Rio Ferdinand's son signs first professional contract with Brighton

Rio Ferdinand's son Lorenz has signed his first professional contract with Brighton & Hove Albion. The 18-year-old goalkeeper is the eldest son of the former England central defender, who won the Premier League title six times with Manchester United. Ferdinand junior has steadily progressed since joining Brighton as an under-13 player. Advertisement He made his debut for the under-21's in Premier League 2 in January and his senior debut for seventh-tier Havant and Waterlooville in April, watched by his father. He kept two clean sheets in six unbeaten appearances during a work experience loan towards the end of last season with the Southern League side. Brighton have a strong record in developing young goalkeepers. James Beadle, signed from Charlton in 2022, has joined Championship side Birmingham City on loan for the coming season after helping England under-21's to win the European Championships in Slovakia last month. Carl Rushworth, on Brighton's books since signing from his home town team Halifax in 2019, has also represented England under-21's. Ferdinand is among 13 academy products awarded their first professional deals by Brighton. A three-year contract for versatile attacker Harry Howell was revealed by The Athletic earlier this month. The 17-year-old England junior international became Brighton's youngest Premier League player at 17 years and 29 days old when he went on as a late substitute against Liverpool at the Amex Stadium in May. Freddie Simmonds is also in the group of teenagers to be given professional contracts. The 17-year-old central defender, who has captained England's under-16's and under-17's, made the bench for the 2-2 draw in the Premier League at home to Leicester in April. Howell and Simmonds are among five local youngsters developed from a young age through Brighton's Lancing-based academy based who featured in matchday squads last season, spearheaded by first team regular and England under-21 international Jack Hinshelwood.
