most popular Thailand football club. Off the field, JDT's commercial success is equally impressive, with two This commercial expansion demonstrates the club's understanding that modern football success extends beyond the pitch. TMJ regularly shares updates about team developments, future plans, and even behind-the-scenes insights. Tunku Ismail on attacks and influence: 'Learn to accept it, or try to finish me off'
TMJ firmly denied any involvement in the cases that have captured national attention, including the acid attack on national footballer Faisal Halim and the assault involving a group of 'skinheads' at a local punk concert. Tunku Mahkota Ismail SHAH ALAM – The Regent of Johor (TMJ), Tunku Mahkota Ismail has finally addressed recent attempts to link him to several high-profile criminal incidents. He firmly denied any involvement in the cases that have captured national attention, including the acid attack on national footballer Faisal Halim and the assault involving a group of 'skinheads' at a local punk concert. Responding to the rumours, Tunku Ismail made it clear that neither he nor his football club, Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT), would resort to such actions. 'Whispers and speculations tried to associate me with the Faisal Halim incident. Let me be clear: neither I nor JDT would stoop to such a low level. I am a soldier. If I have something to say or do, I will not hide behind cowardly actions like that,' he wrote on Facebook. He also addressed insinuations linking him to the recent assault at a punk concert involving individuals from the 'skinhead' subculture. 'Some have tried to link that incident to me. A local punk concert, no less. Does my face look like someone who spends time headbanging at underground punk gigs?' he said with sarcasm. Tunku Ismail acknowledged that some people may feel threatened by the extent of his influence across various sectors in Malaysia. However, he made it clear that he has no intention of stepping back or fading away. 'If anyone is unsettled by my influence, that is their problem. It is part of the ecosystem. I am only 41, and my influence, power, experience, and resources will only grow from here. Influence, in my position, is not optional — it is inevitable. Over time, it will only strengthen. 'So here is my to accept it, or try to finish me off completely,' he added.
