Australian influencers threaten to 'go on strike' and stop posting content as they start a union

A group of Australian influencers have threatened to stop posting content online and 'go on strike' until the public starts to appreciate them more. Veronica B, known for her skits about Middle Eastern stereotypes, took to the stage at the AIIMS Creator Hub in Sydney on Wednesday night with her demands. She said she 'doesn't know how the world would survive' without influencers, and moaned she was 'sick and tired' of being treated 'like a joke'. 'I'm sick and tired of us influencers being treated like we're a joke... We deserve more rights and we deserve to be taken seriously,' she said. Veronica, who has 578,500 followers on TikTok, was cheered on by 100 other influencers as she said it was 'hard work' being an influencer. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'As content creators and influencers, I don't know how this world would survive. How would people know where to eat if we didn't do restaurant reviews?' she continued. 'How would people know how to do their makeup if we didn't do Get Ready With Me videos? How would people know what to wear if we didn't do outfit hauls. 'I've decided to start an Australian Influencer Union.' Other fellow content creators have voiced their support for Veronica online. Dani Russell, who boasts 700,000 TikTok followers, uploaded a video questioning what was harder: being a mother or a creator. Sydney-based creator Jasmin Mitwali claimed influencers work even harder than doctors and teachers. 'Honestly I do [work harder]. You literally have to stay relevant, come up with content all the time, film, do the work behind-the-scenes,' she said. It comes after Veronica was slammed in December 2024 for saying it was 'hard work' being an influencer. She found herself in hot water after an interview at the Sydney TikTok Awards went viral. The comedian was asked about her line of work as she posed on the red carpet moments after arriving at the awards show in a Rolls Royce. 'I know it looks fun but it's hard work,' Veronica said of her influencing gig. 'You have to think of content, you have to edit it, you have to film it, you have to be constantly relevant and that is not easy.' Veronica was quickly slammed for being 'out of touch' by viewers of the viral clip. 'I'm just coming home from a 13-hour shift, on my feet for 11 of those 13, but damn this must have been hard! Praying for you,' one woman wrote. 'I think the disconnect may be between a job being "hard" and "taking time". Even if it takes time to edit film etc, it's not necessarily "hard" work,' another wrote. 'Finished my 12-hour night shift and am about to start my next shift four hours later but this must have been so hard for you,' a third commented.

Foreign drug mule nabbed in Tawau with syabu worth over RM74,000

Published on: Thursday, July 31, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 31, 2025 By: Amir Anuar Text Size: Jasmin (center) with two of his officers displaying the seized drugs and other items. TAWAU: An attempt by a foreigner trying to transport over two kilograms of syabu worth RM74,500 into a neighbouring country was thwarted when he was arrested along Jalan Pelabuhan at 9.30 am on July 25. Preliminary police investigations revealed that the 22-year-old suspect was allegedly paid nearly RM4,000 by a drug syndicate from the neighbouring country to smuggle the drug across the border. Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the suspect was arrested after he was found carrying two transparent plastic packets, believed to contain syabu, inside a backpack. 'The suspect did not possess any travel documents and is believed to have entered Malaysia illegally through a rat trail on July 21,' he said. Jasmin added that the suspect had initially been waiting for the right time to exit via the Tawau Public Jetty near the former Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex. However, police intelligence and public tip-offs led to his detection. The suspect was unemployed and had entered the country for the first time solely to collect and deliver the drug to a drug syndicate in his country. 'The suspect was remanded for seven days. Initial urine tests found to be drug-negative,' he said. Jasmin said the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, with police also focusing efforts on identifying the source and network of the syndicate involved. He said that Tawau police remain committed to aggressively combating drug trafficking, especially to ensure legal action is taken against those involved. 'So far this year alone, we have recorded over 30 kilograms of drug seizures. Since I began my duty in Tawau in March 2022, more than 100 kilograms of drugs have been confiscated,' he said. He described these achievements as a benchmark of police commitment to protecting the community from drug activities through the arrest of suspects and large-scale seizures. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Lodge report if harassed via the use of AI: Police

Published on: Wednesday, July 30, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 30, 2025 By: Amir Anuar Text Size: Jasmin said the existing laws, including the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, may be used to take action, particularly in cases involving criminal threats. - Pic for illustration only. TAWAU: The public is urged to lodge a police report if they are harassed, threatened or humiliated through the use of artificial intelligence (AI) on social media. The call comes amid growing concerns over the misuse of AI-generated images or videos to bully, intimidate or defame individuals online. Authorities are also concerned that political supporters may resort to AI manipulation on social media as the 17th State Election (PRN) approaches. Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said police are aware of these emerging threats and are closely monitoring any misuse of technology that could disrupt public order. 'We are aware that irresponsible parties now have various tools, including AI, which can be used to humiliate or provoke others. 'We advise victims to report such incidents to the police,' he said. He said the District Criminal Investigation Division and Commercial Crime Investigation Division are actively monitoring such activity. Jasmin said the existing laws, including the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, may be used to take action, particularly in cases involving criminal threats. He also advised social media users to be mindful of their conduct online, just as they would in public, to maintain peace and safety. On preparations for the coming state election, Jasmin said his team has already begun early planning, including personnel readiness and identifying key needs to ensure maximum security throughout the process. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Foreigner caught with RM74,000 worth of syabu in Tawau drug smuggling attempt

TAWAU: A foreigner, believed to have been paid 15 million rupiah (approximately RM3,874) by a drug syndicate to smuggle narcotics via the old Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) jetty here, was arrested with more than two kilogrammes of syabu last Friday. The 22-year-old suspect, originally from Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, was apprehended by a team from the Tawau district police headquarters after he was seen behaving suspiciously along Jalan Pelabuhan at around 9.30am. District police chief Assistant Commissioner Jasmin Hussin said the arrest was made following intelligence and surveillance that led to the suspect's detection. He is believed to have entered the district illegally via an uncharted route on July 21. "A check on his backpack revealed two gold-coloured plastic packets labelled 'Guanyinwang' and 'Freeso Dried Durian'," he said. "Inside were two transparent packets containing crystalline substances believed to be syabu, weighing a total of 2,062 grams and valued at approximately RM74,500. "Interrogation revealed that the undocumented suspect had entered the district illegally for the first time and admitted to being paid by the syndicate to smuggle the drugs out of the country," he said at a press conference today. Jasmin added that the suspect has been remanded for seven days until Aug 2 to assist investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment upon conviction. "Police are also actively tracking down others linked to the syndicate," he added. So far this year, Tawau police have seized more than 30 kilogrammes of syabu in a series of arrests involving individuals and drug trafficking syndicates.

The arrest, made less than 24 hours after receiving a tip-off, reflects the police's rapid response in combating crime. Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the suspect was detained around 6.20pm during Ops Bersepadu Cegah Jenayah/Op Kesan. He said the man had been acting suspiciously while carrying a paper bag, prompting police to stop and search him. 'Upon inspection, police recovered a branded laptop bag and its contents, believed reported stolen earlier,' Jasmin said in a statement on Sunday. The suspect reportedly became aggressive and refused to cooperate, forcing officers to use minimal force to subdue him. Further checks revealed his prior criminal record, including drug-related offences.
