Malaysia shares 5G direction, gives focus on online security at Tokyo APT-MM
TOKYO: Malaysia has shared its experience and direction in implementing dual 5G networks with countries in the Asia Pacific region through its participation in the Asia Pacific Telecommunity Ministerial Meeting (APT-MM) 2025, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. Fahmi, who is leading the country's delegation to APT-MM for the first time from May 30 to 31, said that at the same time, focus was also given to efforts to address online security issues that are a challenge for many countries, as well as the National Digital Network (JENDELA) infrastructure programme. '(This) meeting can certainly provide an opportunity for us to bring and show other countries what we have achieved through the programmes and ideas we have. 'Our experience in implementing the 5G network first as a single network, then as a dual network and our experience implementing large projects such as JENDELA as well as the project point of presence,' he told Bernama, here. Fahmi also stressed that there is a need for regulatory bodies from APT member countries to emphasise aspects of online supervision and security, including online gambling and cyber fraud issues in the region. 'One of the ideas I put forward is the need for senior officers to meet every year, and it is appropriate to hold a workshop for countries in the Asia Pacific region to state the problems faced and how these issues are resolved. 'Perhaps we can share our experiences, lessons, solutions that have been implemented, which can be adopted by other countries,' he explained. Also held in conjunction with this meeting were a series of bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Asia Pacific countries, as well as international organisations responsible for the telecommunications industry. During this APT-MM 2025, Fahmi held bilateral meetings with delegations from host Japan, Indonesia, Fiji, China, Iran, Australia, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the GSM Association (GSMA). According to Fahmi, there is a need for agencies such as the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to closely examine the legal aspects and implementation of efforts to regulate online safety, as is done by Australia. 'We have conveyed to Australia, and we hope that a team from Malaysia will be able to go there or hold online discussions so that we can examine and evaluate. 'Besides the steps they have taken, there are things that we can learn to consider, to see if they are suitable to be implemented in Malaysia,' he said. Meanwhile, Malaysia also expressed its intention to continue its membership as a council member in the ITU for the 2027-2030 session. 'We have also conveyed to the ministers, counterparts that I have held bilateral meetings with and we hope that friends of Malaysia will be able to support our presence in ITU Council,' he added. The APT-MM 2025 edition also saw the launch of the 'Tokyo Statement 2025', which emphasises six priorities: digital connectivity, digital innovation and entrepreneurship, trust and security, digital inclusion and capacity building, environmental sustainability, and regional and international cooperation. Themed 'Harnessing Emerging Technologies for Sustainable, Inclusive and Equitable Digital Transformation in the Asia-Pacific', APT-MM 2025 brings together 31 member countries and 19 affiliates comprising governments, regulators and private agencies from the Asia-Pacific region.

MOE acknowledges issue of limited internet access
KALABAKAN: The Ministry of Education (MOE) has acknowledged the ongoing issue of limited or non-existent internet access in school areas, particularly following the launch of the digital education policy. Its minister, Fadhlina Sidek, said the challenges faced by schools, especially in rural areas, cannot be overlooked and remain a key priority for the MOE. To address this, she said, the ministry has introduced the Parliamentary Follow-up Programme, which involves visits to affected locations to assess the situation firsthand. 'We at MOE are fully committed, and with the support of the Ministry of Communications, we are consistently working to improve internet access and connectivity in schools. 'There are many initiatives and support programmes from the Ministry of Communications to complete the digital ecosystem,' she told reporters in conjunction with her two-day working visit under the Parliamentary Follow-up Programme, which ended today. Fadhlina, accompanied by Kalabakan Member of Parliament Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy, visited two schools in the Kalabakan parliamentary constituency, namely Sekolah Kebangsaan Ulu Kalabakan and Sekolah Kebangsaan Kalabakan, as well as a project site for the construction of an additional building for Sekolah Kebangsaan Umas. Meanwhile, Fadhlina said the ministry would ensure that every school gets smartboards and tablets to facilitate the teaching and learning process in schools. 'This is to encourage and enhance the children's learning experience in the classroom, making it more interactive, while ensuring our children are not left behind. 'Sabah is among the states where digital adoption at the teacher level is very encouraging. We want teachers with these skills to ensure their students also gain access to digital facilities and skills. I think we have a teacher activity centre that can be fully utilised to conduct digital programmes and activities,' she said. Meanwhile, Fadhlina reminded teachers to emphasise ethical practices in the use of technology and digital tools, ensuring that students use them wisely and are able to differentiate between educational content and materials that could negatively influence their morals. Meanwhile, Andi Muhammad Suryady thanked the Ministry of Communications for ensuring that the people get quality internet access, especially in school areas. He said broadband services through the National Digital Network (JENDELA) initiative play a key role in attracting telecommunications network providers to expand coverage, especially in rural areas. Infrastructure development and upgrading of basic telecommunications networks are important to accommodate the needs of the digital lifestyle in this era, he added.

N.Sembilan Records Increase In Tourist Arrivals Last Year
SEREMBAN, April 30 (Bernama) -- Negeri Sembilan recorded an increase in tourist arrivals last year, of about 20 million tourists, compared to 5.5 million recorded in 2021, the State Assembly was told today. State Tourism, Culture and Arts Action Committee chairman Nicole Tan said that in conjunction with the 2026 Visit Negeri Sembilan Year (TMNS 2026), the state's promotional efforts will be expanded. 'To attract more foreign tourists to Negeri Sembilan, various strategic initiatives have been planned, including intensifying international promotions through participation in tourism exhibitions and sales missions abroad, leveraging digital platforms, and collaborating with both domestic and international travel agencies,' she said. She said various promotional activities have been scheduled to be held in stages throughout this year through the Negeri Sembilan Tourism Board, starting with the pre-launch of TMNS 2026 in June and culminating with the official launch of TMNS 2026 in December, to be held in Port Dickson. Meanwhile, State Heritage, Technology, Innovation and Digital Action Committee Chairman Datuk Mohd Faizal Ramli said the state was committed to moving towards the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology in various sectors, in line with efforts to strengthen the state's digital transformation. Mohd Faizal said that among the key areas where artificial intelligence (AI) could be applied are the enhancement of the digital economy, public service delivery, urban management planning, and other related sectors. However, he said, the challenges remain, particularly in terms of inadequate technological infrastructure. 'In this regard, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is committed to expanding internet coverage through the National Digital Network (JENDELA) initiative. 'This includes the construction of new telecommunications structures, the development of fibre optic broadband for fixed-line connections, and extending 5G network coverage across populated areas,' he said.
