'You signed this motherf**ker': NHL veteran rips Carolina's $51M splurge on Nikolaj Ehlers over cheaper Jack Roslovic
The Carolina Hurricanes' $51 million signing of Nikolaj Ehlers has sparked serious backlash, with one veteran bluntly questioning the move and suggesting Jack Roslovic was the better bargain. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The controversy has reignited debate about Carolina's offseason decisions—and whether they gambled on the wrong Winnipeg Jet. James Wisniewski slams Carolina for massive contract, says Jack Roslovic offered better value The Carolina Hurricanes' six-year, $51 million deal with forward Nikolaj Ehlers has stirred strong reactions, especially from former NHL defenseman James Wisniewski. On the Empty Netters podcast, Wisniewski didn't mince words as he criticized the deal, comparing Ehlers' stats to free agent Jack Roslovic and calling the decision financially reckless. Is Quinn Hughes Tough Enough To Win A Title? w/ James Wisniewski | EP.217 'That Jack Roslovic! Fuing 22 goals? (But) you signed this motherf**ker for 49 million,' he ranted, before correcting the number to $51 million. 'You could probably re-sign Jack Roslovic with 22 goals; he had two more goals.' Ehlers posted 24 goals and 39 assists in 69 games last season—just one point shy of his career best—but missed 13 games. Roslovic, meanwhile, notched 22 goals in fewer minutes and would have likely come at a significantly lower price tag. Wisniewski estimated Roslovic would have accepted '4 years at 4M.' Playoff performance and career consistency favor Ehlers, but was the price right? Despite the heat, there's some logic to the Hurricanes' move. Ehlers has delivered 20+ goals in eight of his 10 NHL seasons—something Roslovic has only done twice. And when it came to the 2025 playoffs, Ehlers shined with five goals in just eight games, while Roslovic managed only one goal in nine. Still, Wisniewski's frustration speaks to a broader debate in NHL circles: should teams invest big in slightly more productive players, or seek budget-friendly deals with comparable upside? Nikolaj Ehlers is excited to join the Hurricanes' playoff-proven core For his part, Ehlers expressed enthusiasm about joining the Hurricanes, a team with consistent postseason success. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now 'Very excited about the team in Carolina,' he said via 'They've been a tough team to play against… I like all the young players that are there, and the interest that Carolina has shown… helped a lot in the decision-making.' But for critics like Wisniewski, the price tag may continue to be a point of contention long after the puck drops.

NHL free agency 2025: Jack Roslovic still unsigned as Toronto Maple Leafs remain in the mix for top forward
Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports Despite the flurry of signings early in the NHL free agency period, forward Jack Roslovic remains one of the few notable names still available on the market. The 28-year-old, who netted 22 goals last season, continues to draw interest, particularly from the Toronto Maple Leafs, who are reportedly among a handful of teams still pursuing the skilled winger as they navigate salary cap challenges. Toronto Maple Leafs still pursuing Jack Roslovic amid NHL free agency buzz and tight salary cap Roslovic, a former first-round pick of the Winnipeg Jets, split time last season between the Columbus Blue Jackets, Carolina Hurricanes, and briefly, the New York Rangers. His offensive production and top-six upside have kept him on the radar of several NHL clubs, with Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman recently confirming on 32 Thoughts: The Podcast that five to six teams remain interested, including the Maple Leafs. While Roslovic is believed to be seeking the right fit both financially and structurally, Toronto's interest remains steady. However, Friedman noted that the Leafs are 'trying to move money around,' suggesting the team needs to clear cap space before making a formal offer. With a forward group already bolstered by recent additions like Dakota Joshua, Nicolas Roy, Matias Maccelli, and Michael Pezzetta, signing Roslovic could push the Leafs to offload veteran contracts, potentially involving David Kampf or Calle Järnkrok. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Legendary Cars from the Past Undo Toronto Maple Leafs roster decisions could shape next move in Jack Roslovic free agency pursuit Toronto's forward depth chart is packed heading into 2025–26, with internal competition heating up. Jack Roslovic, coming off a $2.8 million deal, would require a cap-adjusted contract, but his skill set offers flexibility the Leafs could value, particularly with their need for reliable secondary scoring. Veterans like Kampf, who saw a diminished role last season, and Järnkrok, who struggled with injuries, appear to be logical trade candidates if Toronto wants to fit Roslovic under the cap. Whether GM Brad Treliving chooses to make a roster-shaping move may determine how serious the Leafs' pursuit ultimately is. As the NHL offseason enters its quietest stretch, Jack Roslovic remains a valuable option on the open market. With teams like Toronto still interested but limited by cap constraints, any potential signing will likely hinge on additional roster movement, setting up a possible late-summer shake-up. Three Potential NHL Landing Spots For UFA Jack Roslovic
Jack Roslovic is arguably the NHL's best UFA still looking for his next contract. While he has yet to sign with his new team, there is no question this should change before the 2025-26 season is here. Teams still looking for more offense should be calling, as the Columbus, Ohio, native has provided solid secondary scoring throughout his career. This past season, he had 22 goals and 39 points in 81 games with the Carolina Hurricanes. In 2021-22 with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Roslovic had a career-high 22 goals and 45 points, then followed it up with 11 goals, 33 assists and 44 points the year afterward. Let's look at three NHL teams that could be good landing spots for Roslovic, who can play at center or on the right wing. Vancouver Canucks It is no secret the Vancouver Canucks need help at the center position after Pius Suter left the club and signed with the St. Louis Blues this off-season. With Roslovic being one of the top centers left on the free-agent market, Evgeny Kuznetsov being the other, he would make a lot of sense for a Canucks team looking to bounce back after this past season's playoff miss. So it's no surprise that the Canucks have talked to Roslovic's camp, according to CHEK-TV's Rick Dhaliwal. If the Canucks signed Roslovic, he would give them an upgrade for their third-line center spot, at a minimum. However, he would also give them another option down the middle for their second line if Filip Chytil isn't the solution there. In either scenario, the Canucks' center depth would improve with a Roslovic addition. The Canucks are also in a decent position to add to their roster. They have a little over $3 million of cap space to work with. They should be able to afford bringing in a depth forward like Roslovic on a short-term deal. Toronto Maple Leafs The Toronto Maple Leafs are another club that has been viewed as a possible suitor for Roslovic this off-season. Their center depth is locked up with Auston Matthews, John Tavares, Nicolas Roy and Scott Laughton, but Roslovic can play right wing. The Leafs lost right winger Mitch Marner this off-season, and although they acquired Matias Maccelli to play on the right side potentially, Roslovic gives them another option. Roslovic would offer them another solid forward to consider for their top nine and power play. Due to his versatility, he can move up and down the lineup and remain effective. This past season, he played on the top line with Sebastian Aho and either Andrei Svechnikov or Seth Jarvis, but he also played with Jesperi Kotkaniemi, Taylor Hall, Eric Robinson and others, according to Considering the Maple Leafs had 70 forward line combinations that played at least 10 minutes this past season, it's possible that Roslovic could try to set up John Tavares or former USA Hockey National Team Development Program teammate Auston Matthews on one night or be a depth shooter with Roy or Laughton another night. Like the Canucks, the Maple Leafs also have some money left to work with, as they have just under $3 million of cap space available. This could be enough to land Roslovic, especially with free agency opening a month ago now. New Jersey Devils The New Jersey Devils added to their forward depth this off-season by bringing in Connor Brown and Evgenii Dadonov, but they could still use an upgrade at their third-line center spot after trading Erik Haula to the Nashville Predators. Bringing in Roslovic would provide them with just that. Even if the Devils decide to put Dawson Mercer at center, which they did at times this past season, Roslovic could compete with Arseny Gritsyuk and Paul Cotter for a spot on the wing in the bottom six. However, the Devils still need to re-sign top RFA Luke Hughes this summer, and they have about $6.13 million in cap space. Given how important a player Hughes is to their roster in the short and long term, getting him signed to his new contract is their top priority. Yet, the possibility of Roslovic joining the Devils should not be ruled out, especially if they free up some of their cap space by trading another player. Ultimately, with the Devils finishing 20th in the NHL in goals-for in 2024-25, Roslovic would be a nice pickup for them. They could be a dark horse to watch. Bruins Should Boost Offense By Signing Top Free Agent
With it now being August, there are not too many notable unrestricted free agents (UFAs) left. While this is the case, there are still a few solid players available for the taking who could be good for the Boston Bruins to bring in. Forward Jack Roslovic is undoubtedly one of them. Roslovic has shown throughout his career that he is capable of providing strong secondary offensive production, and there is no question that the Bruins need more of that. While the Original Six club boosted their bottom six this off-season, bringing in a player like Roslovic would have the potential to give them more offense in their middle six. Due to his versatility, Roslovic is able to play both center and right wing. Thus, if the Bruins signed him, they would have several options to consider with him in their lineup. He slot nicely on either their second or third right wing, but also could be a strong fit as their third-line center. Furthermore, due to his offensive skill, he would also be a clear option for their power play. Roslovic spent this past season with the Carolina Hurricanes, where he posted 22 goals and recorded 39 points in 81 games. He has also recorded at least 44 points two times in his career, so he has the ability to provide solid offense when playing at his best. Overall, on a short-term deal, Roslovic could be a good player for the Bruins to take a shot on. It will be interesting to see if they pursue him from here. Bruins Need Bounce-Back Season From Key Forward The Boston Bruins are hoping to put together a far better season in 2025-26 than they did this past campaign. However, for this to have a real chance of occurring, they will need some of their key players to have bounce-back years. Photo Credit: © Marc DesRosiers-Imagn Images

Vancouver Canucks interested in free agent forward Jack Roslovic despite tight NHL cap space
James Guillory-Imagn Images The Vancouver Canucks continue to explore roster upgrades this offseason and have turned their attention to free agent forward Jack Roslovic. According to reports, the team has engaged in multiple conversations with the 28-year-old, signaling ongoing interest despite having limited financial flexibility. Roslovic, who spent last season with the Carolina Hurricanes, is seeking a mid-range deal in a competitive free agent market. Vancouver Canucks exploring Jack Roslovic signing despite tight NHL salary cap space Roslovic tallied 39 points in 81 games with Carolina during the 2024–25 season, contributing solid production in a middle-six role. He is believed to be looking for a two or three year contract worth just north of $3 million annually. That price point puts pressure on Vancouver, who have just over $3.2 million in cap space left for the remainder of the offseason. The Canucks see Roslovic as a potential solution at third-line center, a role they've yet to firmly address this summer. However, signing him would likely use up most of their remaining cap space, which makes the decision a delicate one. Vancouver must weigh whether Roslovic's skill set justifies tying up their remaining financial resources. Canucks weigh Jack Roslovic's roster fit against NHL cap flexibility concerns While Roslovic has shown flashes of offensive upside and is regarded as a dependable depth scorer, he's not widely viewed as a player who can push a team into true contender status. That's where the debate lies for the Canucks, should they spend nearly all of their cap room on a player who may not dramatically shift their playoff trajectory? Some believe the Canucks should hold out for a more impactful addition or keep their options open for in-season flexibility. Others argue that Roslovic, with his speed and positional versatility, is exactly the kind of under-the-radar value-add teams need late in the summer. As Vancouver continues to fine-tune its roster, Jack Roslovic remains on their radar. Whether or not the two sides can come to terms likely hinges on contract length and value. The Canucks are clearly interested, the question is whether Roslovic is the right piece at the right price. FAQs: 1. Which NHL teams has Jack Roslovic played for? He has played for the Winnipeg Jets, Columbus Blue Jackets, New York Rangers, and Carolina Hurricanes. 2. Where is Jack Roslovic from? He is from Columbus, Ohio, USA.
