Nintendo denies Switch 2 report claiming that Japanese retailers are getting a bigger cut of each sale following a timely drop in stocks and shares

Nintendo has publicly debunked a report claiming that the company is allowing Japanese retailers to earn more from each Nintendo Switch 2 console sold. While the Nintendo Switch 2 looks poised to be a success no matter how you shake it, Nintendo has taken some unconventional approaches to the launch of its new console. For example, a Japanese-only version of the console which is selling for 20,000 Yen less than the multi-language version. Even the Mario Kart World bundle is a bit of an unconventional choice, since the last Nintendo console to come bundled with a game at launch was the Wii back in 2006 (and even then, Wii Sports was only a pack-in after Reggie Fils-Amié fought for it). Just ahead of the Nintendo Switch 2 launching later this week, Bloomberg reported that Nintendo would be giving a bigger cut of every Nintendo Switch 2 sold to retailers. "Store operators will be able to make a gross margin of about 5% on each Switch 2 sold, higher than the informal industry standard of roughly 2%" the report said, adding "The decision will help bolster domestic retailers and ensure the new console is given prominent placement at outlets across the country." Around four hours later, Nintendo took to Twitter to debunk the rumour: "A news report related to the wholesale price of Nintendo Switch 2 in the Japanese market was published. We want to clarify that this report is not true. Nintendo does not disclose any information regarding business conditions with distribution and retail partners."While Nintendo is well known for not commenting on rumours, on Monday (when this report was published) Nintendo shares dropped which likely led the publisher to make a public statement about the report. Nintendo forecasts 15 million Switch 2 sales in 2025-26
The successor to the Switch -- the third best-selling console ever behind Sony's PlayStation 2 and the Nintendo DS -- is set to hit shelves worldwide on June 5. While Nintendo is diversifying into theme parks and hit movies, around 90 percent of its revenue still comes from the Switch business, analysts say. However the unit sales forecast is more conservative than the 16.8 million expected in a survey of Bloomberg economists. The Switch, a handheld and TV-compatible device that became a must-have gadget during pandemic lockdowns, has sold around 150 million units since its launch in 2017. For the financial year that ended on March 31, Nintendo reported a 43.2 percent fall in full-year net profit to 278.8 billion yen ($1.9 billion), as gamers wait to splash their cash on the Switch 2. Nintendo forecast a net profit of 300 billion yen for the current financial year but warned that US trade tariffs could impact its earnings. "Changes to tariff rates may affect our financial forecast. We will continue to monitor the situation to respond to changes in market conditions," it said. The company last month revealed details about the Switch 2, a hybrid console like its predecessor. However the price has raised eyebrows at over a third more than the original Switch in major markets including the United States, where it will cost $449.99. A Japanese-only version for domestic consumers will cost 49,980 yen ($350). Nintendo delayed pre-orders for the Switch 2 in the United States by several weeks as it assessed the fallout from President Donald Trump's trade levies. But last month it boasted of higher-than-expected demand in Japan for pre-orders of the new console. Ahead of Thursday's earnings release, Atul Goyal of Jefferies said "we expect demand to significantly exceed supplies" of the Switch 2. Recent news that the next title in the Grand Theft Auto video game series had been postponed to May 2026 is also a positive for Nintendo, Goyal said. "GTA6 does not have a direct impact on Nintendo, but it sure makes Nintendo's competition far less intense" in terms of game launches, he wrote in a note. © 2025 AFP

‘Drop the price': Behind the pushback on Nintendo's Switch 2
Among nongamers, the big story after Nintendo announced the Switch 2 console on April 2 was how President Donald Trump's on-again, off-again tariffs have thrown the device's future for U.S. customers in flux. For many gamers, though, the more pressing concern is how Nintendo seems to be nickeling-and-diming just about every facet of the Switch 2 experience that it can. The day after announcing that the Switch 2 would hit shelves on June 5 for a suggested retail price of $450 in the U.S. and in Japan for either ¥49,980 (for a Japanese-only model) or ¥69,980 (for a multilanguage and regionlock-free model), Nintendo returned for another video presentation specific to upcoming games for the console. In the live YouTube chat, though, commenters were more interested in communicating their own message: 'DROP THE PRICE.'
