Canadiens Farm Team Drops Game One

The AHL Eastern Conference Final got underway Wednesday night at Place Bell, and the Charlotte Checkers dominated the Laval Rocket, at least on the scoreboard, winning 5-1. The Montreal Canadiens' farm team had not played the Florida Panthers' farm team since 2018, and they'll need to adapt in a hurry if they don't want to see the series slip between their fingers. Following the Rocket's morning skate, it looked like Jacob Fowler would be getting the start since he was the first goaltender off the ice, but when the puck dropped on game one, Cayden Primeau was between the posts. Unfortunately for the veteran, he wasn't in the same superb form he had in the divisional final, and he surrendered four goals in just 19 shots for a mediocre .789 save percentage. Charlotte scored twice on its first three shots. Advertisement Former Canadiens Player Chooses Switzerland Could The Canadiens' Second-Line Centre Be In New York? Canadiens: The Grades Are In – Joel Armia Meanwhile, the Rocket took 31 shots on Checkers netminder Kaapo Kahkonen, but Oliver Kapanen was the only one who got a puck past him. It wasn't for lack of trying. Pascal Vincent's men got their opportunities, especially since the Checkers were far from being disciplined, getting seven penalties before things got ugly. Both teams were assessed tons of penalties with just over two minutes left in the game. It was a tough night at the office for veterans Alex Barre-Boulet and Laurent Dauphin, the pair who lead the Rocket in points with 10 and nine points, respectively. They finished the night with a minus-four rating and struggled to find lanes to the opponent's net. The Rocket will need to turn over a new leaf in a hurry since game two is set for Thursday night. Vincent's team would do well to be ready from puck drop since the Checkers scored early in each period on Wednesday. They scored within two minutes of the start of the first and second frames and 31 seconds into the final frame. Advertisement Jacob Fowler should be back in the net tonight, as it's the second part of the back-to-back. Additionally, Vincent hasn't said he'd move away from the alternation system he put into place since Primeau returned from the NHL once the Canadiens were eliminated. Game two will be a must-win affair for Laval, as games three through five will be played in Charlotte. Losing both home games to start the series would put the Rocket in a tricky situation, to say the least. Game two is set for 7:00 PM and will be broadcast on RDS. Amerks Eliminated By Laval In Five Games

The Rochester Americans hoped to build off the momentum of a 5-1 victory in Game 4 against the Laval Rocket on Friday in a fifth and deciding game, but the Amerks fell behind early and could not catch up to the North Division champs, losing 5-0 at Place Bell on Sunday. After taking advantage of rookie Jacob Fowler and scoring four goals on 14 shots in Game 4, Rochester was stymied by Rocket goalie Cayden Primeau, who is following up an impressive regular season (21-2-2, 1.96 GAA, .927 save %) with three wins against the Amerks. Devon Levi made 29 saves in the loss. Other Sabres Stories Is Peterka In Prime Position For Big Payday? Incredible season, 50 wins. We forced it to a game five. They were just better tonight. There's no other way to put it. They did a really good job on our top guys….They were just better in every facet. They were just really good tonight. We had no answer. They just kept coming.' In the list of impressive performers for Rochester, defenseman Kale Clague led the club in scoring with 11 points (5 goals, 6 assists), Isak Rosen tied with Clague for the club lead in goals with five, and rookie Konsta Helenius had six points in eight games. In the disappointing category, Noah Ostlund had only 2 assists in the playoffs. Follow Michael on X, Instagram, and Bluesky @MikeInBuffalo

Canadiens Farm Team Drops Game Four After Jacob Fowler Falters

Pascal Vincent had made it clear before the start of the third round that he fully intended to alternate his goaltenders, and while Cayden Primeau had a great game on Wednesday night for the Laval Rocket, it was Jacob Fowler who led them onto the ice on Friday night. The move is understandable from a developmental standpoint. After all, Fowler is the Montreal Canadiens' goaltender for the future, but it can be tricky to mix development and results. We got a prime example on Friday night. Could The Canadiens Poach A Maple Leaf In Free Agency?Canadiens: The Wedding Season Is Upon UsFormer Canadiens Win Gagarin Cup With Primeau riding the pine, Fowler gave up four goals on 14 shots before he was pulled from the game, but Vincent stood by his decision to give him the nod: You can't develop solely when it suits you. We have to see our young players. It's in games like these that we need to see them. Fowler joined us to play hockey. I am comfortable with the decision. [To play Fowler on Friday night] - Those four goals might not have been a death blow for the Rocket if Devon Levi had played like he had since the start of the third round, but unfortunately for Fowler and co., it was the real Levi who turned up between the pipes of the Rochester Americans last night. He saved 22 of the 23 shots he received, with Laval's sole tally coming off a rebound that Joshua Roy only had to tap in. The Amerks don't owe the win to Levi, though. Josh Dunne had the game of his life, scoring four points in the 5-1 victory. The 26-year-old centerman was undrafted and started his pro career with the Columbus Blue Jackets organization. He mainly played for the Cleveland Monsters for four seasons before joining the Buffalo Sabres' farm team last offseason. His two goals and two assists on the night give him seven points in as many games since the playoffs started. Meanwhile, Fowler wasn't the only one to have a tough night. Logan Mailloux, who has been very good since the start of the playoffs, was in the box for two of the Americans' goals, a costly lack of discipline, and he committed a turnover that led to another goal. Like it or not, Mailloux is still young, and off nights are just part of the development process, growing pains as they call them. With the series now tied at two games apiece, the fifth and final game will take place at Place Bell on Sunday afternoon. The 4:30 PM tilt will be a winner-takes-all battle that promises to be entertaining. Primeau will be back in the net in accordance with the alternating system, and it will be his chance to show that he can be clutch when it matters. Rochester Americans stave off elimination with 5-1 win over Rocket

If Jacob Fowler didn't realize it before, he certainly does now. Article content The Laval Rocket rookie goaltender no longer is at Boston College, playing against boys. Fowler now is in professional hockey, and the 20-year-old received his baptism by fire Friday night against the Rochester Americans. Article content Fowler allowed four goals on 14 shots in barely more than 39 minutes and was replaced by veteran Cayden Primeau. But the damage was already done and the hole too precipitous for the Rocket to overcome. Article content Article content Rochester breezed to a 5-1 victory before 10,243 Place Bell spectators to stave off elimination. The best-of-five North Division final is tied 2-2 heading into Sunday afternoon's (4:30 p.m.) fifth and deciding game. Article content Article content One-game, winner-take-all with both teams' seasons on the line. What more could one expect, or hope for, from the top two clubs in the division. Article content 'They come into our barn and put on that kind of performance against us in front of our fans,' forward Owen Beck said. 'We're both in the same position with our backs against the wall. We have to come back and remember tonight and use that to fuel us for Sunday.' Article content Josh Dunne scored two goals for Rochester while adding two assists. Isak Rosen, Tyson Kozak and Konsta Helenius also scored. Two of the Americans' goals came on the power play while the visitors' final goal, by Helenius, came with the team shorthanded. Article content Article content Joshua Roy scored Laval's only goal — his second in as many games — at 7:45 of the second period, narrowing the deficit to 3-1. But Dunne's second goal came only 1:37 later, defusing any momentum the Rocket might have gained. Article content This was the eighth time in two seasons Rochester has faced an elimination game, and it improved to 6-2. The Americans now have won their last four road elimination contests. Article content Rochester goalie Devon Levi uncharacteristically had allowed 12 goals in the series' opening three games. This marked the first time the Dollard-des-Ormeaux native had allowed three or more goals in three successive AHL contests. And while Levi was 1-6 with an .841 save percentage against Laval heading into the match, he was virtually flawless on this night while stopping 22 shots.

Goalie Cayden Primeau happy to be back with Canadiens

Article content 'He's exceptional,' Primeau said. 'He gets the best out of his players. You know where he stands. He doesn't play mind games. He's a straight shooter. The guys love playing for him and the success that team has had shows that.' Primeau's future remains uncertain since he can become a restricted free agent on July 1 and the Rocket now have Jacob Fowler, who won the Mike Richter Award as the best goalie in NCAA Division 1 this season after posting a 25-7-2 record with a 1.63 GAA and a .940 save percentage at Boston College. In his first three games with the Rocket, Fowler has a 2-1-0 record with a 2.32 GAA and a .914 save percentage. Primeau said he can be inspired by Washington goalie Charlie Lindgren, who used to be his partner in Laval. Lindgren left the Canadiens as a free agent four years ago and the 31-year-old signed a three-year, US$9-million contract extension with the Capitals in March. 'I just wanted to play,' Primeau said about his time in Laval. 'That was the biggest thing. I didn't really have to prove anything. I just wanted to have fun playing and play as much as possible.'
