Task force members react to consultant's proposal
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — In its latest report, a consultant has new recommendations for the Project Prison Reset Task Force. Arrington Watkins submitted its recommendation Monday morning. After weighing factors such as location, availability to utilities and to emergency vehicle access among other things, the group recommended for the task force to take a closer look at six of the possible 13 sites, with one familiar location leading the way. DOH reports first measles case in South Dakota The six sites at the top of the consultant's list are the existing Lincoln County site, CitiBank and Kappenman, which are both in Sioux Falls, Worthing, Mitchell and Huron. 'It was necessary to somehow get down to a manageable list. Six seems reasonable,' South Dakota Republican Representative and task force member Greg Jamison said. The locations were analyzed based on a point system. At the top was the Lincoln County site, located between Harrisburg and Canton. 'One of the key takeaways is they're trying to find a place for 1500 or 1700 beds all in one place. There's a lot of advantages and efficiencies to having one location with these many beds where you've got one fence, one perimeter to manage, you've got all that food that needs to be prepared,' Jamison said. However, Republican representative and task force member Karla Lems sees it differently. 'I don't think we have to have it all in one spot. I disagree with him on that. I think we have opportunity in Sioux Falls. I go back to the DLR Group study, which made a lot of sense to me. You could build another 300-bed facility between the old hill and the Jameson. You can add up on the Jamison 192 beds,' Lems said. It gives the task force plenty to discuss at its next meeting in Pierre Tuesday. 'I think it's going to be very spirited and, full of ideas, questions and hard answers, probably hard questions. But tomorrow, I think you're going to see some outcomes that finally get this prison issue on the right track,' Jamison said. 'I think we're going to have a lot of input. I think we're going to have testimony from people, probably from these different areas that have been proposed to say, 'These are the things that would be good about it coming to our town or our city.' They're going to have opposition to some of these things,' Lems said. The task force will meet at 10:30 Tuesday morning in Pierre. We will be livestreaming the discussion on on our website. Task force reacts to inmate assault reports
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The Division of Criminal Investigation is looking into reports of several assaults on the South Dakota State Penitentiary's campus this week. This latest incident concerns Project Prison Reset task force members for a number of reasons. 'Where we're at today, that opportunity for those inmates to injure a correctional officer exists, and we need to eliminate that,' South Dakota Republican Representative Greg Jamison said. Jamison said Tuesday's reports reflect the challenges prison staff face when it comes to separating inmates inside the current men's prison facilities. In a news release, Attorney General Marty Jackley says, ' Evidence suggests that the assaults are gang related.' 'One of the challenges with the prison is to separate those gang members or opposing gang members, if you will, so they never wind up in the same area at the same time because these fights are probably inevitable,' Jamison said. South Dakota Republican Senator Jim Mehlhaff worries the current facilities are not safe for staff or prisoners. 'Just the design of it. Blind corners and dead ends,' Mehlhaff said. 'It's difficult to put prisoners where they need to be because of the overcrowding.' The issue is what sometimes leads to inmate fights. 'Imagine you're in a space, as you can appreciate, in a crowded area, and all of a sudden you start pushing and somebody pushes back. It turns into a fight pretty easy,' Jamison said. 'That overcrowding piece has just got to get fixed, and the new prison is going to eliminate that.' It's one of the task force's top priorities when it comes to building a new men's prison. Having more rehabilitation resources is important, too. 'We don't want to take people off the streets and just hold them indefinitely and put them back out on the streets to recidivate again,' Mehlhaff said. 'A new prison is going to be a safer place for the employees. That's one of the things I'm hopeful for and I'm looking for,' Jamison said. 'The current setup right now is not a safe place.' MHS seniors earn awards for scholarship, leadership, citizenship
Roughers baseball player Luke Jamison says academics mean more than sports. 'My parents always told me I'm a student athlete, not an athlete student,' Jamison said. 'So being a student comes first.' Such priorities paid off Friday when Jamison received the Buck Ballard award at the Muskogee High School Class of 2025 awards assembly. Various awards were presented for ability, leadership, scholarship and citizenship at the assembly. The Buck Ballard Award is presented to outstanding MHS male and female athletes who also succeed academically. Raegan Essex, who played volleyball, received the award as a female athlete. Essex said maintaining good grades and good scores 'was always about finding a good balance, finding time to work on my school work, always.' Jamison said the Buck Ballard Award 'shows how much work Raegan and I put in over the years.' Many seniors were honored for years of work and achievement. Aijah Brown earned the Thomas E. Yadon Outstanding Vocal Soloist after being named to an all state honor choir for three years and the District Honor Choir for five years. She also received the Orville Eaton Music Cup for her work in school musicals. 'It's a great honor to receive all these things, especially since I'm a very musically talented person and I feel my talents are being recognized through all of this,' Brown said, adding the Eaton Award surprised her. 'I know I have performed and given my best and tried my hardest to put my heart out there,' she said. Stern Award recipient Addison Moffett earned the school's highest academic honor while attending the school's Early College High School program. Through four years in the program, Moffett earns an associate degree from Connors State College, as well as an MHS diploma. 'It shows that all my hard work was worth it, and I proved myself,' Addison said. McEntee Award recipient Wyatt Stephens, who earned second highest GPA in the class, said the award 'shows that all my hard work has paid off.' Students also were awarded for being leaders and 'good citizens.' History teacher Jeffrey Dupree said Daughters of the American Revolution Award recipient Alison Alexander and Paul Young History Cup recipient Mikayla Harkey exemplified what he seeks to teach. 'One of my goals is to teach how history points out importance of citizenship and participating in our republic. These girls participated actively,' Dupree said. 'I look at each and I see a citizen.' Multi-colored cords, to be worn at Friday's commencement ceremony, were presented to class presidents. Kate Gilliam earned the Madison Tomlinson Student of Character Award. Gilliam said she was happy and surprised to receive it. 'It's important for me because I pride myself in treating everyone with kindness and patience,' she said. 'I hope this can inspire people to do the same.'

'Nepo baby' whose father and uncle starred on iconic comedy show is now a singer... can you guess who she is?
A Hollywood ' nepo baby ' who hails from a beloved comedy dynasty has entered show business with a career of her own. The 25-year-old's father and uncle both starred on a series that has emerged as one of the most iconic TV programs in American history. Her uncle was also the leading man of multiple legendary comedy movies, including one that has become an enduring classic about the college experience. Last year, she herself featured on a beloved US soap opera, one that has been airing continuously on CBS for nearly four decades. She is now also a singer-songwriter, who this Monday night could be seen playing a glamorous cancer benefit in Beverly Hills. Can you guess who she is? She is Jamison Belushi, the daughter of Jim Belushi and the niece of the late John Belushi, both of whom were among the early stars of Saturday Night Live. John was part of the seven-member original cast of Lorne Michaels' sketch show when it aired its first season on NBC in 1975. During a brief but dazzling career cut short by his galloping drug problem, John established himself as a reigning comedy star of the late 20th century. His movies included the 1978 college romp National Lampoon's Animal House, in which he stole the show as a fraternity brother called Bluto with a bottomless appetite for drink. He and his comedy partner Dan Aykroyd won the hearts of fans around the world with their 1980 musical comedy The Blues Brothers. After several turbulent years of rampaging substance abuse, John died of a cocaine and heroin overdose in 1982 at the age of just 33. The following year, his little brother Jim joined the cast of Saturday Night Live, having broken into movies with the 1981 film Thief starring James Caan and Willie Nelson. His movies include the 1983 comedy Trading Places starring Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd, as well as the 1986 war drama Salvador directed by Oliver Stone. John was part of the seven-member original cast of Lorne Michaels' sketch show when it aired its first season on NBC in 1975; pictured on the opening sketch of the premiere episode In his more recent career, he has acted in such films as the 2010 Roman Polanski feature The Ghost Writer with Pierce Brosnan and Kim Cattrall, as well as the 2017 Woody Allen picture Wonder Wheel with Kate Winslet and Justin Timberlake. Perhaps his greatest success came with his hit sitcom According To Jim, in which he played the patriarch of a suburban family. The series ran eight seasons from 2001 until 2009 - during which time it gave little Jamison her acting debut in 2005, the year she turned six. Jamison is Jim's daughter by his third wife Jennifer Sloan, whom he married in 1998 and split from in 2021b when they both filed for divorce. As an adult, Jamison continued her acting career with the 2019 film The Last Summer, and since last year has been on six episodes of the long-running soap opera The Bold And The Beautiful as a hospital lab technician called April. She is also a singer-songwriter, and has relocated to the country music capital of Nashville, Tennessee to pursue her ambitions. However she was back in the Los Angeles area this week, playing the An Unforgettable Evening benefit for the Women's Cancer Research Fund, held at the ritzy Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. Last year, her singing career allowed her to pay a tribute to the legacy of her late uncle - that summer, she played the Blues Brothers Con at the Old Joliet Prison in Illinois that was featured in the movie.
