The Story Behind Jackie Kennedy's Cartier Watch: A Royal Gift With ‘Traces and Clues of Her Life' Revealed

The V&A's latest fashion exhibit showcases the iconic, world-renowned jewelry brand Cartier, and among its dazzling display of diamonds is a timepiece steeped in history: the Cartier watch once owned by Jackie Kennedy. According to Sunita Kumar Nair, author of 'CBK: Carolyn Bessette Kennedy: A Life in Fashion,' this display is particularly meaningful: 'This is an incredible moment, for the general public to see a historical timepiece from the Kennedy legacy, particularly Jackie's,' Kumar Nair said. 'It wasn't included for public eyes until now, which is an excellent example of how she still remains an important part of our cultural legacy and how there are still parts of her life yet to be unravelled.' Season Three Premiere This storied accessory has journeyed through the ages. Its significance dates back to 1963, when President John F. Kennedy launched a fitness initiative, challenging the population to walk 50 miles, hoping to inspire Americans to become more active. Jackie's brother-in-law, Prince Stanislaw 'Stas' Radziwill, who was married to her sister, took part in the trek. Jackie intermittently joined the walk, offering support and encouragement along the way. In commemoration of the experience, Stas gave her the Cartier watch. The memory of that day was preserved with a heartfelt inscription engraved on the back: 'Stas to Jackie / 23 Feb. 63 / 2:05 AM to 9:35 PM,' in script. In a tragic turn of events, six months after this, President Kennedy was assassinated, leaving Jackie a widow. As reported by Nair, the next time the widow was seen in public, she was with her daughter Caroline skiing in Sun Valley, a glimpse of the watch face captured. 'She served the American people as first lady, and she respected the boundaries and messages that certain pieces of fashion and jewelry meant to the general public and her husband's presidency,' Kumar Nair explained, 'it felt like the watch was a signifier of her new life, a private citizen free to wear what she wanted, and a flag of her social status and life as a widow.' After that, the ex-first lady was rarely seen without it and it became a staple for her, making it a well-loved accessory. After her death in 1994, Sotheby's held a sale of her belongings, which did not include her watch. It wasn't until 2017 that Christie's announced a sale of the watch. An unidentified bidder won the accessory for $379,500, which was later revealed to be Kim Kardashian. The story now continues as the watch takes its new home at the V&A. 'Jackie was so private, and we are still left with traces and clues of her life. There is something to be said about keeping parts of your life private, particularly when you are serving a public life,' Kumar Nair noted. This is the shoe everyone was wearing the year you were born, from 70s wedges to 00s UGGs

Shoe trends come and go – and then come back again. It's called the circle of life, baby, and it's a fact that fashion is cyclical. There's no better indication of this than looking back through the years at the shoes everyone was wearing. Take loafers, for example. They were all the rage in 1957 before being overshadowed by boots in the early '60s, only to come back into fashion in 1976, as worn by Goldie Hawn. The same is true for pumps, slides, platforms, clogs, peep-toes, and, yes, even UGGs. No prizes for guessing which era the immediately recognisable sheepskin shoes were on trend... We're just thankful that comfy trainers are so in right now. To see the last 65+ years in footwear, scroll through to see all the vintage shoe trends (featuring some famous faces from Jackie Kennedy to EmRata, all but confirming that year's 'It' shoe), plus what shoes everyone was wearing the year you were born!

Best Photos of Jackie Kennedy Kids Caroline JFK Jr. Over The Years

Over the course of more than 20 years, Jackie Kennedy has been remembered as a First Lady, a history and culture preservationist, and a fashion icon. But one epitaph we sometimes neglect to remember is her quiet resilience as a mother to Caroline and John F. Kennedy Jr. The 35th First Lady of the United States was thrust into the public eye in the late '50s and early '60s as the wife of an up-and-coming politician, John F. Kennedy, who would go on to become the 35th President of the United States. During her time as First Lady and after her husband's assassination, Jackie Kennedy was completely devoted to raising the couple's two children. Throughout their time in the White House, the Kennedys made a number of idyllic memories, a number of which were captured by photographers. There were some incredibly happy times, including family holidays, while also times of great loss and grief (including the couple's loss of their third child, Patrick, at only two days old). But in the Kennedy White House, known as the mythical age of Camelot, and beyond, Jackie Kennedy's role as a mother and her motherhood played out in the public eye. Over the course of several years, some of the most touching photos of Jackie were captured, and with this slideshow, we've gathered some of the very best with her children. Take a look at these archival images, chronicling years from Jackie Kennedy and her children's lives. A version of this article was originally published in July 2021. During their holiday in Ireland in 1967, Jackie took her children horseback riding, which is an activity all of them adored. This snapshot from 1962 shows the super-sweet relationship between Jackie and her children, Caroline and John Jr. Caroline Kennedy adored riding her pony named Macaroni, which is a hobby she clearly took after from her horseback riding mother. They were also photographed riding together, like in this picture of Jackie holding on to John and Caroline right beside her. The family would go on a lot of vacations together, including this one where they skied and shopped in Vail. They also skied together in 1964, as seen in this sweet pic of Jackie adjusting John's snow boots. In this sweet pic, Jackie is seen teaching John how to ski. Honestly, their kids looked like twins in this adorable family photo taken at their family home in Hyannis Port, Mass. Everyone in the Kennedy family adored their family dogs. Over time, they had dogs like Charlie, a Welsh Terrier; a dog named Pushinka, their puppies; Clipper, a German Shepherd; and more. Jackie was beaming with pride when Caroline Kennedy christened the aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy on May 27, 1967. Jackie Kennedy remarked that the time in the White House with her husband and their children was 'the happiest time.' Per JFK Library, she said: 'It was really the happiest time of my life. It was when we were the closest– I didn't realize the physical closeness of having his office . . . in the same building and seeing him so many times a day.' Jackie Kennedy, in a white, short-sleeved jacket, walks daughter Caroline down the sidewalk near Central Park in New York on her way to school. In this shot, Jackie is a mom like any other, reading a book to Caroline to keep her entertained. In 1962, Jackie and her daughter had this sweet moment when she visited her daughter's school for the day. Nothing is more fun than messing with your mom's hair, right? Ryan Murphy's American Love Story Now Has Its Jackie Kennedy and JFK Jr.—and the Choices May Surprise You

It might be hard to remember now in the cursed age of RFK Jr., but there was a time when Camelot and all that it encompassed loomed so large in the American cultural imagination that it was near-impossible to think of any mere mortal actress portraying Jackie Kennedy onscreen. Granted, several actresses have done just that over the past few decades, including Natalie Portman, Minka Kelly, and Jodi Balfour…but am I an idiot for being somewhat shocked that the performer tapped to bring the famously raven-haired Jackie O. to life in Ryan Murphy's new American Love Story series is none other than Naomi Watts, a true blonde? Though, I guess hair dye exists! As do wigs! As does creative license! Jackie Onassis in 1980 Naomi Watts in March 2025 This, of course, isn't the first bit of casting news out of the American Love Story universe; The Wilds star Sarah Pidgeon was confirmed to be playing Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy back in March. But now, not only do we know that Watts will play her tragedy-stricken mother-in-law, but that relative newcomer Paul Kelly will take the role of Bessette-Kennedy's husband. The American Love Story team apparently reviewed auditions from over a thousand actors over the course of six months to find their John F. Kennedy Jr., but clearly, Kelly's smoldering appeal resonated with them. While Watts may not look exactly like Jackie Kennedy in her natural state, it's worth asking: who cares? This is, after all, an actress with two Oscar nominations under her belt, and she's already shared the screen with Pidgeon in the 2024 film The Friend, so it's a pretty safe bet that she'll wow us with her interpretation of arguably the most lore-steeped first lady in American history. (Also, lest we forget: She just played another famous brunette, Babe Paley!) We don't have a release date yet for American Love Story (although we know it's likely due out some time this year, if IMDB is to be believed), but it's safe to say I was seated even before this casting news and remain even more so now.

Eleanor Lambert, The Woman Who Created the MET Gala

Upon entering the fashion world, she discovered that American fashion was in its infancy compared to European fashion (New York was nothing compared to Paris), so she decided to put together a list of "best dressed" candidates. To add validity to her list, she put it up to a vote by department store creatives, editors from the most relevant fashion media and the most recognised agencies. The list left out the greatest Hollywood actresses and European royalty, but included heiresses and wives of some of the wealthiest individuals in the United States - a very exclusive selection that exuded sophistication. The result? A New York Times headline confirming that Eleanor Lambert was succeeding: 'The world has a new international centre of fashion.' Little by little, some Hollywood actresses began to make the list and, years later, it included a name that would gain great prominence: Jackie Kennedy. If you've ever wondered who turned John F. Kennedy's wife into a style icon, now you know. When did the MET Gala begin? The first gala benefiting the Metropolitan Museum's Met Costume Institute was held in 1948 by Eleanor Lambert. Eleanor Lambert was the very powerful woman who started the event that always gives us the best red carpet moments of the year. Some called her the queen of PR, others the empress of fashion. How did the MET Gala begin? The MET Gala was inaugurated in 1948, its original name being 'Gala of the Year,' with the intention of bringing fashion to museums. The event was created to raise funds to benefit the preservation and exhibition of fashion history through the Costume Institute, formerly the Museum of Costume Art, an independent entity founded in 1937. Although the MET Gala is now held every first Monday in May, the first Gala of the Year was organised as a midnight dinner in the fall and was not held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Over the course of the following decades, its venue would move from Rockefeller Centre's Rainbow Room to the Waldorf Astoria. Eleanor Lambert had another pivotal moment in her career: she founded the CFDA. Yes, the renowned Council of Fashion Designers of America wouldn't exist if it wasn't for her. The council had a single goal: to support and nurture emerging talent. It was under the umbrella of this new project that the MET Gala was born. At the same time, Eleanor Lambert decided to make her Best Dressed List more official by forming a committee whose members were appointed to choose the names that would become part of what became the International Best Dressed List (and, later, the CFDA Awards). Lambert maintained control of the list until 2003, when, at the age of 99, she decided to hand over the responsibility to Vanity Fair , which continues to publish the list to this day. Thank you, Eleanor Lambert, for giving us the best red carpet of the year: the MET Gala. Article originally published on Vogue Mexico
