K'taka Deputy CM to meet PM Modi over Maharashtra govt's objections to Alamatti dam height

'I will seek time from PM and the Jal Shakti Minister once CM Siddaramaiah writes a reply to the objection raised by the Maharashtra CM,' he told reporters here. This follows Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis' recent letter to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, expressing concern that raising the height of the dam could lead to flooding in Maharashtra's Sangli and Kolhapur districts. Bengaluru, Jun 3 (PTI) Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Tuesday said he would seek a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil to discuss the objections raised by the Maharashtra government to raising the height of Alamatti dam. He also said CM Siddaramaiah will respond to Maharashtra CM's letter within two days. 'I have already shared my inputs with the CM. We will also share CM's letter with all the MPs so that they can take it up in the Parliament. We will seek an appointment with the PM after that. It is important that all of us safeguard state's interests in unison,' he said in a statement issued by his office. Shivakumar said Maharashtra CM Fadnavis is an intelligent person, who had supported the project in the past. 'I am surprised he (Fadnavis) wrote this letter now. Managing floods within a state is the responsibility of the state governments,' he added. Meanwhile, Shivakumar inspected the venue for Kempe Gowda Jayanthi celebrations on Magadi road here. 'We have decided to celebrate this year's Kempe Gowda Jayanthi at this venue. The land allotted to Kempe Gowda Development Authority is nearby. We will lay the foundation stone for the Kempe Gowda Development Authority on June 27 and celebrate his Jayanthi. In the allotted land, a museum on Kempe Gowda will also come up,' he added. Outlining details of the celebrations, he explained, 'Our local leaders have suggested swapping the allotted land with the land of Social Welfare Department as it also has an auditorium. A railway line will also pass through it and a station would be built here. This will be taken up in the Cabinet meeting.' Asked if the land was too far from the city, he replied, 'Bengaluru has expanded now, where else can we allot the land? No one is willing to part with Golf course and Race Course.' The Karnataka government will seek time with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil to discuss the issue of the Almatti reservoir across the Krishna in view of the objection raised by the Maharashtra government over raising the dam's height. 'After Chief Minister Siddaramaiah responds to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis's letter, I will seek time from the Prime Minister and the Jal Shakti Minister,' Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar told presspersons here on Tuesday. In the next two days, Mr. Siddaramaiah is expected to reply to the objection from the Maharashtra Chief Minister, he said here, after inspecting the venue where Kempe Gowda Jayanti is to be held this year. Mr. Shivakumar said, 'We will also share the Chief Minister's letter with all the members of Parliament [from the State] so that they can take it up in the House. Asked if the land was too far from the city, he said, 'Bengaluru has grown now, where else can we allot the land? No one is willing to part with the golf course and racecourse.'

Centre launches nationwide rural sanitation survey to assess impact of Swachh Bharat Mission

NEW DELHI: The Union Government has launched a nationwide rural sanitation survey aimed at providing a national ranking for all States, Union Territories, and Districts of India. Union Minister of Jal Shakti, C R Patil, inaugurated the Swachh Survekshan Grameen (SSG) 2025. He stated that the survey will measure the impact of India's flagship cleanliness programs, Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM). The survey will rigorously assess the current state of rural sanitation, focusing on sustaining the outcomes achieved under the Open Defecation Free (ODF) Plus Model, as established by the Swachh Bharat Mission-Gramin (SBM-G). The assessment will include sampling village evaluations, surveying households and public places to gauge their status based on various cleanliness parameters. This includes the functionality of Plastic Waste Management Units (PWMU), Faecal Sludge Management (FSM) plants, GOBARdhan plants, citizen feedback, and Swachhata Green Leaf Rating (SGLR) sites. During the event, Patil emphasised to all States the importance of maintaining cleanliness, stating that it is not a one-time goal but a continuous journey. He urged States and Union Territories to share their innovations and best practices under the schemes. 'As we work towards a Viksit Bharat, sanitation must remain a sustained, people-led effort powered by true Jan Bhagidari,' he said.

Minister reviews water projects, stresses timely execution

Gorakhpur: Jal Shakti Minister Swatantra Dev Singh on Monday chaired a review meeting with officials concerned to assess the progress of key water-related projects. At the meeting that focused on Jal Jeevan Mission, Namami Gange, flood control, rural piped water schemes, and revival of traditional water sources, Singh emphasized time-bound execution and warned against any negligence, especially in delivering clean drinking water to every household. He urged officials to conduct on-ground inspections and ensure quality implementation, stating, "Schemes must reflect on the ground, not just in files." He called for the revival of rivers, ponds, and traditional water bodies and stressed making water awareness a public movement through the 'Amrit Sarovar' and 'Boond-Boond Se Jal' campaigns. Directing early flood preparedness, he asked for identification of vulnerable areas and relief planning by June. Reviewing progress under Jal Jeevan Mission, Singh noted improvements but called for more speed. He insisted on immediate action to cover areas not having tap connections and sought greater coordination with public representatives. He also emphasized activating local monitoring committees and spreading awareness via social media. Singh warned of strict action against lapses and added that CM Yogi Adityanath is personally reviewing the mission's progress.

Andhra CM seeks Centre's support for Polavaram-Banakacherla project, rooftop solar scheme

'Had a productive meeting,' Naidu, a key ally of the NDA, said in a post on X after meeting Sitharaman. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief met Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, New and Renewable Energy Minister Prahlad Joshi, Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil and Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh to discuss various state government's projects. New Delhi, May 23 (PTI) Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Friday met several Union ministers, including Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and sought the Centre's support for the state's renewable energy initiatives, the Polavaram–Banakacherla project and a defence manufacturing hub proposal. The chief minister — who is in the national capital to attend the 10th Governing Council meeting of the Niti Aayog to be held on May 24 — said he discussed in detail the crucial Polavaram-Banakacherla project, which is aimed at taking surplus Godavari waters to the drought-hit regions of the state. 'Powered by Centre-State collaboration, this river linking initiative will ensure water access and long-term development for our people,' he tweeted. The chief minister said the project would benefit millions in drought-hit areas and serve as a model for river-linking across India. The state government has proposed a detailed financing building on earlier discussions with the Finance Ministry. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) is expected by June 2025, he said and requested for better coordination between concerned departments to fast-track the project. Before meeting Sitharaman, Naidu discussed the Polavaram-Banakacherla Link Project with the Jal Shakti Minister and explained the significance of the project for enhancing water security in drought-affected areas of Andhra Pradesh. He informed that the proposed project aims to divert surplus Godavari floodwater to the drought-affected areas through a three-part water transfer system, including the Bollapalle reservoir, lift irrigation systems, and tunnels through the Nallamala hills. Naidu said the project supports national missions like Jal Jeevan, Blue Revolution, and Make in India while highlighting Andhra Pradesh's rightful access to surplus water as a downstream state after bifurcation, according to a statement. 'The Polavaram-Banakacherla initiative focuses on sustainable solutions to support irrigation, drinking water, and regional growth. Sought the Centre's full support to take this forward under our long-term vision for #SwarnaAndhra2047,' Naidu said in a post on X. Assuring that a detailed project report (DPR) would be submitted soon, Naidu requested timely approval for the project, the statement said. In his meeting with the Defence Minister, Naidu presented a strategic vision to position Andhra Pradesh as a national hub for defence manufacturing and aerospace innovation, an official statement said. The proposals include the development of integrated defence facilities, the revival of critical manufacturing units, support for indigenous aviation programmes, the establishment of testing and training centres, and the creation of thematic defence hubs, it added. 'We discussed a comprehensive roadmap for Andhra Pradesh to emerge as a cornerstone of India's defence and aerospace future. ….Grateful for his encouraging response and assurance of full support,' the chief minister said in another post on X. Naidu also underlined the state's readiness — with its strong infrastructure base, skilled workforce, and proactive policy environment — to play a leading role in advancing the Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission through self-reliant defence production and innovation, the statement said. In his meeting with the Union New and Renewable Energy Minister, Naidu requested the allocation of rooftop solar capacity under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana and urged expediting approval of the proposals submitted by state electricity distribution companies (DISCOMs) in January. 'Had a fruitful meeting… With the Centre's support, we will reduce energy costs, empower our people, and lead India's clean energy transition,' Naidu wrote on X. The chief minister has set a target of installing 20 lakh rooftop solar units by 2025. Under the scheme, SC/ST households will receive free rooftop solar systems, while backward caste households will get Rs 10,000 per kWp subsidy for up to 2kWp installations. The state's Clean Energy Policy 2024-29 targets an additional 72.6 GW of renewable energy, including 40 GW of solar power. In a meeting with the Union Minister of State for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Naidu sought support to transform the state into a pivotal hub for space manufacturing and innovation. The proposal outlines the development of two state-supported Space Cities — one near the ISRO SHAR spaceport and another near Lepakshi — to serve as integrated hubs for satellite production, launch vehicle development, and industry collaboration. He also apprised the Union Minister of the appointment of S Somanath, former ISRO Chairman, as the Honorary Adviser on Space Technology to the Government of Andhra Pradesh. Union Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu and TDP MP Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu were present during the meetings. PTI LUX BAL BAL This report is auto-generated from PTI news service.
