British Open cut line: Bryson DeChambeau squeaks into the weekend, while Brooks Koepka is among big names heading home

Bryson DeChambeau woke up Friday morning with a 7-over first round at the British Open around his neck. He knew he'd need to do something special in order to make the weekend, and he did, firing a 6-under 65 to finish the day at 1-over to make the British Open cut. "I woke up this morning and I said, you know what, I can't give up," DeChambeau said. "My dad always told me never to give up, just got to keep going, and that's what I did today. I was proud of the way I fought back, really persevered through some emotionally difficult moments, and to hold myself together and not get pissed and slam clubs and throw things and all that like I wanted to." That perseverance rewarded him with two weekend tee times, which he did not get a year ago. The top 70 and ties make the cut at The Open. That number toggled between 1-over and 2-over all afternoon. It finally settled at 1-over, meaning a birdie on 17 loomed large for DeChambeau. Notable names who are on the wrong side of the cut line include Jason Day (+2), Zach Johnson (+3), Patrick Cantlay (+3), Patrick Reed (+5), Min Woo Lee (+6), Brooks Koepka (+7), Sahith Theegala (+7), Collin Morikawa (+7) and Adam Scott (+9). For Cantlay, Reed and Koepka, missing the cut is a blow to their Ryder Cup chances, in that they're not giving captain Keegan Bradley good reasons for him to make them a captain's pick. The last time the tournament was played at Royal Portrush, in 2019, the cut stood at +1. The lowest cuts relative to par since 1969, when the R&A began keeping stats for the category, were -1 in both 2006 (Royal Liverpool) and 1990 (St. Andrews). The lowest cut by total strokes was 141 in 2021 (Royal St. George's); a +2 cut would be 144 strokes.

7 golfers who shockingly missed the cut at The 2025 Open Championship

A thrilling Thursday and Friday have come to a close at Royal Portrush as the 153rd Open Championship enters a fiercely competitive weekend. Matthew Fitzpatrick was firing on all cylinders and took a clubhouse lead of nine-under after his second round. Then Scottie Scheffler finished up right behind him by firing a 64 to take the lead at 10-under. All the while, 2023 Open Championship winner Brian Harman lurks at eight-under with Tyrell Hatton (-5), Tony Finau (-4) and Rory McIlroy (-3) still in the hunt. Unfortunately, the cut line came into play at one-over par, forcing The Open to head into the weekend without a number of big names. These were the most surprising to miss the cut. All odds via BetMGM Jason Day (+2) Pre-tournament odds to win: 80-1 If only they gave out extra points for wearing the wildest sweaters on the course, Jason Day might very well be in contention. Instead he's heading home early after posting rounds of 73 and 71. Joaquin Niemann (+2) Pre-tournament odds to win: 55-1 After finishing T8 at the PGA Championship, Niemann has now missed the cut at back-to-back majors. He was a fringe contender at The Open following his opening round 70, but a 74 on Friday put him on the wrong side of the cut. Patrick Cantlay (+3) Pre-tournament odds to win: 60-1 It's been a major championship season to forget for Cantlay, who finished T36 at The Masters before missing the cut at the PGA Championship, U.S. Open and now The Open. Cantlay shot 73-72 over the two days and was never really in contention. Min Woo Lee (+5) Pre-tournament odds to win: 90-1 Min Woo Lee was not cooking much in majors this year, either. He missed the cut at the PGA Championship, U.S. Open and The Open with a 49th-place finish at Augusta his best result. He went 74-73 over his first two days. Quite a letdown after three Top 30 finishes in majors last year. Sahith Theegala (+7) Pre-tournament odds to win: 225-1 The odds don't give a true reflection of Theegala's talents, but it's clear he's been off this year. A neck injury that forced him to miss a month may not be fully healed. In that sense, shooting 75-74 at one of the toughest courses in the world is worth celebrating. But hopefully his game gets back in order soon enough. Brooks Kopeks (+7) Pre-tournament odds to win: 55-1 Koepka's T12 finish at the U.S. Open wind up as his best achievement this year. He has now missed the cut at every other major after going 75-74 at Royal Portrush. Not what you expect from golf's big game hunter at all. Collin Morikawa (+7) Pre-tournament odds to win: 33-1 Easily the most shocking name on this list. Morikawa hasn't been at his best this year, but he had been trending in the right direction after his T8 at the Rocket Classic. Then came last week's Scottish Open, where Morikawa followed up an opening round 68 with a 76 to miss the cut. That snowballed at The Open this week, where he shot 75-74 and never had a chance to contend.

Brian Harman hauled in to be DRUG TESTED after shooting stunning second round 65 to lead The Open at Portrush

BRIAN HARMAN was drug tested after his stunning six-under round of 65 at The Open. The American, 38, won at Hoylake two years ago to be crowned Champion Golfer of the Year. And his superb bogey-free second round at Royal Portrush - to go with his two-under day on Thursday - gave him the clubhouse lead when he rolled in his birdie on 18 at -8. But when he was asked if he felt similar feelings at this stage compared to 2023, Harman joked there was one identical detail. That is because, just like at Royal Liverpool, Harman was hauled in by the anti-doping team to check his pee - a common test for golfers as in other sports. Harman told BBC Radio 5 Live: "I can't get too far ahead of myself. "I've got a drug test after this, just like I did on the Friday at Liverpool. "Hopefully the weekend works out the same." Harman led by five shots at the midway point two years ago and ran away with it over the weekend. He finished on -13 with a six-shot gap back to Jason Day, Tom Kim, Jon Rahm and Sepp Straka in T2. He added: "Although the golf courses are different, the style of golf is very similar, I think. "I'll approach the weekend the same way. "The only thing I'm really worried about is the first tee ball tomorrow, and then I'll try to hit the next one up there close to the flag. If not, go to the second hole. "It's a very boring approach that I take. I'm not trying to be heroic or do anything crazy. "I know that I've got the game to do it, and it's just a matter of executing and staying in my own head. "I love coming over here. As far as golf, it's as pure as it gets." Harman sparked controversy in 2023 when it came to light that he was a keen hunter, dubbing him the nickname the 'Butcher of Hoylake'. He stalks deer, wild boar and ducks back home and reckons he once wrestled an alligator with his bare hands. Harman said: 'I'm still a big hunter, a big fisherman. I was surprised and curious why everyone was asking so many questions about it (in Hoylake). 'I didn't realise that everyone was so upset about it - but hunting, it's a hill I'll die on, I'll sleep like a baby at night. 'I'm a very compartmentalised guy, though. I'm not thinking about hunting when I'm golfing. I'm not thinking about golfing when I'm hunting.'

Jason Day Grabs Attention With Outfit At Open Championship

The world's best golfers have gathered in Northern Ireland for the year's final major, the Open Championship. The tournament is the oldest in golf, and is one of the four major events along with the US Open, PGA Championship and the Masters. It's one of the few events that truly represents what the golf world has to offer, as PGA Tour players are able to compete against LIV golfers. That adds names like Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau to the list, both major champions in their own right. Another former major champion is already making headlines ahead of this weekend's action at Royal Portrush, and it's all to do with his unique outfit choice. Jason Day has gone viral at several tournaments for his outfits from upscale streetwear-inspired golf brand Malbon, and this week's event is no different. Day was spotted in a cozy outfit on the driving range, getting some practice in before the tournament while wearing a cream-colored pullover sweater. He paired the top with a pair of baggy plaid pants, putting together a look that wouldn't be out of place next to 90s stars like Payne Stewart and Greg Norman. Malbon Golf was founded by Stephen and Erica Malbon in 2017, and the brand has focused on creating fashionable golf apparel that's suitable to wear on or off the course. Malbon has collaborated with several top brands in and out of the golf space, including Adidas, New Balance, Undefeated, Jimmy Choo and more. Day, the 2015 PGA Champion, is Malbon's highest-profile player on the men's tour. Other top Malbon golfers include women's stars Charley Hull and Jeongeun Lee6. Xander Schauffele won last year's Open Championship, and the Olympic gold medalist will look to become the first repeat winner since Padraig Harrington went back-to-back at Carnoustie and Royal Birkdale in 2007 and 2008. The last American player to do it? One of the greatest of all time, Tiger Woods. Woods won the Open Championship in both 2005 and 2006, adding to his 2000 victory at St. Andrews. We'll see what Day has in store this weekend on the course, but he's certainly a winner when it comes to the category of best-dressed golfers. Australian golfer competing at The Open brands NI climate ‘craziest' he's seen, prompting response from Barra Best

An Australian golfer competing at The Open in Portrush has expressed his surprise at the unpredictable climate in Northern Ireland, calling it the 'craziest' he's 'ever experienced.' The 37-year-old, from sunny Queensland, added: 'I'd love to be a weather man here. You just get it wrong all the time.' His comments resulted in a response from local weatherman Barra Best, who advised the pro golfer to check the forecast in the future. 'Poor Jason Day,' the BBC presenter said in a social media post. 'Clearly didn't pay attention to this morning's forecast.' It comes as The Open kicks off its first day of the tournament following several days of practice as the top golfers got accustomed to their surroundings. Northern Ireland also faced its second weather warning in the space of 48 hours yesterday after the Met Office issued a new thunderstorm alert. The Open saw a wet start to the tournament with showers affecting most of the region with up to 20mm of rain in some places. A Met Office spokesman said: 'Consider if your location is at risk of flash flooding. If so, consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit. The Open Day One - Paul Kimmage, Brian Keogh and Conor McKeon bring you their take on an emotional first day for the Irish at Portrush 'Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary. 'Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.' This week has seen a noticeable change compared to the soaring temperatures and sunshine of the previous week, with the latest warning coming after a similar alert for thunderstorms was in place on Tuesday. Highs of 28C were seen in some places as thousands flocked to Twelfth parades across Northern Ireland.
