Apple teases 'Slow Horses' season 5 first look and a 'Ted Lasso' star joins the cast

Are we about to get a "Slow Horses" season 5 and "Ted Lasso" crossover episode? Probably not, but Apple did just announce that one member of the AFC Richmond team will be a guest star in the upcoming season of the hit Apple TV Plus British spy thriller. In a press release, the tech giant's streaming service revealed that Nick Mohammed will be joining "Slow Horses" season 5 in an unknown guest starring role. This came alongside a release date announcement that confirmed a Wednesday, September 24 release date for season 5. I'm very curious to see what role Mohammed will play in the upcoming season of what's frankly been the best show on TV over the past several years. In "Ted Lasso," he showed the ability to play the good guy and the villain, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him go in either direction. Whatever role he plays, though, it'll likely only be a brief appearance. That doesn't mean it won't be impactful, but the fact that he's listed as a "special guest star" indicates it won't be a regular role this season — though he could feature in future installments. A recent example of this is Kaitlyn Dever in "The Last of Us" season 2, who was a guest star and made a huge impact on the show, but only appeared in a handful of scenes across three episodes. Yet, Dever will play a bigger role in "The Last of Us" season 3. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Alongside the release date and casting announcement, we also got a first look at Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb in season 5. Lamb will, unsurprisingly, lead "Slow Horses" season 5, which is an adaptation of Mick Herron's fifth novel in the "Slough House" series, "London Rules." Apple's official synopsis reads: "In season 5 of 'Slow Horses,' everyone is suspicious when resident tech nerd Roddy Ho has a glamorous new girlfriend, but when a series of increasingly bizarre events occur across the city, it falls to the Slow Horses to work out how everything is connected. After all, Jackson Lamb knows that in the world of espionage, 'London Rules' should always apply." Malcolm has been with Tom's Guide since 2022, and has been covering the latest in streaming shows and movies since 2023. He's not one to shy away from a hot take, including that "John Wick" is one of the four greatest films ever made. Here's what he's been watching lately:

‘Slow Horses' season 5 has an official release date – and a first look at Jackson Lamb

MI5's finest – well, -ish – are back. An Apple TV+ show that only gets better and better, Slow Horses is returning for a fifth run this autumn. September 24 is the date to earmark for the return of Gary Oldman's schlebby spymaster Jackson Lamb and his band of misfit heroes at Slough House. The first two episodes will launch on that day, with the final four to follow once a week every Wednesday until October 22. Season five is adapted from Mick Herron's 2018 Slough House novel London Rules and sees Ted Lasso star Nick Mohammed join the ensemble as an ambitious mayoral candidate. 'In season five, everyone is suspicious when resident tech nerd Roddy Ho has a glamorous new girlfriend, but when a series of increasingly bizarre events occur across the city, it falls to the Slow Horses to work out how everything is connected,' runs the official synopsis. 'After all, Lamb knows that in the world of espionage, the London Rules – cover your back – always apply.' Clocking back in for another shift under the critical eye of Jackson Lamb are Jack Lowden's once fast-tracked agent River Cartwright, Saskia Reeves as long-suffering Slough House stalwart Catherine Standish, Rosalind Eleazar as recovering coke addict Louisa Guy, and Christopher Chung as obnoxious hacker/IT whiz Roddy Ho. Kristin Scott Thomas is back as scheming MI5 deputy director general Diana Taverner and James Callis is the hapless agency head she has wrapped around her little finger. Jonathan Pryce is back as River's ex-spy dad David Cartwright. Expect more grimily realistic London locations, more blackly comic twists and byzantine espionage scheming as Lamb and his Slough House acolytes butt up against the slick technocrats of MI5 and a variety of other nefarious forces. ‘Slow Horses' Season 5 Gets A Release Date And First-Look Images

Slow Horses Season 5 Apple's hit spy series Slow Horses is returning with a fifth season and not a moment too soon. One of the best shows on the streaming service, Slow Horses follows a ragtag group of reject spies as they solve cases that MI5 just can't crack, all while defying danger at every turn. Gary Oldman plays the acerbic Jackson Lamb, the odoriferous chief of Slough House where MI5 agents who just can't cut it – or who are being punished for one reason or another – are sent. Under his wing are agents River Cartwright (Jack Lowden), Louisa Guy (Rosalind Eleazar), Catherine Standish (Saskia Reeves), Roddy Ho (Christopher Chung), Shirley Dander (Almee-Ffion Edwards), and J.K. Coe (Tom Brooke). A number of former agents have died in the line of duty in previous seasons. Kristin Scott Thomas plays MI5 Deputy Director General, Diana Taverner. Jonathan Pryce plays River's grandfather, David Cartwright. The series is as intense as it is hilarious. It's easily the best-written, most tightly-paced spy show on TV at the moment. The good news is we don't have long to wait for Season 5 which comes out on September 24th. The first two episodes will air that Wednesday, with weekly releases following for the next four weeks. That's the bad news: As is the case with so many shows out of the UK – and all previous seasons of Slow Horses – Season 5 will have just six episodes. Despite every season being just about perfect, I always want more. The series has already been renewed for a sixth season, and Oldman has said he's happy to keep making more in perpetuity. Will Smith (not that Will Smith) created and produces the series. Saul Metztein returns to direct the fifth season. Here are some first-look images from Season 5: Diana Taverner and Jackson Lamb Slow Horses Newcomer Nick Mohammed of Ted Lasso fame joins the cast as politician Zafar Jaffrey: Slow Horses The most intriguing images for Season 5 all involve Slough House's cockiest and most obnoxious agent, Ruddy Ho, who seems to have found a potential love interest. Slow Horses At least, he seems to be having a good time. This is raising quite a few red flags as far as I'm concerned. Slow Horses And here's Ruddy with a sword – or, more likely, a toy sword: Slow Horses Here's the Slough House gang with some healthy snacks: Slow Horses There's no new trailer at this time, but you can watch the original teaser for Season 5 below. It includes a mysterious kiss between River Cartwright and Louisa Guy, though we all know those two would never be a romantic item: The fifth season's logline reads: 'In season five of 'Slow Horses,' everyone is suspicious when resident tech nerd Roddy Ho has a glamorous new girlfriend, but when a series of increasingly bizarre events occur across the city, it falls to the Slow Horses to work out how everything is connected. After all, Lamb knows that in the world of espionage, the London Rules - cover your back - always apply.'

M15 delves into the history of spying in new London exhibition

LONDON, April 2 (Reuters) - Britain's spy agency MI5 is revealing some secrets. In collaboration with host The National Archives and prepared over several years by the agency's own archivists, "MI5: Official Secrets" is giving the public the chance to see equipment and methods used by the real life James Bond and his colleagues over the agency's 115-year history. Ken McCallum, director general of MI5, said the agency wanted to be more transparent. While TV fiction showed the dramatic side to spying, real intelligence work was about "ordinary human beings together doing extraordinary things", he said at an event on Tuesday launching the exhibition. One of the featured items is a 110-year-old lemon, used as evidence against German spy Karl Muller, who was executed in 1915 at the Tower of London. Muller used lemon juice to write secret messages during World War One. The display also includes confessions and surveillance reports relating to Britain's most notorious double agents, who spied for the Soviet Union between the 1930s and 1950s and were known as the "Cambridge Five". "The reality of our work is often different from fiction - whether that fiction is George Smiley or Jackson Lamb," said McCallum. Author John le Carré's George Smiley works for overseas intelligence agency MI6, dubbed "The Circus" by le Carré, while grumpy Jackson Lamb appears in TV show "Slow Horses," depicting a team of failed agents. The exhibition opens on Saturday at The National Archives in southwest London and runs to September.
