Man City star 'left out of Club World Cup squad' as Man Utd eye transfer

Manchester City have named their Club World Cup squad with youngster James McAtee overlooked in a move that could lead to his exit with Manchester United among those keen Manchester City have opted against including James McAtee in their squad for the Club World Cup as their neighbours Manchester United continue to circle. The snub could prove telling as the academy graduate weighs up his future. City will jet halfway across the world to play in the tournament but won't go with McAtee, who instead has been added to England's pre-tournament training squad ahead of the U21s Euros in Slovakia. ‌ McAtee has enjoyed moments in a City shirt, but is still very much establishing himself. He scored an FA Cup hat-trick several months ago and has also contributed in the Premier League, but won't get the chance to rub shoulders with the squad's senior stars at the FIFA tournament. ‌ As a result potential suitors are beginning to circle and one of those is the Red Devils. Selling direct to the Old Trafford outfit would prove a hugely controversial move, especially as McAtee is tipped to have a bright future. The Daily Mail reports that Guardiola's decision to overlook him could spell the end of his time on the blue side of Manchester. The Catalan has been honest about the state of affairs and whilst he wants to keep the 22-year-old, he would understand his desire to play regularly. He said in April: 'For the age, I'd like him to stay. But I understand players want more minutes. He can play different positions but I don't know how the squad will be and we will see.' ‌ Another factor at play is that McAtee's contract expires in 2026 - leaving the City hierarchy to either hand him a new deal or cash in before he becomes a free agent. The academy graduate has excelled on loan in the Championship previously, but would command a higher move were he to head away from the Etihad. McAtee himself is keen on a move to the Bundesliga, where he's been linked with the likes of Bayer Leverkusen. He's seen first-hand how young English players have thrived in the Germany environment with Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham among them. Letting McAtee leave would represent a risk for Guardiola, who has copped criticism for allowing City's academy products to leave before giving them a proper shot. Several of them have gone on to excel elsewhere, Morgan Rogers among them.

Nottingham Forest close in on Botafogo trio after holding productive talks with Brazilian club

Nottingham Forest have held further productive talks over signing three Botafogo players. Those players are centre-back Jair Cunha, striker Igor Jesus and left-back Cuiabano. Cuiabano was a target for Brighton. Jesus, 24, was wanted by Forest in January. All three played in Sunday's 1-0 with over Santos and Mail Sport expects the deals to be completed following the Club World Cup. Forest attempted to sign Yoane Wissa from Brentford in January and could make another move for him in the summer. Wissa scored 19 non-penalty goals in the Premier League this season, which was level with Erling Halaand and Alexander Isak, and behind only Mohamed Salah 's 20. The arrival of Edu, working across Evangelos Marinakis' clubs, will strengthen ties to the Brazilian market. And that could see Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz become an option, according to Mail Sport's Tom Collomosse. Manchester City playmaker James McAtee, who has had few minutes at the Etihad, is another they admire.

Man City hold further talks over Tijjani Reijnders as they eye £55m deal for AC Milan and Netherlands midfielder

Manchester City have held further talks over a £55million deal for AC Milan midfielder Tijjani Reijnders. The 26-year-old Netherlands international has enhanced his reputation since joining Milan from AZ Alkmaar in 2023, scoring 19 goals in 104 games for the Italian side. City also want Lyon's £30m-rated midfielder Rayan Cherki, who is keen on the move. Cherki, 21, netted in both legs of Lyon's chaotic Europa League quarter-final defeat by Manchester United last month. Should both deals progress, it will cast doubt over a move for Nottingham Forest 's Morgan Gibbs-White. City are in the market for a new midfielder this summer due to the impending departure of club legend Kevin De Bruyne. De Bruyne will end his decade-long stay at the Etihad on June 30 when his current contact expires. Meanwhile, Milan and Forest are among the clubs keen on City starlet James McAtee, as well as Bayer Leverkusen, Frankfurt and Leipzig. McAtee, 22, scored seven goals for City in the season just ended, despite starting in just nine games. City also hold an interest in Wolves left back Rayan Ait-Nouri.

Pep Guardiola vows to walk away from Man City unless one condition is met

Pep Guardiola has claimed he will quit Manchester City if they have such a big squad next season. Guardiola is urging his bosses at the Etihad Stadium to get rid of some players so he has fewer at his disposal next year and he said – albeit in a threat he is unlikely to carry out – that he would resign if he had such a large group again. Advertisement The City manager had to tell Savinho, Abdukodir Khusanov, Claudio Echeverri, Rico Lewis and James McAtee they were not even on the bench for Tuesday's 3-1 win over Bournemouth, just as the two locals were omitted from the matchday 20 for the FA Cup final. Guardiola made four signings in the winter window, after injuries led him to conclude that he had too few players but now he believes he has too many and, while Kevin de Bruyne is guaranteed to leave, the others are all contracted to City next season – leading the manager to say he wants some to go. 'I said to the club I don't want that [a bigger squad],' he explained. 'I don't want to leave five or six players in the freezer. I don't want that. I will quit. 'Make a shorter squad and I will stay. It's impossible for my soul to give my players [a place] in the tribune that they cannot play. Now it happened to add players immediately. Advertisement 'Maybe for three-to-four months we couldn't select 11 players, we didn't have defenders and it was so difficult. After people come back but next season it cannot be like that. 'As a manager I cannot train 24 players and every time I select I have to have four, five or six staying in Manchester at home because they cannot play. This is not going to happen. I said to the club that I don't want that.' Pep Guardiola says he could not bear to leave 'five or six players in the freezer' (PA Wire) Guardiola added that he could not 'sustain for the emotion of the club' to have a squad of that size as he felt the team needed to 'create another connection with each other' in a smaller group, supplemented by academy players. He said: 'It is a question for the club. I don't want to have 24, 25, 26 players when everyone is fit. It is a headache. Yesterday I spent more than 45 minutes with six players. Not one or two, six players were at home. I don't like that.'

Pep Guardiola in club-v-country row with England

Pep Guardiola has become embroiled in another club-v-country row with England after being asked to make James McAtee and Rico Lewis available during the Club World Cup next month. McAtee, 22, and Lewis, 20, were wanted by Lee Carsley for the Under-21 Euros in Slovakia as England look to defend their title, but Guardiola said he would prefer them to travel to America, questioning who would pay the players' wages. Guardiola was previously furious after John Stones returned injured from England duty just before important games for Manchester City last season. He also took aim at England Under-20s this season for sending back Max Alleyne with fitness problems after they 'pushed Max's limits'. He also hit out at the communication between England and clubs after Kyle Walker was injured on international duty. The Under-21 tournament runs simultaneously to the Club World Cup and has priority under Fifa rules. 'I know the manager of the Under-21s asked the club for both players to go to the Under-21s but I don't know the resolution right now,' Guardiola said. 'Normally when players go to the World Cup or European Cup we are already on holidays, so that is why they go and now the situation is here and they have to talk. 'I joke and I am so funny… I don't know who is going to pay the salary in these months, the national teams or the club if they decide they are going to the Under-21s. I don't know who is going to pay it. I would say, the players go with the club. They will talk with the sporting director and they have to decide what they want to do.' Guardiola was speaking before the England Under-21 squad was announced on Friday afternoon, and it does not include McAtee or Lewis. 'Foden is family' Guardiola confirmed Phil Foden will travel to the Club World Cup, which starts on June 18 against Morocco's Wydad SC and will see further group games against Al-Ain and Juventus. Foden has not been selected for England's seniors and says he needs to rest his ankle which has given him problems, while also revealing his off-the-field mental problems this season. 'Phil is family for us,' said Guardiola. 'He's a baby boy from the academy and becoming a star with us. We want to help him, that's the most important thing. 'He needs rest and it's going to happen now after Sunday. Step by step he is going to come back, that is what we want. I just want to help him. I don't care about his performance on the pitch, I want him to feel good and the rest will come in an easy way.' 'Not the Rodri we know' Rodri will also travel to America as he steps up his comeback from a serious knee injury suffered in September. But Guardiola has warned against him playing in every City match next season like he did before he was sidelined. 'We are really pleased he's back, really pleased for the reaction from our people to him,' said Guardiola. 'I am pretty sure he is so pleased for that but he's a long way to be what Rodri was. 'I guess it will be next season when he will start to be the Rodri, not in the way we have seen before the injury playing 70 games, playing every three days, I think it will take even longer for that because the experience in this surgery, we have always to be careful, otherwise you have muscular problems and this kind of stuff. 'But it is the first kind of step, for his mind, for his knee, but still is not the Rodri we know.'
