Oscar McInerney no certainty to return for Brisbane's battle with the Giants

Oscar McInerney's 'deserved rest' could extend by at least another week as the Lions continue to manage the health and fitness of their first-choice ruckman. McInerney has missed Brisbane's past four games with niggling injuries that include a back problem. However, the 30-year-old big man has been deemed fit enough to be named among the emergencies for Brisbane's past three matches to cover for any late mishaps that might occur with his replacement, premiership-winning ruckman Darcy Fort. Brisbane star Jarrod Berry said the team did not 'miss anything' with having Fort in the line-up, with the Lions seemingly in no hurry to recall McInerney despite losing to Adelaide by five points last Friday night. ''Big O' has been a warhorse for us for so long, and he's one of those guys that won't say how he's feeling,' Berry said. 'He's going pretty good from what I can gather. I'm not fully across it in terms of the exact thing that's going wrong, but he's out there on the track, he's training, he's looking good, but he needed that deserved rest. 'He'll be back in that later part of the year. I don't think we miss anything because 'Forty' fills that void really well and has been playing some great footy over the last few weeks.' However, Berry lauded the 'energy' that McInerney provided whether he was playing or sidelined. 'He's one of those guys that really leads with action, and you walk taller with him around here,' Berry said. While disappointed to lose to the Crows at Adelaide Oval, particularly with Brisbane having had a host of chances in the final quarter to win, Berry was confident the second-placed Lions would bounce back on Saturday at the Gabba against the GWS Giants. 'We played how we wanted to in that fourth quarter (against Adelaide). We just didn't take our moments and finish our work,' he said. 'Upon reflection, there's probably a few guys that felt like they let the team down in that aspect, but that's football. 'We owned what we wanted to own in that quarter. It was in our forward half a lot. It's just making the most of those moments and those opportunities.' The Lions and the Giants will renew a rivalry that reached a high point in last year's finals series when Brisbane fought back from 44 points down in the third quarter at Engie Stadium to win by five points and end GWS's season. 'It definitely adds a little bit extra to it but … this year's a new year. We're both coming off a loss, so we're both going to want to respond,' Berry said. 'I feel like our brands both match it in those finals-like games, so that's what we're going to be expecting on the weekend.'

Gold Coast Suns youngster gives away penalty for the most bizarre reason

A bizarre moment during Brisbane 's clash against Gold Coast at the Gabba on Sunday night as youngster Bailey Humphrey appeared to throw a chunk of mud at Jarrod Berry. The incident took place just before quarter time, with the 20-year-old looking to put his opponent off with the piece of turf, as Berry looked to slot a major from just outside the arc. Humphrey was seen bending over and waving his arms as Berry began his run-up. He stooped down, grabbed a piece of turf and then flung it at his opponent as he got closer, ultimately conceding a 50 mere penalty. 'Oh no! That's a cardinal sin with a wet ball, he wasn't going to make the distance,' Jonathan Brown, speaking to Fox Footy, said. 'Picked up a handful of mud and threw it at Jarrod Berry.' Throwing mud is a unique way to give away a 50m penalty 😅 📺 Watch #AFLLionsSuns on ch. 504 or stream on Kayo: — Fox Footy (@FOXFOOTY) May 4, 2025 Bailey Humphrey was seen bending down and picking up a piece of mud during Gold Coast's clash against Brisbane on Sunday 'It's cost him and his team 50 metres and a goal. In the rain, it would have fallen short,' Anthony Hudson added. 'Brisbane's only goal registered on the back of that ... The QClash has delivered another little bizarre moment for us!' Brisbane would go on to take a three-point lead after the goal and would come out again in the second quarter firing, with Charlie Cameron nabbing a quick-fire brace before Conor Mckenna extended the hosts' lead. Jed Walter would pull a strike back to see the Suns trail the 2024 premiers 32-21 at half-time.

Suns midfielder Bailey Humphrey gives away 50-metre penalty throwing ball of mud at Jarrod Berry

Gold Coast midfielder Bailey Humphrey cost his team a goal by throwing mud at Brisbane's Jarrod Berry. Berry was lining up for a shot at goal from about 50 metres out after the quarter-time siren during their Q-Clash to finish the AFL round on Sunday night when he was hit with a handful of some Gabba turf. In wet conditions, the Lions midfielder's shot at goal went flying as the umpire's whistle went, which was made worse when Berry's kick fell short on the goal line. Instead of being touched through for a point, Berry was walked all the way to the goal square, where he kicked the Lions' first goal of the match. 'That's a cardinal sin,' Jonathan Brown said. 'With a wet ball, he wasn't going to make the distance. 'He picked up a handful of mud and threw it at Jarrod Berry.' Anthony Hudson added: 'Well, with the most controversial under-arm since Trevor Chappell at the MCG back in 1981, Gold Coast Suns' Bailey Humphrey throwing a bit of mud and grass at Jarrod Berry has cost him and his team 50 metres and a goal. 'In the rain, it would have fallen short. 'Brisbane's only goal was registered on the back of that. 'So, the Q-Clash has delivered another bizarre little moment for us.'
