Netflix's Dept Q star had an ordinary job before landing life-changing role
Netflix star Alexej Manvelov who plays Akram in the streaming platforms latest thrilled Dept Q had a very normal job before coming into the spotlight. Netflix's Dept Q has quickly become a fan favourite, captivating viewers with its thrilling storyline and standout performances. While lead star Matthew Goode has earned widespread praise for his portrayal of troubled detective Carl Mørck, viewers have also been quick to praise his co-star, Alexej Manvelov, who plays Akram, hailing him as a scene stealer. The 43-year-old Swedish actor plays Akram, Detective Mørck's mysterious 'assistant'. A former member of the Syrian police, Akram is relentless in his pursuit of justice to uncover the truth. Alexej's portrayal of Akram has taken viewers by storm and they can't seem to get enough of him. Despite his growing fame and impressive appearances in Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan and the hit HBO show Chernobyl, his path to stardom was far from traditional. Before becoming a professional actor the star spent nearly a decade working in the construction industry - although he always wanted to be an actor. According to the Swedish publication Aftonbladet, Alexej worked as a sheet metal technician for eight years after relocating to Stockholm to chase his acting dreams. While holding down the physically demanding job, he got involved with several independent theatre groups and attended auditions whenever possible. His determination paid off, as he eventually went on to star in various Swedish productions including the thriller Before We Die and Stockholm Requiem. His breakthrough came with his portrayal of Garo in Chernobyl, which opened doors to international projects. In 2023 he went on to star as Alexei Petrov in Jack Ryan, before landing the role in Dept Q. Speaking to Netflix's Tudum, Matthew Goode praised the cast that writer and director Scott Frank assembled. He said: "Scott Frank assembled one of the finest casts I've ever gotten to work with. It's just an incredible playpen for an actor." "Leah Byrne is a stone-cold star. I felt like I've known Jamie [Sives] for a long time, we just get on so well… Alexej [Manvelov] is joy, pure joy, capital J," he continued. Dept Q is a gripping crime series revolving around the brilliant, but flawed, detective Carl Mørck, who is given a cold case assignment after being badly injured following a mysterious attack that left his partner paralysed and a young police officer dead. The show is based on the hit novels by Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen and has nine episodes, which dive into the cold case and explores the truth behind Mørck's attack. Speaking about the plot, Matthew said: "When we join the story, a 16-year-old case up in Aberdeen has been solved. The optics of that look really good, because right now they're lacking finance and crime figures are going up. "So Kate Dickie's character - the boss of the police force - her higher-ups say, 'Let's form a cold case unit.' She puts Carl in charge because she can keep an eye on him in the basement." All episodes of Dept Q are available to watch on Netflix now.

Offaly manager's emotional interview after Leinster win as he creates new word
Offaly denied Louth an unprecedented clean sweep of Leinster titles at senior, U20 and minor level as they defeated the Wee County in the Monday's minor decider. The Faithful County trailed by four points with three minutes of normal time to play, but ran out winners by 2-20 to 3-14 in the end after an incredible final few minutes as goalkeeper Jack Ryan converted two long-range stoppage time frees. Offaly manager Roger Ryan hailed his side's 'Offalyness' as he gave an emotional interview to TG4 after the game. He said: "It's unbelievable. I said to you before the game, if we took this to ten minutes to go, we'd win. And I knew, even when Louth got the penalty, I knew these boys have character and Offalyness you can't buy. "I'm so proud of them, so proud of every one of them. I'm so proud of their parents, their clubs. It's a massive day for Offaly. "89 (the last time Offaly won a Leinster minor title). Two players out in the field dad's played the last time. "I'm emotional now, I'm just, I'm ecstatic for every football person in our county. We soldiered on without winning a whole lot. I'm on a rant now, but it's just so, so great. "The last time we won something in football was under 20. It was during Covid. There wasn't excitement because of the restricted crowds and all that. "People are busting themselves day in, day out for Offaly football. For them out there tonight, it's just unbelievable." Expanding on his use of the term 'Offalyness', Ryan added: "Offalyness is a word. It's one that's in our dressing room. It was wrote down on a piece of paper at the start of the year. We met as a management team, 1st of September and I wrote a word called Offalyness on it. "The boys looked at me and they knew what it meant and that's what we want to try and instil in these young men."

Late two-pointers lead Offaly to first Leinster minor football title in 36 years
Leinster MFC final: Offaly 2-20 Louth 3-14 After losing their opening two Leinster Minor Football Championship games this season, it looked as if Offaly were destined to exit the competition with a whimper. Now, remarkably, they are provincial champions at the grade for the first time since 1989, goalkeeper Jack Ryan proving the unlikely match-winner with two stoppage time two-point scores to seal the landmark win. The Faithful were considerable underdogs beforehand and trailed by four points with three minutes of normal time remaining in Newbridge. It looked at that stage like Louth would secure all three of Leinster football's flagship titles having already taken the senior and under-20 crowns. READ MORE But Offaly, who Louth had beaten by nine points in their group last month, refused to relent and produced a thrilling final few minutes to prevail. Offaly celebrate with the Fr Larry Murray Trophy. Photograph: Morgan Treacy/Inpho Offaly outscored Louth by 0-8 to 0-1 in the closing minutes with Ryan's first two-pointer, in the 62nd minute, putting them a point ahead before his second, in the 65th minute, stretched the gap to three. Ryan fired over four two-pointers in total, all from long-range frees, as Roger Ryan's side impressively finished the game with three two-pointers in a row. Eamon Maher scored Louth's other late two-pointer as they dominated the possession in the concluding minutes. Free-taker Tony Furey topped the scoring for Offaly with 1-6, while Dylan Dunne blasted the early goal that kept them in the game despite a strong first half from Louth. Johnny Clerkin's Louth led by 0-11 to 1-6 at half-time, 0-8 of which came from star forward Connell Kelly. Kelly finished with 0-9 but still ended up on the losing side despite three second-half goals from Oisin Reidy, Jack Martin and Cillian McQuillan. Offaly's Patrick Duffy celebrates after the final whistle. Photograph: Morgan Treacy/Inpho Martin's 37th-minute goal left Louth five ahead and they were still four clear when McQuillan hit the net from a penalty in the 52nd minute, 3-13 to 2-12. Sewer repairs causing traffic nightmare on side streets on Chicago's North Side
"Road Closed" barriers on the North Side are causing huge headaches for some people living in the Edgewater neighborhood in Chicago. Part of Ridge Road has been closed for work on the sewer underneath, so instead some drivers are choosing to head down side streets like Ardmore Avenue, and neighbors have sounded the alarm. Because of road closures in the area, side streets like Ardmore have become as busy as main streets, and homeowners aren't happy. Jack Ryan has captured several videos of what he calls a traffic nightmare on Ardmore Avenue since Monday in Edgewater. "We've had CTA buses coming down Ardmore Avenue. That's never happened. I've lived here, you know, for 15 years," he said. "You've got people who are frustrated as they're driving, because they're not moving quickly. They don't know why they're stuck in traffic, so they're laying on their horns. They're yelling out their windows." A $9 million sewer replacement project has Ridge Road closed between Ardmore and Glenwood to help prevent flooding in the area. Crews put up detour signs, but the problem is drivers aren't following the posted detours, and instead are using side streets like the one in front of Ryan's house. Especially with Senn High School on Ardmore, Ryan said there's a safety concern for students and people riding bikes. Ryan said, before school begins and when it lets out, the traffic gets even worse. "We've got scooters and bicycles up and down the sidewalks that we've never had before, and they're flying, because that's just what they do," he said. Ryan said he understands the need for the water main replacement project. "I'm a fan, a proponent of the work that they're doing. I just don't think they put enough planning into it. School will be out of session in the next few weeks, and that would have decreased the level of congestion significantly had it waited until then," he said. "This initial phase of construction is supposed to last a total of four weeks. It just started Monday, so this is day four. We all know in Chicago this could go on for quite some time." Ald. Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth (48th) said she's working with the Chicago Police Department and Chicago Department of Transportation to evaluate the existing detour signs and traffic patterns. "Because what's happening is people are going through one ways the wrong way, or they're speeding down alleys, and this is … very concerning," she said. With safety in mind, Manaa-Hoppenworth is asking people to use Foster and Devon as alternates to get to DuSable Lake Shore drive. The CTA said buses that had been detoured along Ardmore have now been rerouted.
