Gender-neutrality push of JNU admin futile: Students

NEW DELHI: After the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) administration decided to replace the Hindi term 'Kulpati' with 'Kulguru' as the Vice-Chancellor's designation, citing gender neutrality and alignment with ancient Indian academic traditions, students on Wednesday strongly criticised the move as superficial and politically-motivated. The JNU Students' Union (JNUSU), in a letter dated June 4, wrote, 'We understand your urgency to change the designation from 'Kulpati' to 'Kulguru' as a move toward gender neutrality. We do not hesitate to say that you are following the path of your ideological home, i.e, RSS-BJP.' The decision, made during an Executive Council meeting earlier this year, follows similar developments in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, where universities adopted 'Kulguru' to reflect the 'guru-shishya' tradition and remove gendered connotations from titles. However, calling the change symbolic, JNUSU added, 'Your name-change gesture rings hollow without substantive action. We urge you to move beyond symbolism: reinstate GSCASH, restore deprivation points, build gender-neutral facilities, and implement transgender reservations.' Students also criticised dismantling of Gender Sensitisation Committee Against Sexual Harassment (GSCASH) and the removal of deprivation points in PhD admissions, arguing that these changes have disproportionately affect marginalised groups, including women and transgender students While the university says the change is aimed at promoting inclusivity, students argue that inclusivity cannot be achieved without structural reform: 'Symbolic gestures alone cannot ensure gender justice.'

'Optics over action': JNU students' union hits out over ‘kulguru' move

Jawaharlal Nehru University's decision to replace the term 'Kulpati' with 'Kulguru' for the designation of Vice Chancellor in all official academic records, including degree certificates, drew sharp criticism from the JNU Students' Union. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the JNUSU accused the administration of engaging in 'optics over action' and demanded urgent reforms instead of mere gestures on issues of gender justice. 'We understand your urgency to change the designation as a move toward gender neutrality. But symbolic gestures alone cannot ensure gender justice; fundamental transformation requires institutional reforms,' the statement said. The student body also accused the vice-chancellor of following a 'political and ideological trend' of renaming rather than reforming, likening the change to what it described as the Modi government's pattern of "functioning as a name changer while claiming to be a game changer". The statement also criticised the administration's 'unwillingness' to engage in dialogue, citing unanswered requests for a meeting on the JNU entrance examination. The change in the name was approved in a recent meeting of the university's Executive Council held in April, and action has been initiated by the Controller of Examinations to implement the shift. The university's move is in line with similar changes already implemented by the Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh governments. The JNUSU also listed four key demands in the statement, including immediate reinstatement of the Gender Sensitisation Committee Against Sexual Harassment (GSCASH), which it claimed was more democratic and survivor-friendly than the existing Internal Complaints Committee (ICC); restoration of deprivation points in PhD admissions, which helped level the field for marginalised and women students; construction of gender-neutral washrooms and hostels; and the implementation of reservations for transgender students in line with the Supreme Court's NALSA judgment. JNU Replaces Kulpati With Kulguru For Its Vice Chancellor. Here's Why

New Delhi: The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has decided to replace the term 'Kulpati' for vice chancellor with 'Kulguru' in all degree certificates and academic records. The decision was made during a meeting of the university's Executive Council held in April. The minutes of the meeting stated as agenda: "To change/rename of designation from Kulpati to Kulguru for the signature on the Degree Certificates and other academic documents." The directive has been marked for action by the Controller of Examinations. According to a JNU official, the term is not only culturally significant but also gender-neutral, offering a more inclusive alternative to the conventional titles used in Indian universities. The university's move is in line with similar changes already implemented by the Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh governments. Rajasthan passed an amendment in February 2025 to adopt Kulguru and Pratikulguru in place of Kulpati and Upkulpati, a decision approved in March. Madhya Pradesh followed suit in July 2024. JNUSU President Nitish Kumar said the varsity must also look to make the washrooms and hostels gender-neutral. "Along with changing Kulpati to Kulguru, the VC should also fulfill the demands for gender-neutral washrooms and gender-neutral hostels. In addition, JNUEE should be reinstated for PhD admissions and the deprivation points must be brought back. Move beyond symbolic gestures and work towards concrete gender justice," the Leftist leader said in a post on X.

NEW DELHI: Amid rising COVID-19 cases in Delhi, a student at Jawaharlal Nehru University's (JNU) Godavari Hostel tested positive, raising concern across the campus. In response, the JNU Students' Union (JNUSU) urged the administration to implement immediate preventive and medical measures. In a letter to the vice-chancellor, JNUSU demanded a COVID Care Centre on campus—following a 2021 Delhi High Court directive—along with testing, medical supervision, emergency sanitization, and essential supplies. On Saturday, the university issued an advisory asking students and staff to maintain hygiene, wear masks in gatherings, and wash hands frequently.

JNU issues advisory after rise in Covid cases and confirmed positive case in hostel

New Delhi: In response to a rise in Covid-19 cases in the city and a confirmed case at Godavari Hostel, Jawaharlal Nehru University has issued an advisory urging preventive measures across the campus. A student tested positive for the virus on Saturday, prompting Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) to call for immediate action from the university administration. On Sunday, JNUSU released a statement confirming that the student is recovering and experiencing only mild symptoms. "The chief medical officer (CMO) has informed us that current positive cases are being managed through home isolation, and there is no need for separate isolation wards at this stage. Any such decisions will be taken based on the evolving situation," the statement read. The students' union also urged students to stay calm and avoid panic. "The student who tested positive is doing well and currently only has a mild headache, with no fever or sore throat," it added. The university's official advisory emphasised the importance of immediate preventive action to protect students, staff and residents. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Investi in Azioni Italia fino a 2€ BG SAXO Scopri di più Undo It requested all members of the university community to follow basic Covid-19 precautions, such as frequent handwashing or sanitisation, wearing masks during public gatherings and maintaining personal hygiene. "Deans of schools and chairpersons of special centres are advised to constitute Covid monitoring committees at their respective levels," the advisory stated. In addition, the university's health centre and security branch have been tasked with raising awareness among frontline staff. "The chief medical officer, along with the health centre and security branch, will take steps to inform and sensitise field workers," the communication added. Students and staff are urged to report any positive cases immediately. For those in need of medical assistance, the university has provided emergency contact numbers, including access to ambulance services. . MSID:: 121548540 413 |
