MPI sues accused killer over torched vehicle
MANITOBA Public Insurance is suing a man awaiting trial in the slayings of five people — including his three young children — accusing him of torching a vehicle on the side of the highway on the day their bodies were found. MPI is seeking $43,000 in damages for the Feb. 11, 2024 incident in which it claims Ryan Howard Manoakeesick, 31, 'purposely and intentionally' set fire to a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee. 'The plaintiff states that the damages to (the) Jeep were caused solely by the fault and wilful misconduct of the defendant,' reads the lawsuit, filed July 16 in the Court of King's Bench. 'The defendant has refused or neglected to pay the amount owing to date, or any portion thereof, despite the plaintiff's demands.' Manoakeesick has remained in custody since the day of the fire on Provincial Road 248, near St. Eustache, at about 10 a.m. Police who attended the scene found Manoakeesick's three children — two-month old Isabella, four-year-old Jayven and six-year-old Bethany — dead outside the burning vehicle. Police arrested him without incident nearby. Earlier in the day, RCMP officers found Manoakeesick's common-law partner and the mother to his children, Amanda Clearwater, 30, dead in a ditch on Highway 3 near Carman. Investigators later found Clearwater's 17-year-old niece, Myah-Lee Gratton, dead inside a Carman home where all of the victims lived with Manoakeesick. He has been charged with five counts of first-degree murder, meaning the Crown believes the killings were planned and deliberate. It is one of the biggest homicide cases in Manitoba in more than a decade. Manoakeesick has a history of drug and mental-health struggles, court records show. In March 2024, a judge ruled Manoakeesick was fit to stand trial after his lawyers requested he undergo an psychiatric assessment. His next court appearances are scheduled to take place between Sept. 8 and 12 in the Court of King's Bench. Several other hearings are scheduled in February, March and April of next year, court records show. Manoakeesick has not entered a statement of defence in the MPI case. MPI estimated the cost of the Jeep at around $40,200 and the cost of fire crews to respond to the scene at around $2,000. An additional $800 was spent to cover the cost of a rental vehicle for the Jeep's registered owner, who is not named in the lawsuit. Heroic sacrifice: NYC mom gunned down in street by estranged husband was trying to shield daughter
A woman gunned down by her homeless estranged husband in Queens last month was trying to shield her daughter from the barrage of bullets when she was killed, prosecutors said Thursday. Audwin Caines, 62, allegedly approached 45-year-old Chaneil Ramsay as she walked with her 21-year-old daughter in South Jamaica around 2:30 p.m. June 23 and started opening fire, according to the Queens DA's Office. The targeted mother and daughter ducked behind a car parked in the driveway of a home on 127th Avenue near 176th Street, court documents reveal. 5 Audwin Caines, 62, is allegedly shot and killed his estranged wife as she tried to shield her daughter, prosecutors said. NYPD 113 Precinct But as Caines got closer to the pair, Ramsay stood up, stepped away from the car and ran toward the pursuing gunman to keep her daughter out of harm's way, according to prosecutors. That's when Caines allegedly shot her at point-blank range, killing her, the DA's office charged. Ramsay collapsed onto the pavement, where police found her face down, unconscious and unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head, cops said. 5 Ramsay, who was shot in the head, was found face-down on the ground unconscious and unresponsive. Kyle Mazza/NurPhoto/Shutterstock Meanwhile, Caines took off, and the victim's daughter called the cops, police said. Ramsay was taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. About two hours before the murder, the victim found the front passenger window of her Jeep Grand Cherokee shattered, with a brick inside the car, the complaint said. 5 Before the murder, Caines allegedly smashed the window of Ramsay's car with a brick and sent her threatening messages on Whatsapp, prosecutors said. Kyle Mazza/NurPhoto/Shutterstock A few minutes before that, Ramsay allegedly received a slew of messages from Caines on Whatsapp, including a photo of the broken window and threats to harm her, according to the court filing. The intimidating texts included, 'I'm going to keep f–king up your s–t,' and 'You want to f–k me over now, I'm doing it to you,' prosecutors said. Caines is also accused of bashing Ramsay in the head with a full bottle of alcohol – and then stabbing her in the chest and elbow with the broken fragments – in a separate attack back on July 1, 2024, the court docs reveal. 5 Caines is also accused of stabbing his estranged wife with a broken bottle of alcohol in another attack last year, the DA's office said. Kyle Mazza/NurPhoto/Shutterstock The couple was arguing inside their Irwin Place home when Ramsay asked Caines to leave, sparking his violent outburst, according to prosecutors. Caines was arraigned Wednesday night on charges of murder, attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal mischief in connection to the cold-blooded slaying. He was also arraigned on charges of felony assault and criminal possession of a weapon, related to the broken bottle assault, prosecutors said. 5 If convicted, Caines could spend 25 years to life behind bars. Kyle Mazza/NurPhoto/Shutterstock Caines was ordered held without bail by Queens Criminal Court Judge Sharifa Nasser-Cuellar, with his next appearance set for Friday. If convicted, Caines could face 25 years to life behind bars. 'As alleged, a 45-year-old woman was senselessly gunned down on the streets of St. Albans by her estranged husband, as part of an escalating series of violent incidents,' Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said in a statement. 'This murder shocked the community, and my office will seek justice for the family of Chaneil Ramsay.'

'My worst first date was as a teenager - we've been together for two decades'
There's nothing as romantic as a meet-cute story, but one couple's first date was memorable for all the wrong reasons Most people have a nightmare first date story, one they wish they could forget all about. However, one couple might feel differently because their worst date turned out to be the beginning of their 18-year relationship. The unusual story came to light after a Reddit user asked people to share their most cringeworthy stories. Posting on the platform, the social media user wrote: "What happened on your worst first date ever?" In response, someone explained why their worst first date happened to be memorable for more than one reason. The Reddit user claimed: "We were 16 years old, meeting at Panera. I grabbed a table by the window as I arrived first. 5 minutes later, I see her arrive in her Mercury Sable, sloooowly pulling into a spot, and promptly smacking the Jeep Grand Cherokee parked next to her." Fortunately, the embarrassing moment didn't put a damper on the couple's first date. However, it did mean the date got off to a less-than-ideal start, which is the opposite of what you want when you're trying to make a good impression. Explaining what happened next, the social media user wrote: "To her credit, she left a note on the window, then told the front counter employee who made multiple announcements over the intercom. "Nobody ever called her or walked up to the counter, though there was no perceivable damage to the Jeep's bumper where she bonked it (which had its own share of body damage already)." Despite the drama, the story had a happy ending. The post concluded: "We're having our 18 year anniversary this year." Reddit users loved the story, and while nobody would like to find themselves in the same situation, someone suggested the incident helped demonstrate the woman's character. The response read: "I was gonna say her leaving a note and notifying the restaurant was a huge green flag lol." Reacting to the post, another reader replied: "I was half expecting it to be your Jeep lol." Other commenters also shared their own dating horror stories on the thread. A different response read: "This was in 2005. He took me to the mall and had me watch him play dance dance revolution. "I was not allowed to play with him because I was not good. He just wanted me to watch, this went on for 45+ minutes. He was annoyed I wanted to leave." Someone else shared: "First date was a at a popup food event. The second we sat down he busted out a mini light set up and started live streaming it for his food blog."

Drivers are finding it harder to see out of newer cars, survey finds
The forward blind zones of six top-selling passenger vehicles in the US grew over the past 25 years as pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities soared, researchers say. — Photo: Sebastian Gollnow/dpa If you have the feeling it's become harder to get a clear view of the road from the driver's seat of a car these days, you are probably right. At least that's the conclusion of a new US survey. Researchers from the US non-profit Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) said that tech-powered features such as blind-spot monitoring seem to encourage designers to further shrink the amount of glass on a vehicle. They also pay less attention to the problem of higher bonnets and tailgates, which can obstruct the driver's outward view. The forward blind zones of six top-selling passenger vehicles grew over the past 25 years as pedestrian and cyclist fatalities soared, said the IIHS. "The across-the-board decrease in visibility for this small group of models is concerning. We need to investigate whether this is a broader trend that may have contributed to the recent spike in pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities," said IIHS President David Harkey. Vulnerable road user deaths in the US have increased to their highest level in more than 40 years, the IIHS says. "At the same time, increasing vehicle size and taller front ends may contribute to larger forward blind zones, but little is known about the role that visual occlusion may play in this trend." To quantify the blind zones, researchers from the Department of Transport (DOT) used the IIHS method to calculate the occluded and visible areas at ground level in a forward 180-degree arc around the driver at ranges of 10 metres and 20 metres. In the 10-metre forward radius nearest the vehicle, outward visibility declined in all six vehicle models measured over time. The SUV models showed up to a 58% reduction in visibility within a 10-metre radius. Other vehicles exhibited smaller (7-19%) reductions. At longer distances (10 to 20 metres), vehicles demonstrated both increases and decreases in visibility. The results show that, for the selected vehicles (Chevrolet Suburban, Ford F-150, Honda Accord and CR-V, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Toyota Camry), the outward visibility has decreased. The study noted that the biggest difference in visibility from the cockpit was observed with the Honda CR-V. In a 1997 model, the researchers measured 68% visibility, while the 2022 edition came in at just 28%. — dpa
