'Too old': Jamie Elliott act to force Collingwood's rivals into major rethink

Jamie Elliott, Scott Pendlebury and Steele Sidebottom were the stars of the show for Collingwood as they obliterated the Hawks 16.11 (107) to 8.8 (56) win on Friday night and the Magpies' list management could be set to force a rethink for rivals. Elliott's latest five-goal display for the Magpies has once again shown rivals Collingwood are not going to slow down this year, despite boasting the oldest average age of any squad in the AFL. Only last year, coach Craig McRae was facing calls on his veterans after Collingwood suffered in 2024 and were carrying veterans Pendlebury (37) and Sidebottom (34) into the current campaign. But the coach stuck by his s and even promoted Elliott into the leadership group. And the Magpies' 'Dad's Army' have proved that age will not deter this group with a number of their veterans making a mockery of the younger Hawks side on Friday. Collingwood entered the clash with the Hawks with an average age of 28 years and seven months. After being managed last week, Sidebottom returned with 27 possessions and two goals in a superb display at the MCG. This included one long goal that saw him tear down the wing. While Collingwood superstar Nick Daicos was at his influential best again, it was forward Elliott that stole the show. On track for a career-best season at 32 years old, Elliott blasted five goals in a player-of-the-match display. This took him equal top of the Coleman Medal sitting alongside Geelong star Jeremy Cameron on 33. Elliott is only six goals short of his career-best tally of 39 in a season, which he achieved back in 2023. And Elliott and Sidebottom's latest display against a hungry-Hawks outfit have prompted the question over whether team's will re-evaluate their list management going forward. Collingwood have stuck by their veterans when their were calls to move some of them on. Calls have grown for Elliott to be offered a two-year deal to keep him at the club and the forward is certainly proving it would be a bargain. Code Sports reporter Daniel Cherny pointed out Collingwood are asking the question of 'how old is too old?" with their current crop of veterans pushing the boundaries. This could see a change in how list management is thought out going forward with Sidebottom, Pendleburry and co defying the criticism. Would not at all be surprised if Collingwood's performance this season leads to a complete recalibration of list management and the "how old is too old?" question. Pies tonight had an average age of 28 years and seven months, with Sidebottom (34) and Elliott (32) among best. — Daniel Cherny (@DanielCherny) May 30, 2025 Disappointing result but gonna give Collingwood a big wrap here. People writing them off because of a bad year last season, and a few blokes in their 30's. Those blokes were the difference tonight. Sidebottom and Elliott are bloody champions and still underrated #AFLPiesHawks — Timbo 🟡🟤 (@Tom074009) May 30, 2025 Collingwood simply have to offer Jamie Elliott at least a 2 year deal now. He's earned that and more. And the Lions are after him again #gopies — Matt (@Mattys123) May 31, 2025 Jamie Elliot is one of the few Collingwood players I love, doesn't play for free kicks, doesn't whinge to the umpire like half of them do, just gets on with it and is a sensational match-winning player. Would love him on your team. #AFLPiesHawks — Samuel Power 🇦🇺 (@SamuelPower68) May 30, 2025 While fans were impressed with how sharp Collingwood were, so was Hawks coach Sam Mitchell. Speaking after the game, Mitchell talked about his briefing with the players after they were thoroughly outplayed by a number of veterans. "I asked them actually," Mitchell said about his lengthy post-game meeting with the players. "Just had a bit of a discussion around 'let it all out', 'what's going on?', and 'where are you at?', and 'where are we at?', and 'what do you think?'. "I think it was pretty clear to everyone that was here and those watching at home, we're at this point, miles off it. That Collingwood team are super sharp. We played Brisbane last week, and they were very good as well, but that was another level today. So that's what we need to aspire to and above to beat them when it matters." Mitchell's words resonated with Ginnivan. The former Collingwood star was one of the Hawks' best in the defeat having kicked three goals and produced 31 possessions. But the youngster admitted the team could be in for a hard week at training after Collingwood won the tackle count 82-38 having suggested players should "bring the mouthguards". "Telling some hard truths," Ginnivan told Channel 7 after their meeting with Mitchell. "We've done it before, and we always respond well to that." "Bring the mouthguards to training."Jack Ginnivan shares how the Hawks reacted to their loss to the Pies.#AFLPiesHawks — AFL (@AFL) May 30, 2025

‘Didn't feel right': Collingwood skipper left ‘rattled' as teammate ‘severely' hurt in scary scene

Collingwood captain Darcy Moore says 'it didn't feel right' that play was allowed to continue after Lachie Schultz's scary concussion. Schultz was evidently dazed after a significant fourth-quarter collision with Fremantle's Jordan Clark, who was in possession of the ball at the time of contact. The small forward struggled to gather himself in the aftermath, even while in the hands of medical staff, but play was allowed to continue as the Pies went forward and Jamie Elliott capitalised with a set shot goal. Sixteen seconds of open play elapsed between the collision and Jamie Elliott marking inside-50 for the Pies, with no whistle from the umpires to halt play. Fox Footy commentator Adam Papalia said 'Schultz in a lot of distress, play almost needs to stop', describing it as 'distressing scenes'. Adam Simpson said: 'They'll have to delay play, you'd think.' Will Schofield said in commentary: 'Lachie Schultz is trying to run off, they need to take that decision away from him, he's been unconscious in the middle of the ground.' Speaking to Fox Footy's Kath Loughnan post-game, Moore took the opportunity to explain just how 'rattling' a circumstance it was for himself and his teammates to observe in real-time. 'First things first, when you see an incident like what happened with Lachie Schultz, just competing so hard, it's just so rattling to see,' Moore said late Thursday night. 'And it's a reminder, I suppose, for everyone watching at home, everyone at the stadium, just the risks that the guys take in stepping out here, and what they're prepared to do. Watch the brutal Lachie Schultz collision in the video above 'We love 'Shooter', he's one of our favourite teammates, he does that stuff week in, week out — it's pretty rattling to see. 'When the game's on the line, to have one of your heart and soul players experience that — a concussion like that — it's pretty rattling. 'To be able to kind of brush that off in a sense and then deliver and get the four points on the road on a short turnaround sums up our group at the moment.' Moore revealed players from Collingwood and Fremantle believed the game should have been stopped to allow trainers to safely remove Schultz from the field. 'We were pretty concerned at how severe he looked, how disorientated he looked,' he continued on Fox Footy. 'Players on both teams thought the game should've been stopped at least for 20 seconds to let him off the ground. 'Obviously, a lot of the Freo guys are connected to Lachie as well, so that was really our first concern, because of just how nasty it looked. Moore added that play continuing while Schultz was visibly struggling 'didn't feel right'. 'It felt like … well, he was right in front of me, so I could see how much he struggled walking, so it just felt like, 20 seconds — it was a set shot anyway — it felt like it was right in that moment (for play to stop), but clearly it only happens when it's near the play,' the Magpies' skipper said. 'It felt like, out here in the moment, (when) someone's in a state like that and we're still running around chasing the footy — it didn't feel right.' Following the interview, Dockers legend Matthew Pavlich said: 'You could see how much it affected the players out there, when a teammate goes down like that … a talking point, I'm sure.' Unfortunately, it is Schultz's second concussion in the space of a year, having also suffered one in 2021. He'll be placed in protocols and will miss at least the Pies' Round 10 clash with Adelaide. Herald Sun journalist Jon Ralph outlined the situation from an AFL umpiring standpoint. 'It was about 10 seconds from (Schultz) being hit — the ball spilled around, it went forward and Jamie Elliott took the mark,' he began on Fox Footy's post-game coverage. 'The AFL umpires have total discretion over that one, and so as Laura Kane said when commenting on the Harrison Jones injury (last week) … It is up to the umpires, and as Laura said, it is all about safety — it's all about making conservative calls. 'He was still coming off the ground there when that goal was kicked, and so you'd think that if they (the umpires) had their druthers, they would have stopped that play.'

Rattled Pies say umpires should have stopped the game

Collingwood captain Darcy Moore says it simply didn't feel right that the umpires didn't stop the game against Fremantle following a sickening concussion to Lachie Schultz. Schultz was left prone on the ground after copping a shoulder to the head while tackling Dockers' defender Jordan Clark in Collingwood's 15.7 (97) to 12.11 (83) win on Thursday night. Umpires let play continue, despite even Fremantle players pointing out Schultz on the ground. In further worrying scenes, a groggy Schultz collapsed to the turf a short time later after trying to get up and walk off the field. By this time, Collingwood forward Jamie Elliott had taken a mark in attack, and he was allowed to take his set shot as Schultz finally recovered enough to jog off the ground. An awful collision sees Lachie Schultz in real trouble, but play continues and the Pies extend their lead. 📺 Watch #AFLFreoPies LIVE on ch. 504 or stream on Kayo: BLOG MATCH CENTRE — Fox Footy (@FOXFOOTY) May 8, 2025 After the match, Moore described how "rattled" he and his fellow players were after seeing Schultz in distress. "We were pretty concerned at how severe he looked, how disoriented he looked," Moore told Fox Footy. "Players on both teams thought the game should have been stopped at least for 20 seconds to let him off the ground. "A lot of the Freo guys were getting to Lachie as well. That was our first concern, given how nasty it looked. "He was right in front of me so I could see how much he struggled walking. "It felt like 20 seconds - it was a set shot anyway - so it felt like it was right in that moment (to stop the play). "It felt like out here in the moment, (when) someone is in a state like that and we're still running around chasing a footy - it didn't feel right." Both Collingwood coach Craig McRae and Fremantle counterpart Justin Longmuir agreed that play should have been stopped. "Ideally you could stop the game," McRae said. "We were all just worried about his welfare, and we called for the stretcher, and our doctors were trying everything they can to sort of just get Lachie okay. "My love and care for Lachie is paramount, and his well-being is paramount. "We want to protect our players, and you don't like to see your players laying on the ground." Given Schultz is a former Docker, Longmuir has a connection with the Magpies' forward. "It would have been nice if it had been stopped," Longmuir said. "I hope he's okay. I know he's had some concussion issues in the past, and it's never great to see anyone in those moments, let alone someone who I've worked closely with and have a lot of respect for. "Fingers crossed he recovers well." Collingwood's win was achieved despite leaving Brody Mihocek, Scott Pendlebury, Jordan De Goey and Brayden Maynard back in Melbourne off a five-day break. Elliott stepped up to kick six goals, while Jack Crisp was also sensational. Star midfielder Nick Daicos, who looked to be battling a hip/back injury, finished with just 18 disposals, four clearances and one goal, but he looked dangerous when he went into attack.
