4 Maoists killed in encounter in Bijapur
Four Maoists were killed in an encounter with Security forces in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district on Saturday. Based on intelligence inputs on the presence of Maoists in the south-western region of Bijapur, a search operation was undertaken by the security forces. The south-west region of Bijapur is where the most formidable force of Maoists army wing, Battalion 1 of People's Liberation Guerilla Army (PLGA), and west Bastar division cadres move. The encounter broke out on Saturday evening and was still underway at the time of going to press. 'So far, bodies of four Maoists have been recovered in the exchange of fire. A huge quantity of weapons, including INSAS and SLR rifles, explosive materials and daily-use items have been recovered from the spot,' said IGP, Bastar range, Sundarraj P. In Jharkhand's Gumla district, three suspected members of the Jharkhand Jan Mukti Parishad (JJMP), a banned Maoist outfit, were killed in an encounter with security forces on Saturday morning, officials said. The exchange of fire started during a joint anti-Maoist operation carried out by personnel of Jharkhand Jaguar (JJ) and Gumla district police. IG Operational, Michael Raj said they received a tip-off about the activities of Maoists in Ghagra forest. 'JJ and the district police jointly initiated the operation. During the crossfire between the security personnel and the Maoists in the morning, three members of JJMP were killed,' he said. An AK-47 rifle and two INSAS rifles were recovered from the site.

Three operatives of Jharkhand Jan Mukti Parishad (JJMP), a banned splinter outfit of Maoists, were gunned down in a firefight in Gumla, Jharkhand, on Saturday morning, while at least four Maoists were killed in an evening encounter still on between security forces and Maoists in the dense forests of south-west Bijapur district, in Chhattisgarh's Bastar division. Jharkhand police officers said an encounter broke out between JJMP ultras and security forces in Lawadag forest, under Ghagra police station limits, around 10 am. One AK-47 assault rifle, two Insas rifles and a country-made gun were recovered from the slain operatives. Gumla SP Haris Bin Zaman said a police team had initiated a cordon-and-search operation based on intelligence inputs that suggested that JJMP operatives had gathered in Lawadag forest to plan an attack. A team led by Gumla sub-divisional police officer Suresh Prasad Yadav and comprising officers from Ghagra and Bishunpur police stations began the cordon-and-search along with jawans of Jharkhand Jaguar, the state's elite anti-extremism outfit, and district police personnel. "The ultras opened fire as soon as security forces reached the spot. Jawans fired in retaliation, killing three JJMP ultras. The gun battle in Chhattisgarh on Saturday was part of a larger anti-Naxal operation launched following specific intelligence inputs about Maoists in the region. Bastar zone IGP P Sundarraj said, "So far, four bodies of Maoists have been recovered from the encounter site, along with a significant cache of weapons, including Insas and SLR rifles, explosive material, and daily-use items. Intermittent exchange of fire between Maoists and security forces has continued through the evening, with troops advancing cautiously through the terrain." The identity of the killed Maoists had not been officially confirmed yet, the IGP said.

Three Naxalites were killed in an encounter with security forces in Jharkhand's Gumla district earlier in the day. According to officials, intelligence inputs had indicated the presence of members of the Jharkhand Jan Mukti Parishad (JJMP), a breakaway faction of the CPI (Maoist), at Lawadag in the Ghaghra police station limits. Acting on the input, a joint operation was launched by the Jharkhand Jaguar force and Gumla Police. Police said an exchange of fire took place between the security forces and the Naxalites, with several rounds discharged from both sides. Following the gunfight, an AK-47 rifle and two INSAS rifles were recovered from the scene. "One of the deceased was identified as Dilip Lohra, 32, a resident of Belagada in Ghaghra. The identification of the other two deceased is still underway," Gumla Superintendent of Police Haris Bin Zaman said news agency PTI. The SP said that the JJMP members had been hiding in a house near Lawadag Choraltwa village for the last two to three days. "As the police reached the spot, they opened fire and attempted to flee. In the exchange of fire that followed, the three JJMP members were killed, while two managed to escape," he added.
