New cable factory in KK to create jobs, cut logistics costs

Tun Musa (right) listening to Hisham's explanation. KOTA KINABALU (Aug 6): The opening of a cable factory in Kota Kinabalu is expected to create job opportunities for Sabah Bumiputeras. Datuk Seri NW Hisham Abdul Wahab, chairman of Federal Power Sdn Bhd, stated that this manufacturing plant is scheduled to open next year, serving Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei Darussalam and Indonesia. 'For those without skills, we will send them for internal training at Federal Power's factory in Selangor to gain experience. Transportation costs from Peninsular Malaysia to Sabah are relatively high. Therefore, opening a factory here will help reduce logistics costs and subsequently lower market prices,' he told the media after paying a courtesy visit to the Head of State, Tun Musa Aman, on Monday. The visit aimed to inform and explain to Tun Musa about Federal Power's proposal to expand its business to Sabah. The company specializes in manufacturing various types of cables and conductors that meet diverse needs, specifications, and international standards such as British Standards (BS), Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS), International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), Malaysian Standards (MS) and Brunei Standards (DES).

YIM boosts social innovation in Terengganu through JIS programme

KUALA TERENGGANU: The 2025 Eastern Zone Jejak Inovasi Sosial (JIS) programme has successfully strengthened partnerships between Yayasan Inovasi Malaysia (YIM), local communities, state governments, and academic researchers, according to YIM chief executive officer Dr Sharmila Mohamed Salleh. She stated that the initiative achieved its goal of fostering collaboration and gathering critical insights for future social innovation interventions. The programme includes four key components: the Malaysia Social Innovation Initiative, MyIS Komuniti and MyIS Akar Umbi, Innovation Catalyst Volunteers (iCATS), and the Youth Innovative Challenge (YIC). 'Through JIS, we gained in-depth understanding of social, economic, and environmental challenges in the eastern zone, particularly in Kuala Terengganu,' Sharmila said. 'One key focus was the struggles of the fishing community, which will be analysed before solutions are proposed by experts.' She emphasised the importance of stakeholder feedback, noting that social innovation requires a deep grasp of community issues. The programme included engagement sessions where key concerns were identified for further assessment. Kuala Terengganu MP Datuk Ahmad Amzad Mohamed @ Hashim attended the event, flagging off the YIM delegation vehicles for the Eastern Zone JIS. Meanwhile, the YIC competition at the Kuala Terengganu Science Centre saw three winners from local universities advancing to the inter-zone round, competing for the MyIS Perintis grant worth RM400,000. Sharmila highlighted that the best innovator will receive an opportunity to study technology and innovation at a Swiss university. She also visited four innovation projects, including modular batik production and essential oil extraction, to assess challenges faced during development. 'Social innovation isn't just about the final product but also the process,' she added. 'For instance, modular batik faces cost and durability issues, which we hope researchers can help resolve.' - Bernama

JIS Boosts Partnership Between Communities, Researchers

KUALA TERENGGANU, July 28 (Bernama) -- The implementation of the 2025 Eastern Zone Jejak Inovasi Sosial (JIS) programme has successfully fostered close collaboration between Yayasan Inovasi Malaysia (YIM), local communities, state governments, and academic researchers, said YIM chief executive officer Dr Sharmila Mohamed Salleh. She said the programme had achieved its objective of strengthening collaboration and gathering crucial input for the planning of more effective and targeted social innovation interventions in the future. According to her, the four main programmes under JIS, the Malaysia Social Innovation Initiative, MyIS Komuniti and MyIS Akar Umbi, Innovation Catalyst Volunteers (iCATS), and the Youth Innovative Challenge (YIC), enabled YIM to gain in-depth insights and conduct a comprehensive assessment of various social, economic, and environmental issues through the mapping of innovative products and social innovation talent in the eastern zone, notably around Kuala Terengganu. 'Among the highlights, the Eastern Zone JIS focused on issues and challenges faced by the fishing community in Terengganu. Throughout the engagement sessions, several key issues were identified, which will be analysed before being presented to the Subject Matter Expert Committee for assessment and proposed solutions. (These solutions) will then help determine potential innovations or technologies that can be replicated within the community. 'Therefore, feedback from all stakeholders and relevant parties is crucial, as social innovation stems from a deep understanding of the issues, challenges, and realities faced by communities,' she told reporters during the JIS programme held around Kuala Terengganu yesterday. Also present was Kuala Terengganu Member of Parliament Datuk Ahmad Amzad Mohamed @ Hashim, who officiated at the highlight of the event, the flag-off ceremony for the YIM delegation vehicles for the Eastern Zone 2025 JIS. Sharmila also said that the YIC, held at the Kuala Terengganu Science Centre, saw three winners emerge from among students of institutions of higher learning in Terengganu, who will advance to the inter-zone competition to compete for the MyIS Perintis grant, offering a total of RM400,000 to 10 winners. She said a student with the best innovative product will be selected to gain exposure and experience in technology and innovation at a university in Switzerland. Sharmila said that the YIC is an innovation competition that showcases final-year student projects at the Diploma, Degree, and Master's levels, with the potential to deliver meaningful social impact to communities.

NIPPON KINZOKU Launches New Sales Expansion of Die Wear-Resistant Stainless Steel 'L-DieL Finish' as an 'Eco-Product'

TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--NIPPON KINZOKU CO., LTD. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo) will strengthen sales of its environmentally friendly product, L-DieL (Long Die Life) finish stainless steel, which reduces die wear. L-DieL Finish modifies (softens) the passive oxide film on the surface of stainless steel, thereby reducing die wear during pressing operations and contributing to improved productivity and cost savings for our customers. The passive oxide film that maintains the corrosion resistance of stainless steel is mainly composed of chromium oxide and is extremely hard. Although the film thickness is only about 10 nanometers, it has a detrimental effect (accelerated wear) on press dies that come into repeated contact. To soften this film and reduce die wear, we have developed the L-DieL finish as a surface treatment. We have certified our L-DieL finish as an 'Eco-Product,' which improves productivity and reduces costs for our customers. Our goal is to achieve net zero CO₂ emissions by 2050, and we are committed to sustainable manufacturing through the widespread use of environmentally friendly materials. Additionally, this product aligns with our 11th management plan, "NIPPON KINZOKU 2030," and is a unique product that meets customer needs based on the "Near Net Performance" keyword (achieving the required performance of the final product with the material). Features of L-DieL Finish Reducing die wear during press processing, expected to extend die life. Compatible with most stainless steels, including SUS304, SUS430, and various surface finishes. Chemical composition and mechanical properties comply with JIS standards. Appearance and corrosion resistance are equivalent to those of general-purpose stainless steel. L-DieL Finish Structure Our unique surface treatment technology softens the passive oxide film. This reduces die wear and decreases the frequency of maintenance. Manufacturing Range Steel Types: SUS304, SUS430, etc. Finish: Spring, BA Thickness [mm]: 0.08–0.50 Width [mm]: 600 or less
