JETRO and CIC to Showcase Promising Japanese Biotech Startups at "Japan Innovation Night" during BIO International Convention 2025 in Boston
BOSTON, June 06, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) and CIC Japan Desk will once again host "Japan Innovation Night: Best in Biotech" - a groundbreaking event showcasing the latest advancements in biotechnology from Japanese startups. This exclusive gathering will take place on Wednesday, June 18th, 2025, from 5:30pm to 8pm in Venture Café at CIC Cambridge. This event provides a unique opportunity for U.S. venture capital firms and pharmaceutical companies, particularly those based in the Greater Boston Area, to explore potential partnerships and synergies with innovative Japanese biotech firms. That same week, JETRO will also be organizing the Japan Pavilion at BIO International Convention 2025 in Boston; therefore, JETRO is pleased to bring several of the exhibiting startups to present their products in a more intimate setting at Japan Innovation Night. The event will feature ten carefully selected startups that will each be given three-minute pitches to present their latest innovations and partnering strategies and goals. A networking session will also be arranged for after the pitch session. In 2024, the Japanese government updated its Bioeconomy Strategy, expressing its intent to step up its support for bioeconomy fields in Japan. This is on top of an already one trillion-yen budget measure enacted by the Japanese government in fiscal year 2022. The Bioeconomy Strategy underscores the Japanese government's commitment to expanding Japan's bioeconomy in the hopes of providing solutions to a myriad of societal and economic issues, from the environment to food to health and economic development. In the Strategy, the Japanese government commits to enhancing the local startup ecosystem, ensuring its support aligns with the domestic biomanufacturing sector's structure and the challenges its players face. By coordinating initiatives across government efforts, the Bioeconomy Strategy aims to establish environments that foster startup creation, growth, and R&D. Princess Aiko Arrives in Osaka to Observe Expo; Will Visit Japan Pavilion, International Red Cross Pavilion
Jiji Press Princess Aiko arrives at Osaka Itami Airport in Toyonaka, Osaka Prefecture, on Thursday. OSAKA — Princess Aiko, the only daughter of the Emperor and the Empress, flew to Osaka Prefecture on a commercial flight on Thursday morning to observe the Osaka-Kansai Expo. The princess will stay in Osaka until Friday. On Thursday, the princess was to visit Yumeshima, the artificial island that is the Expo site, and observe the Grand Ring. She was also set to visit pavilion such as the Japan Pavilion and the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement Pavilion, operated by her employer, the Japanese Red Cross Society. On Friday, the princess will visit the Singaporean Pavilion, the Earth Mart signature pavilion themed on food and exhibitions by countries such as Kenya, Ghana and Yemen. The Expo opening ceremony in April was jointly attended by the Emperor, the Empress, Crown Prince Akishino, who is the honorary president of the Expo, and Crown Princess Kiko. The 2005 Aichi Expo received frequent visits by members of the Imperial family, who visited all 92 pavilions.

Japanese Emperor to attend Osaka opening ceremonies of 2025 World Exposition
April 11 (UPI) -- Japanese Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masakpo visited Osaka for this weekend's 2025 World Exposition opening. They will attend the opening ceremony for the six-month event and will tour the artificial island of Yumeshima and its Grand Ring of wooden roofed pavilions -- the world's largest wooden structure. The emperor and empress will also visit Expo facilities including the Japan Pavilion and Osaka healthcare Pavilion before heading back to Tokyo Friday evening. They will also visit the International Red Cross and Red Crescent pavilions. During the 2025 World Exposition opening ceremonies Saturday the Emperor will give a speech. Crown Prince Akishino is honorary president of the Expo. He and Princess Kiko will attend the opening ceremony. The Expo will last six months, from April 13-October 13. The theme is "Designing Future Society For Our Lives." It will feature exhibits and be a place, according to the Expo website, "where the world's knowledge such as cutting-edge technology will be brought together, used to create new ideas, and shared, all to help resolve global issues facing humankind." It is intended to "address issues facing humankind on a global scale." On Monday the Emperor and Empress marked the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II on Iwo Jima. In that month-long February 1945 battle, 21,900 Japanese and 7,000 U.S. soldiers died.
