Horse racing tips: ‘Great mark on her favourite quick ground' – Templegate's NAP to scoot home at Nottingham

TEMPLEGATE takes on Tuesday's racing looking for winners. Back a horse by clicking their odds. CASTRO AURUM (4.02 Nottingham, nap) Made a winning return to action when stepping up to a mile at Bath. Darryll Holland's filly finished her race off well so this extra two furlongs should not be a bother. Her handicap mark of just 73 is more than workable and she can take advantage of that today on the quick ground she loves. GINCIDENT (2.10 Lingfield, nb) Is bang in form and is the pick of these on their form on turf. Trainer James Owen can do little wrong these days and his five-year-old was beaten less than a couple of lengths on his first try at this trip here ten days ago. URBAN SPRAWL (3.40 Lingfield, treble) Put in a fine shift in a tough handicap at York last week. He has winning form here on the all-weather track and this looks a good opportunity. Horse racing tips: Friday, May 9

There are eight meetings across the UK and Ireland on Friday, including the third and final day of Chester's Boodles May Festival, where there are seven races between 1.30pm and 4.45. Ascot (1.50-5.10), Ballinrobe (5.05-8.30), Nottingham (5.15-8.10) and Ripon (5.45-8.35) are the day's other Flat meetings, with jump racing from Market Rasen (2.10-5.00), Downpatrick (4.50-8.17) and Hereford (4.55-7.50). I've picked out three selections, two at Chester (including today's NAP) and one at Ascot. Ron Wood's NAP Sportingsilvermine (Chester, 4.10) @ SP with Betfair Other selections: Brave Mission (Ascot, 1.50) @ SP with Betfair Space Legend (Chester, 2.35) @ SP with Betfair Odds provided by Betfair and correct at the time of writing. If you already have a Betfair account and are looking for a new bookmaker to use for this week's racing, check out more free bets from the best betting sites, reviewed by our experts. 4.10 Chester – Class 4 Apprentice Handicap (1m 4½f) Formerly stabled in Ireland, SPORTINGSILVERMINE (NAP) has improved to win both his starts since joining trainer James Owen. The form of his latest success, gained at Musselburgh last month, is strong. The runner-up won next time out and one of the pair who dead-heated for fourth has won both of his races since. Sportingsilvermine is up 5lb (and due to rise another 1lb given the form is working out), but jockey Mason Paetel, who has had nine winners already this year, takes off 7lb in this apprentice handicap and the horse gets to stay in the same class and ratings' bracket as last time. His claim looks good. 1.50 Ascot – Class 2 Handicap (7f) BRAVE MISSION is a well-bred colt from a good stable and he progressed nicely in three starts last year, finishing his campaign with a novice success at Kempton. He may need to step up to a mile in due course, but this stiff seven furlongs should suit him and he can take this race en route to a tilt at the Britannia Handicap at Royal Ascot next month. 2.35 Chester – Huxley Stakes (Group 2, 1m 2½f) SPACE LEGEND has been off the track since last August, but he returns with his trainer William Haggas in flying form and has the potential to build on an already smart level of ability. He was a bit headstrong at times last year, but may be a calmer model now that he has been gelded. The selection was campaigned at around 1m 4f in 2024, most notably finishing second to the high-class Calandagan in the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot, but his pedigree on his dam's side is pretty speedy and this drop in trip could be just the ticket. Space Legend will be well suited by the quick ground and is drawn to save ground around the tight Roodee circuit.

James Owen's four-year-old was sent off favourite for top juvenile honours at the Cheltenham Festival when finishing third in a thrilling finish behind Poniros and Lulamba and now reverts to the level with connections seeking to take advantage of what they feel is an unexposed Flat rating. Owen – who also saddles Charging Thunder – said: 'He was progressive on the Flat, albeit on galloping tracks, and this is the first time he will run on a tight track. I do think he is a better hurdler than he was on the Flat – he quickly came alive over hurdles – but he could be pretty well handicapped and it looks like he will stay the trip. Trainer James Owen has a strong hand in the Chester Cup (Mike Egerton/PA) 'There's probably not many who have gone from third in a Triumph Hurdle to the Chester Cup but we're hoping he's well handicapped. He's got a good level of fitness from hurdling and hopefully he will run really well.' Davies was in the saddle aboard Zoffee when victorious 12 months ago, igniting jubilant scenes for trainer Hugo Palmer and his landlord Michael Owen at a meeting he holds dear. Apprentice Joe Leavy takes over on the defending champion this year and Palmer is hopeful he can thrive early in the campaign once again. 'He's all set to defend his title and I'm very, very happy with him,' said Palmer. The Zoffee team after victory last year (Mike Egerton/PA) 'We took him to Southwell and he worked very well a few weeks ago. It's nice when they go that far for the first time since last year to have had them on a racecourse, I always think, and we know he goes well fresh. 'The last couple of years his best run of the season has been his first run, so fingers crossed it's the same case again.' No horse heads into the race in better shape than George Scott's Caballo De Mar, who arrives at the Roodee on a five-race winning streak. He easily accounted for a useful cast including Cesarewitch runner-up Manxman (second) and Michael Bell's reopposing Duke Of Oxford (third) at Southwell recently and is backed to continue his fine form. 'We are delighted to get in and it was touch and go, but we ended up getting in comfortably, which was a bit of a surprise,' explained Scott. It's back to back wins in the feature for @CallumSheppy and @GScottracing! Caballo De Mar takes them all the way and quickens up stylishly to score by a distance at @Southwell_Races! — At The Races (@AtTheRaces) April 27, 2025 'He obviously went up 8lb on Tuesday so is effectively 5lb well in, so he has to take his chance. His recent form is on the all-weather, but that is mainly due to how the races have been falling for him, rather than trying to keep him off grass. 'He has gone well tightish left-handed at Southwell, so hopefully the track won't be a problem. The music is going to stop at some point but he looks progressive and everyone can see that. 'It's not very often you get a horse like this into the Chester Cup off this rating, so we feel very lucky. The horse is training well and it's nice to take our chance with a progressive horse.' Joseph O'Brien is double-handed with Curragh scorer Leinster and Dawn Rising, while Andrew Balding will also saddle two – Queen's Prize runner-up Who's Glen and Spirit Mixer. Trainer Andrew Balding is in top form (David Davies/PA) Balding said: 'Who's Glen ran a very good race in the Queen's Prize and he's a course winner, although in very different conditions to those we are likely to see here. I can't see why he wouldn't be effective on fast ground, but it's a question mark the first time he tries it.' Meanwhile, Tom Dascombe is confident Hot Fuss can make his mark providing conditions do not prove too quick for his Cheltenham Festival fourth. He said: 'He's drawn three and that is perfect. If the ground is good we will run him, but if it's really quick we might not, but if he runs I think he will run really well. He wouldn't want too much firm in the description of the going though.'
