Actor Nusraat Faria's arrest for alleged link to murder case stuns Tollywood

1 2 3 Kolkata: Bangladeshi actor Nusraat Faria, who played the role of Sheikh Hasina in the 2023 film ' Mujib: The Making of a Nation ', directed by Shyam Benegal, was arrested on Sunday for her alleged involvement in an attempted murder case linked to anti-govt protests. The news has stunned many in the film fraternity in India and Bangladesh. Faria was produced in a Dhaka court on Monday morning and was sent to judicial custody. She made her Tollywood debut in 2015 with Ashoke Pati's 'Aashiqui: True Love' opposite Ankush Hazra. The next year, she appeared in Sujit Mondal and Saikat Nasir's 'Hero 420' with Om and Baba Yadav's 'Badsha – The Don' opposite Jeet. In 2017, she starred in Yadav's 'Boss 2: Back to Rule' with Jeet and Subhasree Ganguly. In 2018, she was back opposite Jeet in Pati's 'Inspector Notty K'. In 2019, Birsa Dasgupta cast her in 'Bibaho Obhijaan' and also in its sequel titled 'Abar Bibaho Obhijaan' in 2023. Reactions to Faria's arrest have triggered varied responses, ranging from studied silence to anger and sadness. Bangladeshi actor Azmeri Haque Badhon, a known face in both India and Bangladesh and a strong supporter of the August uprising, has taken to social media to protest, saying: "What a shame! This girl has nothing to do with what a fascist regime did to the people. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo I am deeply concerned about the situation and the system. We do not live in a country where fair play is common, but this is truly unacceptable." Speaking to TOI, Badhon said, "I have not acted with her but share a personal relationship with her. She gave me a lot of mental support when I was going through the guardianship case of my daughter. This is a political case where she figures among many other artists who I feel have been falsely charged. I am sad that she did not get bail on Monday. I am disappointed that many who have been involved in dubious activities were allowed to flee while Faria faced so much public humiliation and harassment. I strongly condemn this." Tollywood director Raja Chanda, who directed Faria and Ankush Hazra for 'Bhoy', a film released on an OTT platform in 2023, is currently shooting in Bolpur and was unaware of the details of Faria's case. "I asked my unit about it. I feel sad to hear about this. As a director, all my artists are close to me. I have done one film with her. She is a very good artist and great as a person. We had rounds of adda while shooting. I would want her to return to normal life soon and wish to see her on the big screen soon," Chanda said. Director Sujit Mondal said, "I worked with her almost 10 years ago and have not been in touch with her. I am not aware of the details of the case."

Wins & losses don't define me any more, says Sourav Kothari

Sourav Kothari clinched the 2025 IBSF World Billiards title in Ireland, beating in the final. This timed-format win comes 35 years after his father, Manoj Kothari, won the same title. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In a chat with CT, the Kolkata cueist reflects on his twin world titles, life's lows, and more. How did you discover your love for billiards? When my father won the World Title in 1990, it was a national sensation – Doordarshan aired the final live over two days, and hundreds gathered at the airport to welcome him home. I was just five then, too young to understand it all, but something clicked. I knew I wanted to follow in his footsteps. I wasn't allowed in the billiards rooms at that age, so I turned a passage in his bedroom into a makeshift table, used half a cue and tennis balls to mimic his shots. My mother was also the West Bengal ladies' state billiards and snooker champion – so I guess I was destined to fall in love with it. What's your mantra for staying focussed and dealing with negativity in a sport like billiards? For me, meditation and focus are lifelong practices, especially in a sport like billiards, where concentration and sharp eyesight are musts. I've realised that negative people – those uncomfortable with your success – will always be around. At one point, I used to take it personally, but over time, I've learned to pick my battles. 'Not every comment deserves my energy,' I tell myself now. A lot of this calm comes from my father, who taught me to value forgiveness over confrontation. True meditation, to me, is about mental discipline – staying focussed, rising above the noise, and being able to sleep in peace. Did 2012 mark a turning point in your journey? In 2012, after disappointing results, I was almost about to quit. I felt lost, but my father's words changed everything: 'Who gave you the right to make that decision? He reminded me that talent is a gift, and my worth can't be defined by wins or losses. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Despite wanting to walk away, I returned to practise the next day. That moment transformed my career, leading to multiple titles, including the World title win in 2018. It was my father's belief, and my mother's quiet strength, that carried me through. Sourav's father Manoj Kothari with the IBSF trophy in 1990 My parents' belief carried me through my dark times. With hard work & faith, you can turn things around : Sourav I don't have a special someone yet. But maybe a kind-hearted CT reader might fancy a coffee with me? : Sourav I love Bengali films. Jeet is one of my favourites. I admire Srabanti too for her talent and screen presence : Sourav 'It's more about the process now' Sourav says he has grown immensely between his 2018 and 2025 world titles. 'Back then, I was obsessed with winning,' he reflects, adding, 'But now, I've realised that while I may not always be at my best, it's important to keep showing up.' For him, it's no longer about the scoreboard but about the process – daily training, small improvements, and enjoying the grind. 'I now play with freedom and belief,' he adds. 'I might lose, but I'll never be defeated' Sourav believes success & failure are both part of life. 'Failure makes you value your wins. As I say, I might lose, but I'll never be defeated. I may not be the brightest in the room, but I know I'll burn longer than most. It's this perspective that takes the pressure off and keeps me grounded,' says Sourav. Sourav with his IBSF trophy 'I wore the same shirt on all days of the competition' When it comes to superstitions, Sourav's habits tend to change with each tournament. 'During back-to-back tournaments, including the IBSF World Billiards title, I wore the same white shirt every single day,' he laughs, adding, 'I wore it on day one, felt good in it, and since I wasn't sweating, I wore it again on day two.' He admits, 'I couldn't let go of it, so for all 12 days of competition, I wore the same shirt. Thankfully, it was laundered once!' Pix: Anindya Saha

No big fat Indian wedding: Billionaire's youngest son gets married in low-key ceremony

The youngest son of Indian billionaire Gautam Adani is getting married today in Ahmedabad city, in a seemingly low-key traditional ceremony. Jeet, son of Asia's second-richest man, was engaged to Diva Jaimin Shah, daughter of diamond trader Jaimin Shah, in March 2023. They have stayed private, with few details of their engagement emerging. Festivities began on Wednesday and videos on social media showed the couple dancing with musician Gurdeep Mehndi at a pre-wedding ceremony. The wedding, itself set for Friday, will reportedly be held according to Jain and Gujarati customs in Shantigram, a township built by Adani Realty. Several Indian media reports last month claimed Kylie Jenner, Kendall Jenner, Selena Gomez and Sydney Sweeney would be in attendance and teased a Taylor Swift performance. However, a source close to Swift told The Independent she won't be attending or performing. Mr Adani himself clarified to the media that his son's wedding would be a 'very simple' affair. 'Jeet's marriage is on 7th February. Our activities are like common people. His marriage will be very simple and with fully traditional ways,' Mr Adani said while attending the Hindu religious festival called Maha Kumbh. According to news reports, the couple have partnered with NGOs supported by the Adani Group to call attention to the causes they support. Indian fashion designer Manish Malhotra has reportedly been working with an organisation called Family of Disabled to create hand-painting shawls for the couple. Additionally, Artisans from the organisation are designing items for the wedding like place cards and plates. The couple have also commissioned Indian artisans to create various accessories and gifts for the bride's trousseau and for guests. Four hundred artisans from Nashik are weaving Paithani sarees for guests by hand, according to a report by The Times of India. Paithani is a traditional Maharashtrian weave that uses silk and gold or silver thread and is named after the town where the sarees were first made by hand. The couple have pledged to contribute ₹1 m (£9,176) each to pay for the weddings of 500 women with disabilities every year, reported NDTV. In January, media reports said more than 1,000 luxury cars were being arranged to ferry guests to and from the locations, thousands of lilies were being brought from across the world to decorate the wedding venue, and a drone show was in the works to mark the celebrations.
