Popular Love Song Revealed As Creepy Stalker Anthem
Let me set the scene for you. It's 2005, wide belts, layered tanks, and bohemian jewelry are in. And no matter how much you tried to avoid it, you couldn't turn on the radio, TRL, or walk into a Wet Seal without hearing this one song: "You're Beautiful" by James Blunt. The hit song is the third single from James's debut album Back to Bedlam. It was nominated for three Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. But I wasn't exaggerating about its popularity. Along with topping charts and music lists, "You're Beautiful" was being played everywhere! In fact, James eventually apologized for how much people were being exposed to it — in 2014, James said the song 'was force-fed down people's throats' and that 'it became annoying.' Well, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the single's worldwide release, James thanked fans for what they helped the song become. He also shared the meaning behind those notable lyrics. "20 years ago today, I released a song that bought me this house," James said in a video post on X (better known as Twitter). "Whoever thought a song about being high as a kite on drugs, stalking someone else's girlfriend would resonate quite so much? Thank you. You guys are beautiful." STALKING?! What in the world?! Sir, I thought this was a song about having an instant spark with a stranger, and not being able to get them out of your head, after realizing you'll probably never run into them again. So, I immediately headed to Google to see if I missed something in the lyrics. "You're Beautiful" starts like this: that last line — "I've got a plan" — is sounding a little suspicious, but I promise, the lyrics didn't turn creepy or anything after that. After the chorus plays, the next few lines go as follows: Yeah, I was a young teen when this song came out, and I can guarantee you, stalking was the last thing I thought this was about. James Blunt reveals REAL meaning behind 'You're Beautiful' on 20th Anniversary
Two decades after its release, James Blunt has finally revealed the real meaning behind his iconic ballad 'You're Beautiful'. In a video posted on Friday, the British singer marked the song's 20th anniversary by candidly admitting that the track, long perceived to be a romantic ballad, actually had a different interpretation all along. 'Twenty years ago today, I released a song that bought me this house,' Blunt says in the video. He continued, 'Whoever thought a song about being high as a kite on drugs, stalking someone else's girlfriend, would resonate quite so much?' Blunt concluded the clip saying, 'Thank you' to his fans, adding, 'You guys are beautiful.' Reacting to his candid and hilarious revelation, a fan commented, "It's the most beautiful stalking song ever made, just edging out Every Breath You Take by The Police.." Another said, "I didn't realise it was a song about stalking. However, after viewing this rather strange video, I get it." Still another reflected on the clip and said, "I tell you what, I've always believed music's at its finest when it's telling a story, no matter how twisted or unconventional that story might be. And if that story can resonate with people, make them feel something, even if it's just a little bit uncomfortable, well then, that's a success in my book." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Did You Know Luxury Hotel Prices in 2025 Could Be So Low? James Blunt Reveals What His Hit 'You're Beautiful' Is 'Really' About as Song Turns 20
James Blunt is celebrating the 20th anniversary of "You're Beautiful" The singer is looking back on the song about an ex-girlfriend and how it changed the trajectory of his career "You're Beautiful" hit number one across 10 countries in an explosive release James Blunt is celebrating 20 years of "You're Beautiful." Marking the milestone on X, Blunt expressed his gratitude at the staying power of the hit song, which was released on May 30, 2005. He wrote, "20 years ago today, I released a song that bought me this house. Whoever thought a song about being high as a kite on drugs, stalking someone else's girlfriend would resonate quite so much? Thank you. You guys are beautiful." "You're Beautiful" was the third single released from Blunt's album, Back to Bedlam, first released in October 2004. It ended up hitting number one across 10 countries in an explosive release that made it one of the songs of the year. Blunt has never commented on who, in particular, the song is about, though there were rumors after the song's release that it was about Dixie Chassay. At the time, Chassay was best known as part of the casting team for Harry Potter & The Prisoner of Azkaban, learning under the tutelage of casting director Jina Jay. It was mentioned in a 2006 profile of Chassay that the song is about her, though she has never commented on it directly. The singer did give some insight into how the song came to be in a 2020 essay for The Guardian. "One day I was on the underground in London and saw an ex-girlfriend with her new boyfriend. Our eyes met, but we just walked past each other, and I went home and wrote the words to 'You're Beautiful' in two minutes," he wrote. "I went to see my songwriter friend Sacha Skarbek in Los Angeles, and, with Amanda Ghost as a co-writer, we finished the song. It's always been portrayed as romantic, but it's actually a bit creepy. It's about a guy (me) who's high and stalking someone else's girlfriend on the subway. But everyone has those moments where you wonder: 'What if I'd said something?' " Blunt recalls playing the song at SXSW, the beginning of a huge shift that came when Linda Perry expressed interest in signing him. "The label asked me to remove the words 'f— high' from 'You're Beautiful,'" he recalls."I tried 'particularly high,' 'especially high!' Eventually I sang 'flying high' on the radio edit but wanted the released version left as it was. I told them, 'I was f— high!' " Blunt added, "The song has a false start. I sing 'my life is brilliant' twice, which is my little joke, but I think in my elated state, from whatever concoction I might have taken at the time, life did seem really brilliant. The tube certainly looked very colorful." Looking back with the knowledge that it propelled his career as a singer and songwriter, Blunt admitted, "I had no idea the song would be such a big hit, and it scared me at first." "I thought I'd just be a musician putting out music. The song [released in 2004] became so ubiquitous that it started to irritate people, but I'm still proud of it and I love my job. I sang it at Elton John and David Furnish's civil ceremony and I'm about to start my sixth world tour. Without 'You're Beautiful,' it'd be a tour of north London." James Blunt hit You're Beautiful is less romantic when you know the real meaning
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'You're beautiful, it's true,' sang James Blunt in his 2005 hit single, seemingly setting the benchmark for love songs with the ultimate romantic declaration. However, 20 years on, the lyrics seem a little less adorable and a bit more… creepy? Today, James, 51, is celebrating two decades since You're Beautiful was released as a single from his debut album, Back to Bedlam. There's no denying the tune changed his life, with the songwriter going on to sell 20million records worldwide, win two Brits, and earn five Grammy nominations. But he remains proud of his somewhat one-hit wonder status, even declaring in his bio on X: 'Proof that one song is all you need.' You're Beautiful reached number one in 13 countries, as listeners were enchanted by its lyrics about forbidden love and longing. While marking its anniversary, though, James has seemingly brought to light the song's true meaning – and let's just say we'll never listen to it in quite the same way now. Taking to social media with a light-hearted video, he said: '20 years ago today, I released a song that bought me this house. 'Whoever thought a song about being high as a kite on drugs, stalking someone else's girlfriend would resonate quite so much?' He signed off to his followers: 'Thank you. You guys are beautiful.' Indeed, we aren't the only ones who failed to pick up on the sinister undertone of the lyrics, but it seems James's fans are more than fine with it. 'Never ever knew that was what it was about! Too funny now I know yet still a great song and, you're very welcome lol', replied @murray_dic32840. @CarlBovisNature branded You're Beautiful 'the most beautiful stalking song ever made', while @rickymakescrap joked: 'Plot twist: The house is next door to that woman.' 'One of the best songs in a generation. Thank YOU!', added @fabianredpath. Lines in the chart-topping anthem that you might hear a little differently now include: 'She smiled at me on the subway / She was with another man,' and, 'I saw your face in a crowded place / And I don't know what to do / 'Cause I'll never be with you.' James also sings: 'And I don't think that I'll see her again / But we shared a moment that will last 'til the end,' and 'There must be an angel with a smile on her face / When she thought up that I should be with you.' Oh, and as for the 'being high as a kite on drugs' thing, who could forget, 'She could see from my face that I was f***ing high,' which was censored to 'flying high' in the radio versions, confusing pretty much everyone. Speaking previously about how the song came about, James told The Guardian: 'One day, I was on the underground in London and saw an ex-girlfriend with her new boyfriend. Our eyes met, but we just walked past each other, and I went home and wrote the words to You're Beautiful in two minutes. 'I went to see my songwriter friend Sacha Skarbek in Los Angeles, and, with Amanda Ghost as a co-writer, we finished the song. 'It's always been portrayed as romantic, but it's actually a bit creepy. It's about a guy (me) who's high and stalking someone else's girlfriend on the subway. But everyone has those moments where you wonder, 'What if I'd said something?'' But you'll be pleased to know that, despite his self-confessed stalking phase, James is now happily married. In 2014, he wed Sofia Wellesley, having met two years prior through his sister. They also have two sons. Speaking about their relationship, James, who is typically a closed book beyond his music, said in 2020: 'I keep my private life private and yet write these deeply personal songs.' Asked at the time whether he understood the pressure Prince Harry felt regarding his marriage to Megan Markle, he added of public interest: 'It can be intense. More Trending 'Everyone in the public eye will face criticism, and it's worth realising that those people are human beings.' In 2023, the Bonfire Heart hitmaker, who also owns West London pub The Fox and Pheasant, continued joking about his big hitter and how it helps him to clear out at closing time. 'I play You're Beautiful at closing time to clear out the locals,' he quipped. 'My pub is the real passion project; it's just amazing.' Never change, James. Got a story? James Blunt reveals famous song he wrote about 'being high as a kite on drugs' and 'stalking someone's girlfriend' bought him a house as he celebrates 20th anniversary
James Blunt revealed the success of his hit song, You're Beautiful, bought him a house in Ibiza as he celebrated the track's 20th anniversary on Instagram on Friday. The 2005 track put the singer, 51, on the map and quickly became a global hit due to its catchy melody - but he joked about the lyrics which include 'being high as a kite on drugs' and 'stalking someone's girlfriend'. James took to Instagram to share a comical video with his fans, thanking them for making the tune such a big hit. In the new clip, James could be seen entering his large living room before making his way towards the camera as the iconic song played in the background. He said: '20 years ago today, I put out this song that bought me this house. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the Daily Mail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. He continued: 'I mean, who would've thought? A song about being high as a kite on drugs and stalking someone else's girlfriend would resonate quite so much. You guys... are beautiful.' Following his post, fans and famous pals flocked to the comment section to compliment the star on his 'great sense of humour' and branded him a 'legend'. One fan wrote: 'You're beautiful James (laughing emoji) can't believe it's 20 years'; 'Genius (laughing emojis)'; 'I bloody love you (laughing emoji) such a great sense of humour.' While Poppy Delevingne commented: 'Hahahahahhahahahahahahaa legend' and Hugo Taylor said: 'It's a nice house.' In 2006, James snapped up the £1.7million property in Ibiza following the success of his number one hit. The hilltop property - surrounded by pine forest - features six bedrooms, a library, sun terrace and an outdoor swimming pool with its own pool house. You're Beautiful has undoubtedly been one of the most adored love songs of the past 20 years. However, the inspiration behind the enduring tune could be described as slightly creepy. Following his post, fans and famous pals flocked to the comment section to compliment the star on his 'great sense of humour' and branded him a 'legend' In 2022, James appeared on The John Bishop Show and revealed the truth behind the beloved ballad - and it's not as romantic as some fans think. When asked what inspired him to write the tune, he confessed: 'It's about me stalking somebody else's girlfriend on the underground while I'm high. James then jokingly added: 'But people play it at their weddings, which is nice.' Upon its release, You're Beautiful made James a household name around the world and the single reached number one in the UK, Canada, Belgium, Norway, the Netherlands, and Italy. Several years ago, James appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show and claimed that the song was about an ex-girlfriend. He told Oprah: 'It's kind of miserable. 'It was about seeing my ex-girlfriend on the Underground in London with her new man, who I didn't know existed. 'She and I caught eyes and lived a lifetime in that moment, but didn't do anything about it and haven't seen each other since.'
