MCMC acts to fix mobile coverage gap in Kampung Sungai Relai

KOTA BHARU: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is stepping in to address the absence of mobile network coverage in Kampung Sungai Relai, Gua Musang. A recent inspection confirmed the area has no service despite the presence of a 76-metre tower, which is currently used only for microwave backhaul between two towers. 'A cellular quality of service test confirmed there is no mobile coverage in the village,' MCMC said in a statement today. To enforce compliance, MCMC has issued a Section 51(2) notice under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 to service providers failing to meet coverage standards. The commission is also working on a solution under the Jalinan Digital Negara (JENDELA) initiative, proposing a new tower site to enhance connectivity for residents. Additionally, discussions are underway with telecommunications companies to upgrade the existing tower to support 4G coverage via fibre-optic connections. This upgrade aims to provide a more stable and reliable network for the community. MCMC has assured continuous monitoring to ensure timely implementation, guaranteeing residents access to dependable communication services. - Bernama

JENDELA Phase 2 starts September with hybrid telecom approach

KUALA LUMPUR: The second phase of Malaysia's National Digital Network (JENDELA) will start in September, adopting a hybrid approach to speed up nationwide connectivity, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil announced. Nearly 3,000 sites will be upgraded under Phase 2, moving away from traditional tower construction. 'We are considering hybrid solutions, like 30-metre monopoles, instead of full-sized towers where feasible. This will accelerate deployment,' Fahmi said during a Dewan Rakyat session. The minister was responding to Julau MP Datuk Larry Sng, who raised concerns over poor 4G and 5G coverage in rural schools. Fahmi confirmed that 4G coverage in Julau's populated areas has reached 58.28 per cent, with 43 new telecom towers and 44 upgraded transmitter stations completed as of June 30. Fibre-optic access has also been extended to 1,391 premises. However, 5G rollout in Julau is still under review, with priority given to urban and industrial zones. 'Rural areas, including Julau, will receive 5G in stages based on infrastructure readiness,' he added. Sarawak's SMART 600 initiative is complementing federal efforts, with 29 new towers already operational and 15 under construction. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has partnered with Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) to boost connectivity in the state. Additionally, 12 Point of Presence (PoP) broadband hubs in Julau now offer high-speed internet, with 1,225 subscription ports supporting speeds up to 1Gbps. – Bernama

JENDELA Phase 2 Begins September With Hybrid Approach, Says Fahmi

KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 (Bernama) -- The second phase of the National Digital Network (JENDELA) plan is expected to commence in September, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said. He said the initiative, which involves nearly 3,000 sites nationwide, will no longer rely solely on the construction of conventional telecommunication towers. Instead, a hybrid approach will be adopted to expedite deployment. 'For phase two, we do not intend to build traditional towers alone, as some areas requiring coverage may not need a 76-metre or 60-metre tower. A 30-metre monopole might suffice, so a more hybrid solution is being considered, which we expect will speed up implementation,' he said. Fahmi was responding to a supplementary question from Datuk Larry Sng Wei Shien (PBM–Julau) during the oral question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today, who asked when the second phase of JENDELA would begin. In reply to Sng's main question regarding 4G and 5G internet coverage in the Julau parliamentary constituency, particularly at rural schools that still face connectivity challenges, Fahmi said that 4G coverage in populated areas of Julau has reached 58.28 per cent He said that the expansion of internet coverage in rural and remote schools is being carried out under the JENDELA plan. 'As of June 30, 43 out of 48 new communication towers have been completed and are operational, while 44 out of 45 transmitter stations have been upgraded. Additionally, 1,391 premises have been equipped with fibre-optic access,' he added. On 5G connectivity, Fahmi said implementation in Julau remains under consideration, as priority is currently given to densely populated and industrial areas. 'Nonetheless, 5G coverage will be extended to rural areas, including Julau, in stages based on need and infrastructure readiness,' he said.

Fahmi leads Malaysia at WSIS+20 Geneva to boost digital inclusivity

GENEVA: Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil is leading Malaysia's delegation at the World Summit on the Information Society+20 High-Level Event (WSIS+20) in Geneva from July 7 to 11. The event serves as a key platform for global leaders to discuss ICT-driven sustainable development. Malaysia's participation aligns with the MADANI Government's commitment to fostering an inclusive digital ecosystem. The country aims to highlight its achievements in rural internet expansion, ICT literacy, and digital transformation through initiatives like the National Digital Network Plan (JENDELA) and National Information Dissemination Centres (NADI). The ministry stated, 'This participation brings various strategic benefits to the country, including global recognition of Malaysia's leadership in expanding rural internet access, communication technology inclusivity, and initiatives to empower ICT literacy among citizens in line with the well-being values of Malaysia MADANI.' WSIS+20, a United Nations-led forum, focuses on leveraging ICT for sustainable growth across 11 key areas, including infrastructure, cybersecurity, and capacity building. Since 2012, the WSIS Prizes have honoured 234 winning projects and 648 champions for impactful technological advancements. Fahmi is also set to engage in over 10 bilateral meetings with officials from the UK, Saudi Arabia, Poland, and others, alongside discussions with ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin. Govt to boost highway Internet coverage with new connectivity drive

GEORGE TOWN: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will collaborate with the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) to identify nearly 50 kilometres of road nationwide that currently have no telecommunications coverage. Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the initiative is part of the government's commitment to the principle of 'where there's a road, there's Internet', aimed at improving connectivity along highways across the country. 'There are several key locations currently under discussion, and my hope is that these can be included in Phase Two of the National Digital Network Plan (JENDELA), as many of these areas will likely require new tower construction. 'So, insya-Allah, we will assist,' he told reporters after visiting the YES Tanjung Asam 4G MOCN Tower during the 'Where There's a Road, There's Internet' programme in Tanjung Asam, Bayan Lepas here today. Also present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari and Bayan Lepas assemblyman Datuk Azrul Mahathir Aziz, who is also Penang Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker. Fahmi also announced that the Communications Ministry is aiming to implement a proof of concept (POC) for direct-to-cell technology via Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites in several locations during the third or fourth quarter of this year. He said the initiative is currently delayed due to technical issues, but discussions are ongoing with LEO satellite operators to address connectivity challenges in remote areas, including maritime zones. 'With this technology, satellites can act as cell towers from space. For instance, someone on the coastline would be able to contact authorities immediately in emergencies, such as drowning incidents,' he explained. 'In places like islands where building 60-metre towers may not be feasible, direct-to-cell satellite technology can be a viable solution,' he added.
