James Van Der Beek cast in 'Legally Blonde' prequel 'Elle'

James Van Der Beek is joining the cast of the upcoming " Legally Blonde" prequel " Elle." The " Dawson's Creek" actor's new role in the highly anticipated series was announced Thursday. According to Amazon, he will be playing the city's new mayoral candidate and current school district superintendent, Dean Wilson. Van Der Beek, 48, took to Instagram to share his excitement over the news. "So, this is exciting… I'm going back to work for a bit," he captioned a post. "Super excited to join this awesome cast in such a fun project." He added, "Almost as excited as my wife and girls are that I'm doing this 😍." The new role comes months after Van Der Beek announced he was diagnosed with Stage 3 colorectal cancer. The actor first shared news of his diagnosis on Instagram in November. Van Der Beek said at the time that he first received the diagnosis in August 2023, adding that he was getting treatment and focusing on his health. "I was honestly in shock," Van Der Beek recalled to "GMA" in December last year, speaking about his diagnosis. "I was doing what I thought I needed to do by getting a colonoscopy, which obviously, I did need to do." "I was in amazing cardiovascular shape. I was eating what I thought was healthy, and I had a whole agenda for what I thought my year would be and what I thought my priorities would be in the next couple of weeks and months," he continued. "And the reality that all of that was going to change and take a different trajectory -- it felt like a nightmare, honestly, at first, that I couldn't quite wake up from. And yeah, it's a lot." Van Der Beek will star in "Elle" alongside Lexi Minetree, June Diane Raphael, Tom Everett Scott, Gabrielle Policano, Jacob Moskovitz, Chandler Kinney and Zac Looker. The upcoming prequel will follow Elle Woods (Minetree) in high school as we learn about the life experiences that shaped her into the iconic young woman we came to know and love in the first "Legally Blonde" film, according to a logline. Laura Kittrell is the co-showrunner and executive producer on the series alongside Caroline Dries.

James Van Der Beek joins Prime Video's Legally Blonde prequel series Elle as he continues cancer battle

Just two months after he was unmasked as the Griffin on Fox's The Masked Singer, and as he continues his cancer battle, James Van Der Beek is getting back to work. The 48-year-old actor, who was diagnosed with colorectal cancer back in August 2023 but didn't reveal it publicly until November 2024, has signed on to star in Amazon's Legally Blonde prequel series Elle, via Deadline. He joins Lexi Minetree as the young Elle Woods, who was originally played by Reese Witherspoon in the 2001 film Legally Blonde and the 2003 sequel Legally Blonde: Red, White and Blonde. The show is set years before the events of the first movie, showing the events that shaped her life before the first movie, which saw her head to Harvard Law after graduating from a California college. Van Der Beek will play Dean Wilson, a current school superintendent and the city's new mayoral candidate in a recurring role. The actor also took to Instagram to share the news with his 1.6 million Instagram followers on Thursday. 'So, this is exciting… I'm going back to work for a bit. Super excited to join this awesome cast in such a fun project,' Van Der Beek began. He added, 'Almost as excited as my wife and girls are that I'm doing this,' he said of his wife Kimberly Brook and their daughters Olivia, 15, Annabel, 11, Emilia, 9 and Gwendolyn, 6. The post amassed nearly 11K likes in the three hours since he posted the news to his fans. Elle was created by Laura Kittrell (High School, Insecure), with a cast that also includes June Diane Raphael, and Tom Everett Scott as Elle's mother and father, Eva and Wyatt, plus Gabrielle Policano (Liz), Jacob Moskovitz (Miles), Chandler Kinney (Kimberly), and Zac Looker (Dustin). Also featured in recurring roles are Jessica Belkin (Madison), Logan Shroyer (Josh), Amy Pietz (Donna), Matt Ober (Principal Anderson), Chloe Wepper (Ms. Burke), David Burtka (Chad), Brad Harder (Charlie), Kayla Maisonet (Tiffany) and Lisa Yamada (Amber). Witherspoon will executive produce through her Hello Sunshine production company, with creator Kittrell serving as a co-showrunner with executive producer Caroline Dries. Lauren Neustadter and Marc Platt will also executive produce, with Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect) directing the first two episodes. Van Der Beek first announced his colorectal cancer diagnosis back in November 2024, more than a year after after he was first told by doctors. 'Each year, approximately 2 billion people around the world receive this diagnosis. And I'm one of them,' began. He added, 'I've been dealing with this privately until now, getting treatment and dialing in my overall health with greater focus than ever before.' 'I'm in a good place and feeling strong. It's been quite the initiation, and I'll tell you more when I'm ready,' he added. The actor also apologized, 'to all the people in my life who I'd planned on telling myself. Nothing about this process has occurred on my preferred timeline.' He added that he was planning on doing an extensive talk with People to reveal the news, but he revealed the news on Instagram when he learned a tabloid was planning on revealing the news. 'But we roll with it, taking each surprise as a signpost, pointing us toward a greater destiny than we would have discovered without divine intervention. Please know that my family and I deeply appreciate all the love and support,' he concluded. He later told People that he's 'cautiously optimistic' about his cancer battle, adding, 'I'm in a place of healing, my energy levels are great.' He also appeared in Fox's The Real Full Monty special, where he bared it all to spread awareness for prostate, testicular, and colorectal cancer testing and research. The actor added in a video back in March that he had to be away from his family while getting treatment, stating it made him, 'look my own mortality in the eye.' 'I was away for treatment, so I could no longer be a husband who was helpful to my wife. I could no longer be a father who could pick up his kids and put them to bed and be there for them. I could not be a provider because I wasn't working.' As he was contemplating his identity, the Vampirina voice actor said, 'I was faced with the question, "If I am just a too-skinny, weak guy, alone in an apartment with cancer, what am I?" The Downsizing actor said he was meditating on that question, when he got an answer regarding what he considered his diminished status. 'I am worthy of God's love simply because I exist. And if I'm worthy of God's love, shouldn't I also be worthy of my own?' he asked. 'As I move through this healing portal toward recovery, I wanted to share that with you because that revelation that came to me was in no small part to all the prayers and the love that had been directed toward me,' he said.

Why Joshua Jackson Is Comparing His ‘Dawson's Creek' Audition to ‘The Hunger Games'

Joshua Jackson's audition for Dawson's Creek was a competition, to say the least. During a recent appearance on Jesse Tyler Ferguson's Dinner's on Me podcast, the Doctor Odyssey actor recalled auditioning for the hit drama series, comparing it to The Hunger Games. Fires 'I think I had, like, nine auditions,' he said. 'I think first for Pacey, then for Dawson, then back to Pacey,' before ultimately landing the role of teen heartthrob Pacey Witter. James Van Der Beek ended up playing Dawson. However, it was the final audition when Jackson said things got a bit odd. 'They take you to the Warner Brothers Ranch. I don't even know if this place exists anymore,' Jackson recalled. 'And the WB had this Quonset hut basically off on the side. And when you walk in, there's a giant gong and a woman at the desk whose job it is to say, 'W, W, WB,' every time she answers the phone,' imitating the network's famed jingle. 'I shit you not,' The Affair actor continued. 'And in that room are 35 potential kids who are now put into this Hunger Games moment. And you spend literally the entire day getting called in groups.' He recalled groups of two and four going into the back to audition, 'and then, you come out and four people are just gone. And then two people are gone.' Jackson remembered being there for 'an entire day, until the sun goes down.' But once the final cut of auditions rolled around, he said he was in washroom at the time and heard the gong go off. 'I come out of the toilet, and now every executive from the WB has come from every office everywhere and is just standing there staring at me and James and Katie [Holmes] and Michelle [Williams] as we're like, 'Oh, this is where they eat us, I guess,'' he quipped. But they actually told the four young actors, 'Congratulations. You just got the job.' Jackson said he didn't even know 'which role it was' that he landed initially, adding that it was 'uncomfortable' just standing in the room. 'That's how they used to do their castings,' he explained. 'If you hit the gong, everybody has to scurry out of the office to get whatever the news is, and I would like to think that at some point, somebody there was like, 'This is not great. This is weird.'' Dawson's Creek, which ran for six seasons from 1998-2003, followed a group of friends navigating their teen years and early adulthood in the fictional town of Capeside, Massachusetts. Jackson added that once he was cast in the show, 'I was astonishingly appreciative of the paycheck and the change that that made in my life. You know, I always enjoyed acting and performing and so I was also astonished that I was like, 'Hey, I can do this. I'm being allowed to do this every day.'' How to check for 4 types of cancer increasing in younger people

In the UK, a growing number of people under the age of 50 are being diagnosed with cancer. Incidence rates of the disease have increased by 22% in people aged 25 to 49, according to data recorded between the 1990s and 2018. But for the first time, scientists from the National Cancer Institute in the US have pinpointed the main types of cancer young people are at greater risk of developing, with breast, bowel, kidney and uterine varieties topping the list for early-onset cases. While the study focused on US data, a rise in these cancers is being seen globally, including here in the UK. Being diagnosed with cancer under the age of 50 is still rare, but oncologists say that spotting symptoms at an early stage, when the disease isn't too large and hasn't spread, increases the likelihood of successful treatment. Plus, although we tend to associate cancer with lumps and bumps, the disease can cause many different signs and symptoms — some that are specific to certain areas of our body, such as changes to our breasts or skin, or other more general changes, like unexplained weight loss or bloating. To help you stay on top of home health checks, here's how to look out for the four main cancers increasing in younger populations, plus what to do if you notice anything unusual. As the most common type of cancer in the UK, breast cancer accounts for 15% of all new cancer cases in the country. Although it's more frequently diagnosed in older women, early-onset cases are rising, with 18% of cases now found in women under the age of 50. Becoming familiar with the way your breasts normally look and feel with regular breast self-exam is one of the best ways to stay on top of any changes. The NHS advise you should do this once a month, feeling for the following symptoms: A lump or swelling in your breast, chest, or underarm area Changes to the skin on your breast, like dimpling (similar to orange peel) or redness A difference in the size or shape of one or both breasts or either side of your chest. While some asymmetry is normal, look out for any changes that feel unusual for you Nipple discharge when not pregnant or breastfeeding, which may contain blood Changes in the appearance of your nipple, such as it becoming inverted or developing a rash that resembles eczema Sores or ulcers on the chest After Dame Deborah James died from bowel cancer at the age of 40 (and Dawson's Creek actor James Van Der Beek spoke out about being diagnosed with it at 47), awareness around this type of cancer has greatly increased among younger people. Also known as colorectal cancer, the main symptoms of the disease tend to show up in stools, so while it's not always pleasant, periodically checking the colour and consistency of your poo before flushing the toilet can potentially save lives. According to the NHS, symptoms of bowel cancer to look out for include: Changes in your poo, such as having softer poo, diarrhoea or constipation that is not usual for you Needing to poo more or less often than is usual for you Blood in your stool, which may look red or black Bleeding from your bottom Often feeling the urge to poo, even if you've just been to the toilet Tummy pain A lump in your tummy Bloating Unexplained weight loss Feeling very tired or short of breath - this can be a sign of anaemia, which can be caused by bowel cancer By and large, kidney cancer is most likely to be diagnosed in older populations, but there has been a steady and substantial increase in rates across all age groups over the last decade. The tricky thing about kidney cancer is that most people who are diagnosed don't have symptoms, and it's most often detected by chance during a scan for something else. Still, there are some possible signs to watch out for, according to the NHS: Blood in your pee A lump or swelling in your back, under your ribs, or in your neck Pain between your ribs and waist that does not go away Loss of appetite or losing weight without trying to Feeling tired or having no energy A high temperature that does not go away Sweating a lot, including during the night While it's more common in women who've been through menopause, anyone with a womb can be diagnosed with uterine cancer. The most obvious symptom is abnormal bleeding from the vagina, but the NHS say there are many other warning signs to be aware of. These include: Heavy periods that are unusual for you Vaginal bleeding between your periods A change to your vaginal discharge A lump or swelling in your tummy or between your hip bones Pain in your lower back or between your hip bones Pain during sex Changes to how often you pee and poo (this can be either more, or less, than usual) The first thing to do is try not to panic. While noticing new health changes can be concerning, the symptoms of cancer often overlap with many other less serious issues, so the NHS say it's more likely to be something else. However, if it is cancer, spotting it early can make a real difference, as treatment is more likely to be successful in the initial stages. Your GP should be your first port of call, who can refer you to a specialist for further testing if necessary.
