Stars Doing Enough to Keep Hellebuyck Off His Game

The results for Connor Hellebuyck have not been as cataclysmic as the opening round against the St. Louis Blues, but the Dallas Stars are doing enough to keep the likely Vezina Trophy winner from finding his stride. Hellebuyck had a Jennings Trophy winning regular season - a trophy given to the goalie tandem with the lowest goals against average - but had a horrendous start to the playoffs. He was pulled in all three road games in St. Louis, but he and his team pulled out the series win in a nearly miraculous Game 7 victory. This round, Hellebuyck has only allowed more than three goals in one of the four games, but has still been on the losing end three times. The Jets only win came in Game 2 when Hellebuyck shut out Dallas. That could have been a turning point for him personally, but the Stars exploded for three third period goals in Game 3 in a 5-2 win that derailed Hellebuyck's progress once again. In Game 4 on Tuesday, he did not see nearly as many shots as his counterpart Jake Oettinger did, and he probably would want the Stars first goal back. It was an unscreened shot from well out, and although Mikael Granlund has a quality wrist shot, it is a save Hellebuyck would likely have made every time in the regular season. Give credit to Dallas. They have not caused chaos like St. Louis has, but individual efforts have been enough to overcome Hellebuyck's effort so far. The Stars were not intimidated after getting shut out, and do not seem to be concerned with how he is playing one way or another. Dallas is playing their game, and so far, it is enough to build a 3-1 lead on Hellebuyck and the Winnipeg Jets. Rangers' Henrik Lundqvist, Devils' Martin Brodeur named to NHL Quarter-Century Team

Who are the top 25 NHL players for the past 25 years? Experts around the league selected them, but fans have had the final say in the second phase of voting for the Quarter-Century team over the past couple of weeks -- and we now have the final results. Advertisement Two local legends were selected to between the pipes -- first ball Hall of Famers Henrik Lundqvist and Martin Brodeur. Lundqvist was a seventh-round pick of the Rangers back in the 2000 Draft -- he took over between the pipes five years later and never looked back, serving as the backbone of numerous deep playoff runs during his 15-year career. He was named to the NHL's First All-Rookie Team after recording 30 wins and a .922 save percentage during his first year in the league. He went on to top that win total in 10 of his 15 seasons with the Blueshirts. Nicknamed 'The King,' he currently ranks sixth in NHL history in wins and is the all-time leader in that category among Swedish-born goaltenders. He's a five-time Vezina Trophy finalist and took home the award once (2011-12). Advertisement 'I am humbled to be a member a this team alongside so many great players,' Lundqvist said in a statement. 'Throughout my career I was fortunate enough to have the support of so many people — family, friends, teammates, coaches, and of course Rangers fans. 'Their love and support helped me play my best and allowed our teams to have the success that we did. I cannot thank them enough for the impact they had, and I share this amazing honor with all of them.' Brodeur spent all but one of his 22 seasons with the Devils. He helped lead them to the Stanley Cup three times, is a seven-time All-Star, five-time Jennings Trophy award winner, and four-time Vezina award winner. The former first-round pick is the NHL's all-time leader in games (1,266), wins (691) and shutouts (125). He also still owns the second-most playoff wins (113) and most playoff shutouts (24) since the turn of the century. Islanders coach Patrick Roy also landed a spot for his domination in net with Colorado.

Three players this season are on the ballot, including Winnipeg Jets' Connor Hellebuyck , Los Angeles Kings' Darcy Kuemper and Tampa Bay Lightning's Andrei Vasilevskiy . Vezina Trophy race heats up with Hellebuyck Kuemper Vasilevskiy in spotlight Connor Hellebuyck has been phenomenal this season and is the odds-on favourite to win the Vezina Trophy for the second year in a row. This would be his third Vezina Trophy and second straight. Connor Hellebuyck has paced the league in almost every significant goaltending category. He paced with 47 wins, the most shutouts with eight and saved 49.48 more goals than he was projected to, which is an astonishing number. His .925 save percentage is the best among the goaltenders who played in 35 games or more. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trending in in 2025: Local network access control [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo This is Connor Hellebuyck's fifth Vezina nomination, and if he gets it again, he'll join some of the all-time greats. Only Martin Brodeur, Patrick Roy, and Dominik Hasek have had three since 1982, when the rules were changed. Along with the Vezina nomination, Connor Hellebuyck won the William M. Jennings Trophy for consecutive years. That award goes to the goalie on the team that has allowed the fewest goals, and the Jets only allowed 190 this year. This was 13 fewer than their closest competitors. Connor Hellebuyck is the first goalie in NHL history to have won the Jennings Trophy alone for consecutive years. Darcy Kuemper and Andrei Vasilevskiy's impeccable campaigns Darcy Kuemper had an exemplary campaign with the Los Angeles Kings. The 34-year-old goaltender closed out the campaign with a record of 31-11-7, along with a.922 save percentage. He also contributed to helping the Kings come second in the Pacific Division. Darcy Kuemper impressed particularly by having the top-ranked high-danger save percentage,.863 in the league. He also reached his career best five shutouts this season. Andrei Vasilevskiy, the Tampa Bay Lightning's All-Star goalie, also bounced back this season from a poor 2023-24. Andrei Vasilevskiy was 38-20-5 with a.921 save percentage and 28.84 GSAx. He started slowly but finished strong with the NHL-leading save percentage since Dec. 1. That was a textbook welcome back for Andrei Vasilevskiy, who had to contend with a back problem in his previous season. Jets remain confident in Vezina Trophy winner Connor Hellebuyck despite NHL playoff struggles

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Winnipeg goaltender Connor Hellebuyck's NHL playoff struggles continued Sunday in St. Louis as the two-time Vezina Trophy winner surrendered five goals before being pulled in the third period for the second straight game as the Jets fell to the St. Louis Blues 5-1 to even their first round series at 2-all. Despite questions from pundits and the jeers from the hostile St. Louis crowd, the Jets haven't lost faith in their four-time All Star. 'I'm 100% confident in Connor Hellebuyck,' Jets coach Scott Arniel said after Game 4 on Sunday. 'His resume speaks for itself.' Jets defenseman Luke Schenn echoed his coach's sentiment. 'Lots of confidence,' Schenn said. 'He's had an unbelievable year, and you watch the replay of the goals that went in. They're deflections, they're screens, they're bouncing off us and in, and just, obviously, we've got to do a better job in front of the net.' During the regular season, Hellebuyck has been of the NHL's elite goaltenders with a .937 save percentage and a 2.24 goals against average that was good enough to help Hellebuyck and the Jets win the Jennings Trophy for having the lowest team GAA in the league. However, the playoffs over that timeframe have been a much different story. Hellebuyck has allowed at least four goals in 10 of 14 playoff games and has been pulled in back-to-back games for just the second time in his career including the regular season. Winnipeg has held leads in three of the four games this series, and St. Louis has not made Hellebuyck's life easy. 'It comes down to one-on-one battles,' Schenn said. 'We have to do a better job. Everyone doing a better job of making sure Helly's seeing the puck and obviously they're getting sticks on it and they're screening him, doing a pretty good job (at that). At the end of the day, this time of year, that's where games are won and lost.' Despite some adverse circumstances, Arniel was adamant that the entire team can take its game up a notch. 'At the end of the day, we need to be better in front of him,' Arniel said. 'There's things that we have to do to help him. He knows he has to do things that help us. And that's how it's been all year long.' Winnipeg hosts St. Louis in Game 5 of their first round series Wednesday night. ___ AP NHL playoffs: and
