Chile mine collapse: Search ends after 5 miners found dead – DW – 08/04/2025

The rescue team dug several feet underground to retrieve the bodies of the miners who got trapped after a partial collapse of the El Teniente copper mine in Chile. The body of the fifth and last missing miner was found on Sunday, days after the collapse of a tunnel at the world's largest copper mine in Chile. "Today we finally found [dead] the last of the missing workers," Aquiles Cubillos, prosecutor for Chile's O'Higgins region, told reporters. Rescuers dug two dozen meters (78 feet) of underground passages to retrieve the body of the miners. On Thursday, a part of the El Teniente copper mine collapsed after a 4.2 magnitude tremor, which initially killed one person and injured nine others. Following the tremors and the partial collapse of the El Teniente tunnel, which trapped five mine workers, operations were suspended at the tunnel. It is still unknown whether the tremor was due to a natural quake or because of mining activity. State-run mining firm Codelco, which operates the tunnels, discovered the first trapped worker on Saturday and the other four on Sunday. Codelco Chairman Maximo Pacheco said the miner would convene international experts to probe and determine "what we did wrong." "This tragedy hits us hard," Pacheco told reporters at Codelco's offices in the city of Rancagua, near the mine in central Chile. Chile's mining industry is one of the safest in the world, with a fatality rate of 0.02% last year, according to the National Geology and Mining Service of Chile.

Mexico: Veracruz prison riot leaves 7 dead – DW – 08/04/2025

The spiraling unrest at the Tuxpan prison in eastern Mexico led to state forces intervening to restore order. Inmates were reportedly angered by the Grupo Sombra criminal organization operating in the prison facility. A prison riot in the eastern Mexican state of Veracruz led to 7 people dead and 11 others wounded, regional authorities said Sunday. The riot broke out at the Taxpan prison in the city of the same name. Videos circulating on social media showed fires at the penal facility and plumes of smoke rising from the prison grounds. "As a result of the riot, we report the tragic deaths of seven inmates and 11 injured people," the Department of Public Security of Veracruz said in a statement. Police and security forces intervened to quell the unrest at the prison. The riot reportedly broke out on Saturday after inmates expressed anger over extortion and abuse by members of the Grupo Sombra criminal organization at the prison. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A 2012 report by Mexico's human rights commission found that six out of 10 Mexican prisons are controlled by either prison gangs or drug cartels. Mexican prisons also face other issues such as overcrowding and corruption. The Tuxpan prison had 778 inmates in June, exceeding the 735 prisoners it was designed to hold. According to Mexican newspaper , Grupo Sombra made its first public appearance in 2017, when its hitmen gave frozen turkeys and soda to residents in Veracruz for Christmas that year. Armed masked men forced women to smile for the camera and men had to give a thumbs up in a photo posted online to show gratitude for the "gift." More recently, Grupo Sombra was linked to the femicide of a 65-year-old retired teacher in July. reported that Grupo Sombra consider themselves a splinter group of the Gulf Cartel, and that they aim to fight the Los Zetas syndicate and Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) in Veracruz. Grupo Sombra also claim to engage in social work that the Mexican government doesn't do.

African migrant boat capsizes off Yemen, killing dozens – DW – 08/04/2025

The vessel was taking Ethiopians to Yemen, a popular transit country for migrants to reach wealthy Gulf nations such as Saudi Arabia. The UN says Yemen is witnessing an influx of African migrants, despite a civil war. A vessel carrying African migrants sank off the coast of Yemen, killing dozens, the UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Sunday. Sixty-eight of some 154 migrants on board the boat died when it sank early on Sunday, with 74 still missing, the Associated Press news agency reported, citing the IOM. The passengers on the vessel are reported to all be Ethiopian nationals. Dozens of bodies have washed ashore in the southern Yemeni governorate of Abyan. Authorities in Abyan are taking part in a search and rescue operation. Abdusattor Esoev, the head of the IOM in Yemen, told AP that 12 migrants survived the capsizing of the boat. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Despite a decade of civil war, Yemen is still a popular transit country for migrants seeking access to wealthy Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia for a better life. There is a large Ethiopian community in Saudi Arabia, with significant diaspora populations also in the UAE and Bahrain. On their journey in Yemen, the Ethiopians face danger due to the war between the Iran-linked Houthis and the UN-recognized government. A 2020 Human Rights Watch Report found the Houthis killed and expelled Ethiopian migrants in Yemen at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Ethiopia faces a high level of poverty, and the country is grappling with the aftermath of a conflict involving the restive Tigray region An IOM report published in March found that 60,000 migrants came to Yemen in 2024. The IOM says the route between the Horn of Africa to Yemen is "one of the world's busiest and most perilous mixed migration routes." The Horn of Africa is made up of not only Ethiopia, but also Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea and the breakaway region of Somaliland. Drought conditions exacerbated by climate change and resulting food insecurity are also reasons why migrants leave the Horn of Africa and head to the rich Gulf Arab states or Europe. Russian TikTokkers 'arrested for taking selfies outside oil depot inferno'

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A Ukrainian drone strike on an oil depot in Sochi – the Russian resort that hosted the 2014 Winter Olympic Games – was captured in a video shared online by two TikTok influencers. Footage circulating online shows two young women posing metres away from the inferno, allegedly caused by drone debris hitting a fuel tank. The pair have since been identified as Dasha Vladimirovna, 21, and Karina Evgenyevna, 19 – who have since been detained for accidentally exposing Vladimir Putin's failures to defend Russia. Flames are seen raging behind the two, with pillars of smoke rising into the sky, after the overnight attack. Dasha and Karina do not appear shocked – in the video, they are rapping to the track Crimson Dawn by singer Endshpil, a famous Russian rapper. Before they were identified, police had issued an appeal to members of the piublic, saying: 'During Internet monitoring, a publication was found of two girls filming a video against the backdrop of a fire in Sochi. 'The police have initiated an investigation, measures are being taken to identify the girls, and their actions will be legally assessed.' It was later confirmed that Dasha and Karina had been detained, and there were calls from pro-war outlets for them to issue a public apology over the stunt close to Sochi Airport. Police have not shared the real reason for their arrest, but it is likely that it is the potential glamourising of a Ukrainian strike on Putin's favourite Black Sea resort. The Kremlin has been taking an increasingly hard line against social media stunts seen as highlighting Ukraine's successes in the war. Ukraine's attack is seen as one of the most symbolically and strategically significant ones – deep within Russian territory since the start of the full-scale invasion. The oil depot sustained a direct hit, causing the explosion of a 2,000 cubic metre fuel reservoir and sparking a fire visible across Sochi. More than 120 firefighters and 35 emergency vehicles were deployed to the scene, and operations at the nearby airport were suspended as a precaution. Despite the official account from the governor of Krasnodar, Veniamin Kondratyev, describing the incident as a result of falling drone fragments, widespread footage circulating online paints a starkly different picture. More Trending Videos captured by local residents show towering plumes of black smoke, an orange-glowing night sky, and the sound of drones overhead. In one video, a panicked resident exclaims: 'It's flying, again! Right to the airport!' Moments later, another voice shouts, 'It's a tragedy! Everything's burning!' These images have sharply contrasted with the restrained language used by Russia's regional and federal authorities. David Attenborough fans left facing ‘nightmares' after spider sequence

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video For most people, just the thought of a cluster of spiders crawling on top of each other within a large, entangling web is enough to send a shiver down your spine. But for David Attenborough and his latest series Parenthood, which explores the trials and tribulations of parenting within the animal kingdom, clearly, that's not enough. The 99-year-old natural historian seems to be intent on showcasing one of the most nightmarish sequences possible as a 1,000-strong pack of young African social spiders can be seen eating their mothers. Captured by TV cameras in a never-before-seen moment, the premier episode of the series saw the spiders prey in a game of 'grandmother's footsteps' where they freeze in unison like musical statues before eating their elderly relatives. Attenborough explained 'demands of parenthood are finally taking their toll' on the mothers who offered their body as a 'gift' to their offspring before they departed. The atmospheric music, toe-curling sound effects and Attenborough's iconic voice combined to create the painstaking moment. 'Unsurprisingly, the moment left many viewers in complete shock. Oh my GOD they eat their Mum then all their relatives. It just confirms what I have always know spiders are EVIL,' Viki posted on X. 'These spiderlings are nightmare fuel,' Melanie shared. 'A lioness, a giraffe,a hippo & a gang of cannibal spiders, it's been a bit of a blood bath in tonight's #Parenthood I can hardly watch,' Neil added. Series producer and director Jeff Wilson described it as 'probably one of the best' sequences he had worked on in 30 years of film-making. '[I've] never heard Sir David deliver a sequence as good as that… it sort of brings a lump to your throat… he's the master at delivery,' he told the Guardian. 'It makes one feel quite sort of chilled to the bone that you know that your own young could do that. It's an extraordinary behaviour [but] when you step away from it and from the horror of it, it sort of makes sense.' He added that Attenborough was both 'delighted and horrified' by the groundbreaking footage. Joking, he also said that 'there will not be a parent of the land who won't turn up to school pickup without snacks ever again'. This comes after Metro exclusively shared a spectacularly tender moment from Parenthood between a female western lowland gorilla and her newborn baby. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video The snoozing baby gorilla is in a state of peaceful relaxation while lying on his mother's chest, his eyes closed as the forest hums gently around them. The five-part series Parenthood promises to show viewers never-before-seen animal behaviours while delivering a 'universal message about preserving the natural world.' More Trending Speaking to The Mirror, BBC head of specialist factual commissioning, Jack Bootle, described Parenthood as 'wonderful, warm, engaging, and surprising'. He said that it is 'made by some of the very best wildlife filmmakers in the world,' adding: 'I'm thrilled Sir David is joining us again to narrate it.' Parenthood is streaming on BBC iPlayer.
