A new Pride and Prejudice felt redundant; we already have the excellent 2005 film and the almost perfect 1995 miniseries. That's without mentioning how shockingly bad Netflix's 2022 film adaptation of Persuasion was. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad After learning that Dolly Alderton was behind the script, I was cautiously optimistic for the new six episode series – a feeling which was bolstered by early cast announcements. It was hard to maintain caution when learning that Olivia Colman would be playing Mrs Bennet, with Emma Corrin as Elizabeth and Jack Lowden as Mr Darcy. My excitement over his casting as Mr Darcy essentially tipped me over the edge of my hesitancy for this project. Even though he has had a busy few years with shows such as Slow Horses and The Gold as well as films including Mary, Queen of Scots, Tornado and The Outrun, under his belt, I doubt he is an actor I would ever be sick of watching. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Pride and Prejudice Netflix cast full of inspired choices Even if I hadn't already decided I was looking forward to Netflix's Jane Austen adaptation, it would have been hard not to change my mind when the full cast was revealed. There's Jane Bennet who will be portrayed by Freya Mavor, another Scottish actress. While Industry has been on my list for a while – and this may be the final push I need to actually sit down and watch it – others may recognise her for her roles in shows such as Skins, The White Queen or historical BBC drama series Marie Antoinette. You may also recognise her from French language films and shows, as she has starred in several. Rhea Norwood – who feels very appropriate for the role having seen Heartstopper – has been cast as Lydia, with Kitty and Mary to be played by newcomers Hollie Avery – an Edinburgh University graduate – and Hopey Parish respectively. The recent news about Netflix's Pride and Prejudice has been nothing but exciting, from our first glimpse at the Bennet family to all of the casting announcements. And despite my anticipation for more, I can't help but wonder what it will be like to see a new take on an old favourite. I am choosing to have faith. So far my doubts have been very gently been put to rest, but there are certainly big boots to fill.

Here's Your First Look at Emma Corrin and Olivia Colman in Netflix's New Pride & Prejudice
I firmly believe that, like Little Women and Wuthering Heights, every generation gets the Pride & Prejudice they deserve. For those who came of age in the mid-'90s, that was the glorious BBC adaptation starring a note-perfect Jennifer Ehle and a wet-white-shirt-wearing Colin Firth. For those, like me, who grew up in the aughts, it was Joe Wright's ravishing, Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen-led effort. (This is still, in my humble opinion, the best take on this literary classic.) And now, Gen Z is about to have their own: a six-part limited series reimagining of Jane Austen's scintillating romp is coming to Netflix. And the cast is to die for. On April 10, it was announced by the streamer that Golden Globe-winning period drama regular Emma Corrin (The Crown, Lady Chatterley's Lover, Nosferatu) would be taking the hotly contested part of Elizabeth Bennet, while Jack Lowden (Saoirse Ronan's husband and the star of War & Peace, Mary Queen of Scots, Benediction, and Slow Horses), would be the inscrutable Mr. Darcy. And as for the role of the wonderfully silly (and increasingly desperate) Mrs. Bennet? None other than Oscar winner Olivia Colman, Corrin's fellow Crown alumni, will slip into her frilly bonnet. More casting news followed on July 29: The Holiday, Scoop, and The Diplomat's Rufus Sewell will be the wry Mr. Bennet; Industry's Freya Mavor will be the angelic Jane Bennet; Heartstopper's Rhea Norwood will be the flighty Lydia; and recent graduates Hollie Avery and Hopey Parish will make their screen debuts as the giggly Kitty and the somber Mary, respectively. Then there's internet boyfriend Louis Partridge as the dastardly Mr. Wickham; Fleabag's Jamie Demetriou as the humorless Mr. Collins; Bad Sisters' Daryl McCormack as the kindly Mr. Bingley; and the formidable Fiona Shaw as the terrifying Lady Catherine de Bourg, so memorably embodied by Dame Judi Dench in the 2005 version. The supporting cast is rounded out with Domino Day's Siena Kelly as the glamorous Caroline Bingley; We Are Lady Parts' Anjana Vasan as the Bennet sisters' aunt, Mrs. Gardiner; The Tudors' Sebastian Armesto as her husband, Mr. Gardiner; Rosie Cavaliero as Lady Lucas; Justin Edwards as Sir William Lucas; Saffron Coomber as Mrs. Hurst, Bingley's other sister; James Dryden as Mr. Hurst; James Northcote as Colonel Forster; Eloise Webb as Harriet Forster; and Isabella Sermon as the luminous Georgiana Darcy.

'Slow Horses' actor Jack Lowden to star in 'Berlin Noir' adaptation
July 17 (UPI) -- Slow Horses actor Jack Lowden has signed on to star in Apple TV+'s adaptation of Philip Kerr's bestselling Berlin Noir book series. Set in the 1920s, the origin story for detective Bernie Gunther will be filmed in Berlin. Writer and executive producer Peter Straughan -- whose credits include Conclave, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and Wolf Hall -- will be the show-runner. Oscar-winner Tom Hanks is among the series' producers. "Bernie is a police officer, newly promoted to the intimidating and elite Berlin Murder Squad, and must investigate what seems to be a serial killer targeting victims on the fringes of society," a synopsis said. "Bernie's Berlin is a city of unprecedented freedom and dizzying turbulence, the Nazis just a distant nightmare waiting in the wings. With the political and social world shifting to a new norm, we see Bernie fighting for truth, whatever the cost." No other casting has been announced yet.

Woke Netflix bosses AXE iconic moment from Pride & Prejudice remake for ridiculous reason
MR Darcy's wet top will be packed away for a Pride and Prejudice remake to avoid objectifying men. A dripping Colin Firth emerging from a lake got fans drooling in 1995. 2 But woke Netflix bosses have ruled there will be no repeat when actor Jack Lowden plays Mr Darcy in its forthcoming version of Jane Austen's classic novel. Non-binary Emma Corrin has been cast as the heroine Elizabeth Bennet in the drama, potentially dropping later this year. A TV insider said many fans would be disappointed as the famous BBC scene 'got millions of women hot under the collar'. They added: 'It is also credited for sparking subsequent moments of male objectification on screen — like Aidan Turner' s famous topless scything scene in Poldark. 'But Netflix execs have made it clear they don't want a repeat.' A sodden Mr Darcy topped a 2013 poll of favourite TV scenes but it did not feature in Austen's 1813 novel. Last year the shirt which was worn in the scene went up for auction and was sold for £20,000. Netflix was approached for comment.

Three British actors become new favourites to play James Bond after one A-list star was branded 'too adorable' for the role
Three British actors could be in line to play the next James Bond, after Tom Holland was dubbed 'too adorable' for the role. Supporters have been eagerly waiting to find out who will be the next star with a 'license to kill' after Daniel Craig relinquished the part with the 2021 film No Time To Die. Following months of speculation, three clear favourites for the coveted role at last emerged on Tuesday from Coral Bookmakers. It is believed Kick Ass star Aaron Taylor-Johnson, 35, Dunkirk actor Jack Lowden, also 35, and Netflix star Theo James, 40, being among the top contenders. Bookmaker Coral have reported seeing a strong wave of support behind Aaron with the British actor as the 9-4 favourite for the role. Meanwhile Theo is second best in the betting at 4-1, while Jack is backed at 5-1. Elsewhere the betting site have Superman star Henry Cavill, 42, with odds of 10-1. Coral's John Hill said: 'We've seen another strong wave of support behind Aaron Taylor-Johnson in our next James Bond betting. Although other names have been linked with the role in recent weeks. 'The British actor remains the man punters are backing to replace Daniel Craig'. However, it is believe to not be possible for Spiderman star Tom to bag the role of 007 as he begins filming Spider Man 4 - which has the reported working name Spider-Man: Brand New Day - in the coming months. The studio announced on Wednesday that Denis Villeneuve - best known for directing Warner Bros.' two-part Dune adaptation - has signed on to direct the untitled film Bond film, via Amazon press release. The French-Canadian filmmaker, 57, will also serve as executive producer of the project alongside Tanya Lapointe. Amazon had previously announced Amy Pascal and David Heyman as the film's producers, after the studio parted ways with longtime 007 caretakers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. The news comes just over three years after Amazon completed its massive $8.5billion acquisition of MGM Studios that included the James Bond franchise. There hasn't been a Bond film since 2021's No Time to Die, the final instalment with Daniel Craig as the beloved secret agent. The director said in a statement, 'Some of my earliest movie-going memories are connected to 007. I grew up watching James Bond films with my father, ever since Dr. No with Sean Connery.' He added, 'I'm a die-hard Bond fan. To me, he's sacred territory. I intend to honor the tradition and open the path for many new missions to come.' The filmmaker admitted: 'This is a massive responsibility, but also, incredibly exciting for me and a huge honor.' He also went on to thank Bond producers Amy and David, adding they, 'are absolutely thrilled to bring him back to the screen. Thank you to Amazon MGM Studios for their trust'. Amy and David added, 'Denis Villeneuve has been in love with James Bond movies since he was a little boy. 'It was always his dream to make this movie, and now it's ours, too. We are lucky to be in the hands of this extraordinary filmmaker.' After Amazon acquired MGM in 2022, they obtained full creative control of the 007 franchise with a deal they struck with Barbara and Michael, the offspring of original James Bond producer, Albert R. Broccoli. Barbara and Michael had been overseeing the franchise since 1995, when their father ceded control of his Eon Productions company to them. Amazon reached an agreement with Barbara and Michael in March 2025, and while financial terms were not disclosed, it was rumored to be upwards of $1 billion. Villeneuve made his directorial debut in 1998 with August 32nd on Earth, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival that year. He followed that up with Maelstrom (2000), Polytechnique (2009) and Incendies (2010), the latter of which was nominated for Best International Film at the Academy Awards. The filmmaker broke through in Hollywood with 2013's Prisoners, a dark drama starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal. He continued to win acclaim for 2013's Enemy, 2015's Sicario, 2016's Arrival, 2017's Blade Runner 2049 and, most recently, 2021's Dune: Part One and 2024's Dune: Part Two. Speculation has continued to grow over who will be the next big-screen Bond and the Bond franchise also prompted a flurry of guesses as to where they might take the franchise next. Bond has been spoiled with video game adaptations since the 1980s, with early adaptations taking the form of shooting games or text adventures in which players typed in what they wanted the super-spy to do. Amazon bosses are currently said to be considering locations in which to set the much-anticipated new film, which experts predicted is likely to be released at the end of next year or in 2027. The studio announced that Denis Villeneuve - best known for directing Warner Bros.' two-part Dune adaptation - has signed on to direct the untitled film, via Amazon press release Due to a filming ban being imposed in Central London next year, new locations are reportedly being considered - with Liverpool a frontrunner, according to The Sun. An insider told the publication: 'This will no doubt irk Bond purists who already fear Amazon taking over the 007 franchise may lead to them making big changes. 'But Liverpool is a well-known alternative to London for film-makers. 'It has appeared in everything from The Batman to Captain America and Harry Potter movies, doubling up as international cities.' The source added that it doesn't necessarily mean the story will be set in Liverpool - though eagle-eyed Merseysiders will no doubt spot their city centre in the background.
