Super Bowl Winning QB Makes Bold Prediction About Jayden Daniels

Super Bowl Winning QB Makes Bold Prediction About Jayden Daniels originally appeared on Athlon Sports. A franchise quarterback has the ability and gravity to change a team's fortunes overnight. The Washington Commanders found this out after Jayden Daniels fell into their laps in the 2024 NFL Draft. Advertisement The Commanders took Daniels, a Heisman Trophy winner out of LSU, with the No. 2 pick on April 25, 2024. Nine months later, Daniels led the Commanders out at Lincoln Financial Field for an NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Daniels claimed 49 of a possible 50 first-place votes for AP Rookie of the Year, and he was named to the Pro Bowl after leading Washington to 12 wins, its most in a season since 1991. Daniels was responsible for 31 total touchdowns and 4,459 total yards – and entering 2025, Daniels has the fifth-best odds to win NFL MVP. But former Super Bowl-winning quarterback Phil Simms is more than a little skeptical of the Daniels hype. He told Kay Adams on Monday that while Daniels won't endure a sophomore slump in 2025, he is not yet on the level of the signal-callers with higher MVP odds. Advertisement That's because Daniels' competition includes Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, Baltimore Ravens' Lamar Jackson and the Kansas City Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes – players who have combined for five MVP awards in the past seven seasons. "These are some guys, even if the team is not good, they're still capable of having outstanding seasons statistically," Simms, a former New York Giant, explained. More and more, the Commanders are being discussed as a trendy Super Bowl pick for 2025. Given Daniels' rapid rise as a rookie, his presence in the MVP conversation is not far-fetched at all. But it may take Washington's best season for Daniels to overcome the AFC's elite QBs in the hunt for pro football's most coveted individual award. Commanders NFC East Rival Begins Life With Super Bowl MVP

Commanders NFC East Rival Begins Life With Super Bowl MVP originally appeared on Athlon Sports. At one point in his NFL career, Russell Wilson was one of the best quarterbacks in the game. A Super Bowl champion and Pro Bowl star, Wilson was a dual-threat signal-caller that had the Seattle Seahawks as a top team in the league. Advertisement Now, he's looking to hang onto his career … maybe for dear life. Wilson signed a free agent deal with the New York Giants - his third team in as many years and fourth team in the last five. He believes his experience as a Super Bowl winner can help turn around the G-Men as early as this year. "The opportunity here is so great," Wilson said on the 7PM in Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony podcast. "I don't mind the lights. I don't mind that part of it. I think the other part of it for me, most importantly of it all that, is I've been here before. "When you walk into a stadium, into a locker room and you know, like my locker is the same locker I had when I won the Super Bowl. So, for me, when I see that, when I walk into the stadium I'm like, I've been here before. Not just been here but, like, we did this before." Advertisement The Commanders don't have to worry about their quarterback situation. Jayden Daniels is one of the best young quarterbacks in the game today. But it is noteworthy with Wilson being in the NFC East. Now, the Giants believe they have a quarterback who can compete with the Commanders and their young phenom. Time will tell if that was the right decision .. as he tries to turn back the clock and turn on the lights in New York. Jayden Daniels 'Holding Commanders To A Standard' With Super Bowl Goals

Jayden Daniels 'Holding Commanders To A Standard' With Super Bowl Goals originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It is a new year for Washington Commanders' quarterback Jayden Daniels, and what happened last season is well and truly in the rearview mirror. Advertisement Yes, the 12-5 record and NFC Championship appearance were nice, but that means little right now and won't help the franchise in 2025. With Dan Quinn, Daniels, and a group of veterans, including Bobby Wagner, Marcus Mariota, and Zach Ertz, helping establish and maintain the culture that will be the driving force behind Washington's success, naturally, expectations are high entering 2025. But for Daniels, he is well aware that he and the franchise are starting from scratch as offseason workouts begin. 'I think it's a standard set,' Daniels said. 'You got the core guys that set the standard, and we got those guys back. So we're bringing in new people and we're holding them to that standard, but we know everything is not going to be given to us, we got to go out there and earn it each and every day.' Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels© Eric Hartline-Imagn Images Jayden being self-aware is nothing new, and yes, last season was superb by any metric you want to use. Now, everyone is on a level playing field until the season kicks off. Advertisement After so much heavy lifting was done last season to get the Commanders out of the NFL doldrums and into relevancy, the franchise won't want all of that work to go to waste by cutting corners and not being as focused. However, it is clear that Daniels and his teammates recognize that the standards they set last season equated to Super Bowl-level success, and if they want the same results, the standards must be maintained. And Jayden is making sure it is. Commanders' roster ranked outside the top 10

The Washington Commanders' 2024 season was nothing short of magical. It was an unexpected result of mixing new ingredients together, ending up with a unicorn instead of a cake. The best possible outcome of combining GM Adam Peters' scouting ability, head coach Dan Quinn's leadership skills, and Jayden Daniels' ability to inspire and elevate the players around him. It wasn't a perfect season, ending at the NFC Championship game, but it was a far cry from winning just three games in the previous season. And, it rekindled the Commanders' fans' hopes that former owner Dan Snyder had previously squashed. Advertisement Peters and the rest of the organization understood the assignment this offseason: solidify the defense, give Daniels more weapons, and protect the quarterback. They've answered all of those questions and, as analyzed by Pro Football Focus, have earned the 11th-best roster in the NFL. The projected starting lineup includes each player's PFF grade from 2024. The Commanders' biggest strength in 2024 was Jayden Daniels. He ranked fifth among all qualified quarterbacks with a 90.6 PFF grade, and he led the league with a 1.5% turnover-worthy play rate, plus forced 52 missed tackles, which led all quarterbacks. As Daniels will return to the Commanders in 2025 (and many years in the future), his presence alone improves the roster dramatically. The additions the Commanders made during the offseason were helpful, too. This article originally appeared on Commanders Wire: PFF doesn't believe the Commanders have a top-10 roster

Commanders' Marcus Mariota Called Top Backup in League

Commanders' Marcus Mariota Called Top Backup in League originally appeared on Athlon Sports. In the modern NFL, if you don't have a good backup quarterback? Injuries being qhat they are, chances are you won't have a very good year. Advertisement No division in sports knows that better than the NFC East. Each team has won a Super Bowl in their history with a different quarterback than the one who they opened the season with. And the Washington Commanders can lay claim to the top backup in the division now. Marcus Mariota, the former second-overall pick out of Oregon, is largely considered one of the better backups in the game. NFL reporter Gilberto Manzano went so far as to rank Mariota as a top backup in the league. "As a backup, getting the starter prepared to play is just as important as keeping the team afloat when injuries occur. Jayden Daniels often praised Mariota for helping him throughout his sensational rookie season," Manzano wrote. "Also, Mariota can still play, evident by his 205-yard performance in the blowout win against the Panthers after Daniels exited due to a rib injury." Advertisement It's very important for a team to have their backup play a similar style to their starter. That is what the Commanders have with Mariota. He's a seamless veteran who can run the same offense that second-year sensation Jayden Daniels does. Should something happen to the young phenom, the Commanders won't have to panic. They can - according to rankings and maybe to logic - remain a top contender so long as Mariota plays like the top backup he is.
