(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil has reaffirmed Malaysia's full support for the Tokyo Statement 2025, pledging the country's commitment to building resilient, inclusive, and sustainable digital infrastructure across the Asia-Pacific region. Fahmi, who is leading the Malaysian delegation for the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT) Ministerial Meeting, said the gathering is a vital platform for formulating joint policies and strategies towards an inclusive, sustainable, and secure digital development in the Asia-Pacific region. 'At the same time, it acts as a stage for multilateral cooperation in the region, which is the fastest-growing in terms of technology, while also supporting developing countries in technical, capacity-building, and ICT regulatory aspects,' he said in a Facebook post today. He stressed that Malaysia remains committed to ensuring universal access, technological equity, and environmental sustainability in the digital space. During a ministerial session themed 'Sustainable Digital Infrastructure and Accessibility', Fahmi outlined the government's efforts to expand digital reach nationwide through initiatives like Jendela, which has connected over 9.03 million premises to high-speed internet and extended 5G coverage to over 82% of populated areas. He also pointed out that as of the end of 2024, Malaysia recorded an average mobile broadband speed of 105.36 Mbps and internet coverage of 98.66%. 'With a mobile penetration rate of 61% and 5G rollout, Malaysia is opening up more opportunities in education and across various industries,' he said. Fahmi added that Malaysia is ready to collaborate with other APT member states to share innovations and work towards a more inclusive and sustainable digital future. The APT is an intergovernmental organisation established in 1979 under the joint initiative of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and the International Telecommunication Union. Themed Harnessing Emerging Technologies for Sustainable, Inclusive and Equitable Digital Transformation in the Asia-Pacific, this year's meeting is attended by 31 member countries and 19 associate members, comprising government entities, regulators and private sector agencies.

Malaysia shares 5G direction, gives focus on online security at Tokyo event, says Fahmi

TOKYO: Malaysia has shared its experience and direction in implementing dual 5G networks with countries in the Asia Pacific region through its participation in the Asia Pacific Telecommunity Ministerial Meeting (APT-MM) 2025, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. Fahmi, who is leading the country's delegation to APT-MM for the first time from May 30 to 31, said that at the same time, focus was also given to efforts to address online security issues that are a challenge for many countries, as well as the National Digital Network (Jendela) infrastructure programme. "(This) meeting can certainly provide an opportunity for us to bring and show other countries what we have achieved through the programmes and ideas we have. "Our experience in implementing the 5G network first as a single network, then as a dual network and our experience implementing large projects such as Jendela as well as the project point of presence," he told Bernama, here. Fahmi also stressed that there is a need for regulatory bodies from APT member countries to emphasise aspects of online supervision and security, including online gambling and cyber fraud issues in the region. "One of the ideas I put forward is the need for senior officers to meet every year, and it is appropriate to hold a workshop for countries in the Asia Pacific region to state the problems faced and how these issues are resolved. "Perhaps we can share our experiences, lessons, solutions that have been implemented, which can be adopted by other countries," he explained. Also held in conjunction with this meeting were a series of bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Asia Pacific countries, as well as international organisations responsible for the telecommunications industry. During this APT-MM 2025, Fahmi held bilateral meetings with delegations from host Japan, Indonesia, Fiji, China, Iran, Australia, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the GSM Association (GSMA). According to Fahmi, there is a need for agencies such as the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to closely examine the legal aspects and implementation of efforts to regulate online safety, as is done by Australia. "We have conveyed to Australia, and we hope that a team from Malaysia will be able to go there or hold online discussions so that we can examine and evaluate. "Besides the steps they have taken, there are things that we can learn to consider, to see if they are suitable to be implemented in Malaysia," he said. Meanwhile, Malaysia also expressed its intention to continue its membership as a council member in the ITU for the 2027-2030 session. "We have also conveyed to the ministers, counterparts that I have held bilateral meetings with and we hope that friends of Malaysia will be able to support our presence in ITU Council," he added. The APT-MM 2025 edition also saw the launch of the 'Tokyo Statement 2025', which emphasises six priorities: digital connectivity, digital innovation and entrepreneurship, trust and security, digital inclusion and capacity building, environmental sustainability, and regional and international cooperation. Themed "Harnessing Emerging Technologies for Sustainable, Inclusive and Equitable Digital Transformation in the Asia-Pacific', APT-MM 2025 brings together 31 member countries and 19 affiliates comprising governments, regulators and private agencies from the Asia-Pacific region. - Bernama

Julaihi also updated the august House on the Sarawak Linking Urban, Rural and Nation (Saluran) initiative where to date, the state government has allocated RM2.3 billion as an intervention measure to accelerate internet coverage expansion in rural areas under this initiative. 'A key component of Saluran is the construction of Sarawak Multimedia Authority Rural Telecommunication (SMART) towers. 'So far, 585 out of 618 SMART towers have been completed of which 18 of them are repeaters. Of the completed towers, 480 are operational, while the rest will be fully operational in stages by the fourth quarter of 2025,' he said. On the federal government's National Fiberisation and Connectivity Plan (Jendela), Julaihi said a total of 906 out of 909 telecommunications towers have been completed under the initiative's first phase. 'Of this number, 795 towers are operational with 4G services, while the remainder will be fully operational in stages by the fourth quarter of 2025.' He said the federal government, through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in collaboration with the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA), is currently conducting a study to identify coverage gaps and areas requiring improvements in telecommunication services. 'This study will take into account the 'fit for purpose technology' approach, where the selection of technology is based on the suitability of local conditions and needs, such as the construction of telecommunication towers and satellite-based network solutions. 'As of now, the study is in the final stage of evaluation for implementation under the Jendela (National Digital Network) Phase 2 initiative, which is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of this year,' he said. He was responding to a question from Murum assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon during the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today. On coverage specifics, Liwan explained that 4G transmitter sites can typically cover a radius of up to 2km, depending on terrain, while 5G have an optimal coverage radius of up to 500 metres. He also revealed that, to date, a total of 1,591 subscriptions under the Sarawak Rural Broadband Network (MySRBN) have been recorded in the Murum constituency, based on data from the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC).
