Western Bulldogs coach's blunt take on troubled star's future
Western Bulldogs assistant coach Brendon Lade has shared a rather blunt take on the future of troubled star Jamarra Ugle-Hagan. The 23-year-old hasn't played since the 2024 elimination final and has spent considerable time away from the club this season. Despite his return, Ugle-Hagan missed more training sessions as he dealt with family issues. It was that fresh setback that left Lade stating the forward would be lucky to crack into the VFL side. ' (Ugle-Hagan) still rocks up (to training) … he's had a few things going on with his family the last week or so – we haven't seen him as much the last couple of weeks,' Lade told 3AW on Sunday. 'Prior to that though, he was at every session and really putting his name up to play in the VFL and hopefully get back to some good footy before the year's end. 'But at the moment, he's probably put himself back a couple more weeks, and the way the VFL (team) is playing at the moment, he might be lucky to get a game.' The comments from the Dogs assistant coach caused a divide with North premiership player David King and Port Adelaide premiership player Kane Cornes. 'There's levels you can go to as an assistant coach and I think this is outside the brief,' King said on SEN's Fireball. 'I'm not sure that's what you want. I'm not sure you'd want your assistant coach saying, 'I'm not sure he'd get a game'. 'They've thrown everything around this guy to support him. The last thing (you'd say).' Cornes however felt differently to King and backed up the remarks which sparked a debate between the pair. Cornes: 'Maybe they've had enough?' King: 'Just have enough privately. You don't air that.' Cornes: 'I liked it.' King: 'Oh, you did not.' Cornes: 'Maybe they're just sick of it. Maybe they've tried everything and now they've almost got to get to the point of humiliation to actually realise…' King: 'He's not going to be there, so what's the point of clipping him in Round 22? Just let it slide, man. 'I don't think that is part of the assistant coach's brief. It's a bad reflection.' Cornes: 'He's usually a big supporter of players, he's a champion of players and listening to that I think he's had enough.' King: 'I don't care what he is or what he was, right now he got that wrong. 'Stay in your lane, Ladey.' King: 'No! Not his job. If 'Bevo' said it, no problem. If someone up the chain of the C-suite said it, no problem at all. 'Not an assistant coach's job. Just stay in your lane.'

Western Bulldogs star Jamarra Ugle-Hagan opens up on how he is conquering his mental health battles
There is renewed hope that Jamarra Ugle-Hagan could return to the AFL in the near future after the Western Bulldogs star opened up on his mental health struggles - and how he is battling them. Ugle-Hagan, 23, has not played for the Bulldogs since early March 2025, with the club citing mental health reasons. On March 16, during a Bulldogs match, he was allegedly spotted at a Melbourne pub instead of attending, prompting public criticism from Essendon great James Hird. By late March, speculation surged on fan forums after 65 pages of posts detailed rumours about his absence and commitment. In July, his ex-girlfriend Liv Kelly - who had lived with him since 2022 - posted a cryptic TikTok about 'staying silent to protect someone,' sparking intense debate. She followed up with comments such as 'We love a narcissist,' which many fans interpreted as aimed at Ugle-Hagan. On June 10, Ugle-Hagan revealed on the Rip Through It podcast that he had checked into a northern NSW health retreat after suffering suicidal thoughts and giving his car to a mate so he couldn't drive. He admitted his passion for footy had faded, filling the gap with drinking and socialising with friends. Rumours of him moving to Geelong intensified in late July after he was tagged in an Instagram photo taken in the Cats' dressing room on match day. Despite the noise, he returned to Bulldogs training in early August, saying he wanted to stay and win a premiership. Now he made a rare public appearance and declared that he was back in love with the game, working on himself in a bid to return to the AFL arena. 'Mentally I'm getting better,' Ugle-Hagan told News Corp. 'I'm journalling every morning as soon as I wake up. 'I feel like that is more in my interest now to get me through this tough time. 'I love training myself and putting myself through something I can get better in. It is an easier way for me.' Ugle-Hagan, currently single, says spending time with supportive friends helps keep his mental health on track. On Thursday night, he stepped outside his comfort zone to attend the Melbourne International Film Festival gala at Hoyts Melbourne Central. He later mingled at the lavish State Library after-party, chatting with MIFF board member and actor Tony Briggs. Ugle-Hagan attended as the guest of actor Kylah Day, a recent Logie nominee for most popular new talent. Also spending time with friend and content creator Brooke Blurton, he said they are part of a close-knit support group. 'I've had some things go on this year and it has been challenging. But the fact that I can show up to events like this makes me feel a lot better,' he said. 'It is good to get out other than just football. Socialising is a really massive thing and just distracts yourself from, I don't know, just natural life, your wellbeing. 'It is a distraction and embraces who you are.' 'I've got a support team. A family I've created in Melbourne and bonded with and that's why it is so hard to definitely fall off now.

See the heart-stopping moment AFL star's car is used in string of alleged violent robberies that saw man attacked with a machete
A Jeep registered to Western Bulldogs star Jamarra Ugle-Hagan has been involved in an alleged violent crime spree. The vehicle was driven to several shops in Melbourne's south-east on July 19, where a gang armed with machetes allegedly entered venues at Keysborough, Cheltenham and Dingley Village between 7.30pm and 8.50pm, stealing cash and cigarettes. At 9pm, CCTV captured the alleged offenders brandishing a machete as they accosted a shop attendant and customers at a Braeside petrol station. The staff member armed himself with a metal pole and bravely tried to fight back, before he was violently thrown to the ground. Victoria Police confirmed the group then fled in the Cherokee and were soon spotted a short time later in Chelsea. A pursuit followed, with stop sticks deployed in Doveton, but the car continued driving on its rims before it was later dumped in Collingwood. The four occupants then ran from scene, police said. Western Bulldogs star Ugle-Hagan, 23, was later questioned by police and cleared of any wrongdoing. The AFL club are aware of the incidents - and remain satisfied Ugle-Hagan is not involved. At the time of Saturday's armed robberies, the footy star's car was not reported as stolen. The Jeep Cherokee is now in the hands of police. In June, another vehicle reportedly owned by Ugle-Hagan - a Toyota utility - was involved in a separate drive-by shooting. Multiple shots were fired at Doug Lee, 71, at his Glen Iris home in a case of mistaken identity. Meanwhile, Ugle-Hagan's playing future is unknown as he endures ongoing mental health and personal issues. The full forward has been previously been linked to a move to the Sydney Swans, but he recently suggested a move interstate is unlikely. 'I still want to play for them (Bulldogs) and win a flag,' Ugle-Hagan said. 'It's the Bulldogs until my contract runs out (2026) and then hopefully they offer me another one, but we will see how we go. 'They have given me opportunities since day dot.'

Troubled AFL star Jamarra Ugle-Hagan's car allegedly used in Melbourne drive-by
Troubled footy star Jamarra Ugle-Hagan has been questioned by police after the Western Bulldogs forward's car was allegedly used in a drive-by shooting in Melbourne. The 23-year-old has been cleared of any wrongdoing after 71-year-old grandfather Doug Lee was ambushed after returning to his home in Glen Iris, around 10km southeast of the Melbourne CBD. FOX FOOTY, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every match of every round in the 2025 Toyota AFL Premiership Season LIVE in 4K, with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Channel 9 has reported police are investigating and trying to ascertain who was driving Ugle-Hagan's 4WD vehicle after a number of shots were fired towards Lee on June 11. It's understood no charges have been laid over the shooting to date. is not suggesting Ugle-Hagan was involved in the shooting or any criminal activity. Ugle-Hagan is yet to play a game this season for the Bulldogs, taking time away from the club earlier in the year to deal with some highly publicised mental health issues. The former No. 1 AFL draft pick conceded on the Rip Through It podcast late last month he 'had to give his car to a mate so he couldn't drive it, I just didn't trust myself driving'. It has now allegedly been used in a crime and it left Lee understandably shocked when the incident took place. 'Atrocious. Atrocious,' Lee told Channel 9. 'I heard a shot, which was quite surprising. 'Looked up and saw a car approaching me very rapidly. 'I steeled myself for the collision and as they passed me, they fired two more shots.' Lee added that he felt the incident was likely a case of mistaken identity. 'Obviously very lucky. The size of the hole, I'm glad it didn't hit me,' he said. 'I'm fairly sure they weren't targeting me. Just maybe aggression, maybe arrogance.' Nine crime reporter Gillian Lantouris read a statement from the Bulldogs that stated the AFL club was aware of the incident and was 'satisfied Jamarra was not involved'. 'I understand (the Bulldogs) have been aware of this incident for quite some time,' Lantouris said. 'They have issued a statement – 'The club is satisfied that Jamarra was not involved in the incident and that he had not been in possession of the vehicle for some time before it occurred. Jamarra has fully co-operated with the subsequent police investigation'.' Incredibly, it is the second time one of Ugle-Hagan's vehicles has been in the spotlight in recent weeks. On June 23, the young forward reported on social media that what is understood to be a different car, a Toyota Ute, had been stolen, posting a photo of the vehicle. Ugle-Hagan spent considerable time away from the Bulldogs earlier this season and also attended a health retreat in northern NSW. He had returned to training at the club in recent weeks, but coach Luke Beveridge said late last month there is no timetable for Ugle-Hagan to return to the playing arena.
