Some singles secretly test dates to dodge ‘gold diggers' — but there are other ways to gauge compatibility
First dates already come with unspoken tests, but one new trend — the so-called 'gold digger test' — is turning dinner into a financial trap, leaving some singles blindsided and offended. Imagine this: You're on a date set up by a mutual friend. You're financially independent, settled in your career, own your home and you aren't looking for someone to complete your life — just someone to add joy to it. Thanks to Jeff Bezos, you can now become a landlord for as little as $100 — and no, you don't have to deal with tenants or fix freezers. Here's how I'm 49 years old and have nothing saved for retirement — what should I do? Don't panic. Here are 5 of the easiest ways you can catch up (and fast) Nervous about the stock market in 2025? Find out how you can access this $1B private real estate fund (with as little as $10) The date starts strong. Conversation flows easily, you bond over your shared love of hiking and weirdly niche documentaries, and for a moment, you think: This might go somewhere. Then the $200 bill arrives, and your date slides it across the table to you. There's no offer to split it, no wallet shuffle — just silence. Confused but not wanting to kill the vibe, you pick up the tab. That's when your date grins and says, 'Congrats, you passed! You're not a gold digger.' Welcome to the latest viral (and dubious) way some singles are trying to weed out dates they think are only in it for the free meal. But is it a smart check for sincerity or just a manipulative money move? Maybe your date doesn't even try to justify the test. Or perhaps they say they've been burned before by someone who only saw them as a walking credit card. But dragging that baggage into a new connection with a 'gold digger test' isn't exactly the healthiest way to start something new. Conversations about money can feel vulnerable, especially if past experiences made you cautious. And yet, it's easy to see where the fear comes from. According to recent data from Experian, nearly 1 in 3 young adults have discovered that their partner made a major financial purchase behind their back. On an episode of Experian's Cost of Loving podcast, James Jones, Head of Consumer Affairs at Experian, talked about how the rise in mistrust between partners raises a concerning issue. 'Whilst joint finances aren't an essential part of a relationship, it's worrying that many people have such a lack of financial confidence in their partner,' he said. 'The only way to create change here is to encourage financial transparency.' Of course, there's a time and place for money talk. First dates can be a good moment for light chats about values, but dropping a financial loyalty test at the table isn't it. If anything, it says more about someone's unhealed wounds than your willingness to cover dinner. Read more: Want an extra $1,300,000 when you retire? Dave Ramsey says — and that 'anyone' can do it Trying to gauge how someone handles money doesn't have to be off the table. Money conversations are a key part of any healthy relationship. According to a LendingTree study, 98% of Americans in exclusive relationships say financial compatibility matters, and 67% say it's very important. Still, that doesn't mean you need to dive into budget spreadsheets over your first round of drinks. Financial expert Ramit Sethi told Moneywise he's not a fan of jumping into finance chat too soon. 'Some people in the financial community encourage talking about money on the first date,' he said. 'I find that a little nerdy. Like, who wants to be on a first date talking about your asset allocation? You know, it's like, get a life.' Instead of starting with the hard numbers, look for the soft signs: how someone spends, saves and thinks about value. If one person prefers fancy dinners out and the other's more into budget-friendly home-cooked meals, talk about how to strike a balance. And be clear about the basics — like who's paying. Whether you take turns, split the bill or each cover certain expenses, agreeing on expectations early can help avoid awkward moments later. If things get serious, it's time to get financially naked. Be open about debt, savings goals or any financial responsibilities you're managing. Transparency builds trust. Sneaky tests? Not so much. Here are 5 'must have' items that Americans (almost) always overpay for — and very quickly regret. How many are hurting you? Former NFL WR says Rams are the 'only team' that closed the gap on the Eagles
Everyone in the NFL is gunning for the Philadelphia Eagles. The defending Super Bowl champions one in convincing fashion and are now the envy of the rest of the league. The Los Angeles Rams had the closest defeat to the Eagles in the postseason during the team's six-point loss in the NFC Divisional Round. And with the 2025 season approaching in the next few months, former NFL receiver and current analyst James Jones thinks L.A. is the only team that actually improved enough to contend with Philadelphia. Advertisement "The only team that I would go with that closed the gap a little bit is the Rams,' Jones said. 'The Rams took the Eagles at home down to the wire. If they pick up a protection, who knows how that game would have went. You have a very good defense about to play together again this year. They'll get better. Then you add Davante Adams to the mix with Puka Nacua and the running game. I think the Rams closed the gap a little bit, and you can go quarterback for quarterback. Matthew Stafford and Jalen Hurts." James' key points make sense: The Rams have a quarterback who is as good if not better than Hurts, L.A. has two stud receivers like Adams and Nacua with a young defense that will continue to improve after coming on strong at the end of the 2024 season. The Rams made the necessary moves to contend with every team in the NFL, including the Eagles. But, one of the more underrated moves included the addition of interior defensive lineman Poona Ford, who's known as a tremendous run-stopper. The Eagles ran all over the Rams in the playoffs, so bringing in an experienced defensive tackle to play alongside Kobie Turner is huge. The Eams even added defensive tackle Ty Hamilton in the fifth round for depth. Advertisement Will all of these moves work? That's why we play the game. But on paper, the Rams look like a formidable opponent to try and unseat the defending champions. Eagles Biggest NFC Threat A Prediction Shocker
No team in the NFL put up more points through a playoff run than the Philadelphia Eagles did last season. Their run as Super Bowl LIX champions was one of the more dominant runs in league history. But just because the team rolled through the NFC doesn't mean they should be expected to do so again. In fact, there's one team almost perfectly made to stop them next season. Advertisement Former Green Bay Packers wide receiver James Jones weighed in on the NFC on FS1's 'The Facility' and said the Los Angeles Rams are the closest team in the conference to knocking off the Eagles. "The only team I would go with that closed the gap a little bit is the Rams," Jones said. "The Rams took the Eagles at home down to the wire. If they had picked up a protection, who knows how that game would have gone. You have a very good defense about to play together again this year. They'll get better, and they have a really young core. "Then you add Davante Adams to the mix with Puka Nacua and the running game. I think the Rams have closed the gap a little bit, and you can go quarterback for quarterback. With Matthew Stafford and Jalen Hurts, they can go at it..." It's a shocking idea to some … but in a way very hard to argue that point from Jones. In their run to the playoffs, their 28-22 win over Los Angeles was the closest victory the team enjoyed. Had Stafford not been sacked by Jalen Carter late in the snow, there's a good chance the Eagles would have been defeated. Advertisement The Rams have bolstered their roster since then. And they remain arguably the most well-equipped team to knock off Philadelphia next season. Rookie GM Brian Gregory says he's ready to rebuild the Suns, touts closeness with owner Mat Ishbia
PHOENIX (AP) — Brian Gregory's basketball resume has plenty of gravitas thanks to nearly two decades as an NCAA Division I head coach at Dayton, Georgia Tech and South Florida. That's not why he's the new general manager of the Phoenix Suns. Instead, it is Gregory's 25-year relationship with Suns owner Mat Ishbia that is the major reason he's making the rare transition from college sidelines to an NBA front office. Some may see that as a negative, but Gregory believes his closeness with Ishbia will be an asset as the Suns embark on a difficult rebuild following one of the most disappointing seasons in franchise history. 'I'm never going to shy away from the fact that one of the reasons I'm sitting up here is because of my relationship with Mat Ishbia,' Gregory said Tuesday. 'But that relationship is founded on our alignment. Shared values. Shared work ethic. We've been through a lot together. 'He trusts me and I trust him.' The 58-year-old Gregory was elevated to the general manager's role with the Suns last week, with former GM James Jones moving into the role of a senior advisor. Oronde Taliaferro was promoted to assistant general manager and Paul Rivers will add basketball operations responsibilities to his role as chief innovation officer. Gregory was an assistant coach at Michigan State from 1999 to 2003, which was the same time that Ishbia was a walk-on guard for the Spartans. Michigan State enjoyed plenty of success during those years, including a national championship in 2000. Now the Ishbia-Gregory pairing will try to recreate that magic for a franchise that has never won a title in its 57-year history despite making the Finals in 1976, 1993 and 2021. The Suns finished last season with a disappointing 36-46 record despite the league's most expensive roster that included the All-Star trio of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal. Booker — a four-time All-Star and franchise icon who has spent all of his 10 seasons in the desert — is the only player who seems certain to return. Gregory's first task this offseason will be hiring a new head coach to replace Mike Budenholzer, who was fired after just one season. It will be the Suns' fourth head coach in four years. After that, it will be time to focus on an expensive but flawed roster. Ishbia said last month he wants future Suns teams to feature 'some grit, some determination, some work ethic, some grind, some joy. We just haven't had that.' Gregory's most valuable trade chip this summer appears to be Durant, who was still one of the NBA's elite scorers last season at 36. The 15-time All-Star averaged 26.6 points on 53% shooting, shows few signs of slowing and will certainly have multiple suitors during the offseason. Beal — a three-time All-Star — could be much more difficult to unload. The oft-injured guard is due more than $50 million next season, but his production hasn't come close to matching the price tag. Gregory said he likes both players, but wasn't ready to comment on their future in the desert. 'I have a very good relationship with both those guys,' Gregory said. 'Kevin gave me a nice hug in the weight room the other night when the news came across Twitter. Had a great dinner with Brad Beal last Thursday and we talked a little about summer plans and different things like that. 'My main focus, to be honest with you, is finding the right head coach for those guys.' Gregory joined the Suns in 2023 and served in several roles, most recently as the vice president of player programming. He had major input in the Suns selecting Ryan Dunn and Oso Ighodaro in last year's draft and both had promising moments during their rookie seasons. Dunn and Ighodaro featured on-court personalities that seem closer to Ishbia's gritty ideals, with the young duo featuring an energy and spirit that was conspicuously lacking from much of the rest of the roster. ___ AP NBA:
