Devon and Cornwall Police Interim Chief Constable has contract extended

The interim Chief Constable of Devon and Cornwall Police has agreed to stay in the role for a further 16 months. James Vaughan was appointed in December 2024, after the suspension of the Acting Chief Constable Jim Colwell. The Police and Crime Commissioner, Alison Hernandez, has extended Mr Vaughan's contract to 2027 and said people living in Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly would benefit from a "much-needed period of stability." She said: 'I have been really pleased to see how Chief Constable Vaughan has tackled head-on several legacy issues from the period of unstable leadership that preceded his appointment. 'It's so important that Mr Vaughan and I take a unified approach in delivering my Police and Crime Plan priorities. She added: 'I look forward to the coming 16 months which I am confident will see more good work and continued improvement under Mr Vaughan's experienced leadership.' Chief Constable James Vaughan said he has "really enjoyed" leading the force over the past eight months. He said: 'It is a personal privilege to be asked by the Commissioner to stay on in my role. "I have really enjoyed leading this fantastic organisation and seeing the great work officers, staff and volunteers do every day to keep our communities safe. 'Despite some challenging times, we have made considerable progress over the last few years and that is testament to the hard work of everyone in the force..'

The process to recruit a substantive Chief Constable is planned to begin in the summer of next year.

Devon and Cornwall's most senior police officer said he was "proud as punch" that the force had been removed from special measures after nearly three Constable James Vaughan attributed the improvement to an increase in police numbers and "strong leadership".The force was downgraded into special measures in 2022 due to "very serious concerns" about emergency call response times, crime recording, and management of violent and registered sex the force's upgrade, Mr Vaughan said: "I'm hoping people will be proud of their police force and come to us when they need their help." The force is answering 999 calls faster and making it easier to report antisocial behaviour, he Vaughan added that investigation standards were "improving, [but] not where we need them to be"."Many of the same people that were here when we went into special measures are still here and they're the people that have worked really hard to take us out," Mr Vaughan said. He acknowledged the last few years had been a difficult period, adding: "There's only so many times you can tell your teams they're not good enough." Mr Vaughan also said he had commissioned a review of all the force's live stalking investigations, following the murder of Claire Chick in Chick was a university lecturer from Plymouth who was stabbed by an Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is currently investigating the force's "prior interaction" with her before the Vaughan said the IOPC's review made some "clear recommendations" to improve weaknesses in how the force handled stalking, which had now been said there had been 3,300 stalking offences recorded in the two counties in the last 12 Vaughan took on the role on an initial year-long contract but said he was "not in a hurry to leave". "The force needs stability. We have a strong team here and I'll stay as long as I'm needed," he Andy Cooke, Ch Insp of Constabulary, said the force had made "good progress" and would now return to routine monitoring.

Wetherspoon is making a major alteration to its pub menus from this Friday as it brings back a favourite item. The pub chain's popular Brunch Burger will be making its comeback to menus on Friday, June 13, due to customer demand, reports However customers will only have a very short window to enjoy it as it's only staying on the menu for one weekend only. The customer-favourite is made of 100% British beef 6oz patty, American-style cheese, maple-cured bacon and a free-range fried egg, topped with a hash brown made from 100% British potato. The burger meal comes with chips, six beer-battered onion rings and a drink. Wetherspoon states it has more than 150 different drinks to choose from, including a range of regional craft beers. The majority of Wetherspoon pubs will be serving the meal over the Father's Day weekend for £9.99, if ordering a soft or non-alcoholic drink, or for £11.52 if ordering an alcoholic drink. Wetherspoon marketing executive James Vaughan said: "The Brunch Burger will return for one weekend only by popular demand. It comes after the pub chain added four new gourmet burgers to its menu last month, including a Cheese Meltdown, the Big Smoke, Buffalo and BBQ Stack. The new additions mean customers now have a choice of seven gourmet burgers to choose from in total, all of which come served with six beer-battered onion rings, iceberg lettuce, tomato and red onion, and chips or a side salad, on request. All of the burgers are made with 100% British beef and come freshly cooked to order, and traceable from farm to fork. Wetherspoon said the average price of a gourmet burger in 343 of its pubs is £10.19 with a soft drink, or £11.72 with an alcoholic drink, but prices may vary by location. Wetherspoon chief executive John Hutson added: "We are always keen to offer our customers the widest choice of good quality meals at value-for-money prices. "We believe the four new burgers will prove popular with a wide range of customers at our pubs."
