Ohio State Star Jeremiah Smith Reveals Just How Close He Was To Joining Miami Hurricanes
Ohio State star receiver Jeremiah Smith revealed this week just how close he was to taking his talents to the Miami Hurricanes two years ago. Jeremiah Smith took college football by storm in 2024 as a true freshman for the Buckeyes. In his first season in the Big Ten, the wide receiver led the team not just in yards (1,315) but also touchdowns (15) on just 76 catches. Ohio State does not win a National Championship last season without the young star. However, things could have been different. Although OSU was a favorite to land him in 2023, the Hurricanes were reportedly a serious contender to win his recruiting sweepstakes. On Tuesday, Smith revealed to On3 just how close he got to taking his talents to Miami two years ago. Jeremiah Smith stats: 76 catches, 1,315 receiving yards, 15 touchdowns, 17.3 yards per catch 'What went into me taking a long time to send my NIL was people on the business side of things. That night [that he sent his paperwork in], I definitely talked to Cam Ward. Thought about something… I didn't really tell him [that he was choosing OSU]. We just got on the phone, and he was like, 'What you gonna do?' And I was like, 'I don't know.' Then, a couple of hours later, I sent the NIL in.' Jeremiah Smith NIL value: $4.2 million Smith admits he has not talked to Ward since he made his decision. However, he does not believe the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft and new Tennessee Titans QB holds any grudges. The Hurricanes had an outstanding offense in 2024 and posted a 10-3 record. Many in Miami believe that if Smith had committed to the program, they would have reached the college football playoffs and had a chance to compete for a National title. Ohio State fans are very happy he did not choose South Beach over Columbus. Ohio State football coach Ryan Day talks at Big Ten media days: Key takeaways
LAS VEGAS – Big Ten media days represent the unofficial start of Ohio State's football season, and both the promise and the youth of the Buckeyes are obvious. Usually, teams bring seniors as their three player representatives to media days. Day brought one senior – linebacker Sonny Styles – as well as junior safety Caleb Downs and sophomore wide receiver Jeremiah Smith. Styles is a senior, but he's the age of a junior because he reclassified to enroll in 2022. Ohio State coach Ryan Day told Big Ten reporters that Buckeyes wide receiver Jeremiah Smith is even "bigger, stronger and faster" this season. 'As we were checking into the hotel,' Day said, 'the woman behind the desk said, 'Is there someone 21 who can check these three guys in?' I said, 'I'll do it,' because Caleb and Sonny are 20 and Jeremiah is 19.' Since spring practice, the Buckeyes have tried to begin establishing their own identity. It must happen quickly. The much-anticipated season-opener against Texas is 39 days away. More: Ohio State athletic director Ross Bjork talks football title, Ryan Day and more 'The team we have currently wants to leave their own legacy,' Day said. 'They've made that clear. We've said before that we're not defending national champions because we're not defending anything. They can't take the trophy away, but we're looking to add to it and winning a championship with this team.' Advertisement In his remarks at the lecturn, Day addressed several issues, including the quarterback competition between Julian Sayin and Lincoln Kienholz. Here are some other takeaways: Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith looks even better Smith lived up to his lofty billing as the top player in the 2024 recruiting class. He caught 76 passes for 1,315 yards and 15 touchdown. His 56-yard catch on third-and-11 at the end of the national championship game against Notre Dame all but sealed the title. 'He's gotten bigger, stronger and faster than he was last year,' Day said. Day said strength coach Mickey Marotti said Smith is the first to complete warmup drills 'every single time. He has set such a standard that you don't need to motivate him. Advertisement 'What he did as a freshman speaks for itself. He may not be an older guy. He may not be really vocal, for instance, but what he does on the field speaks for itself, and the work ethic he's brought into this year has been exceptional.' Coach Ryan Day optimistic about OSU defense Ohio State lost eight starters and coordinator Jim Knowles from the country's top defense. Former New England Patriots coordinator Matt Patricia has replaced Knowles, though Day said Patricia has not hired to overhaul the defense. Buy Ohio State posters, books, gear from CFP title win 'We want to keep that continuity,' Day said. 'We want to run the Ohio State defense and Matt was willing to embrace that. Matt has his own background and things he likes, and one of the things he does a great job of is putting guys in situations to be successful. Advertisement 'He'll have his little different changes, but we want to keep the structure of what we've done in the past. I'm fired up. I think Matt has done a great job of building relationships already.' Ryan Day on Brian Hartline and how much the Ohio State offense will change in 2025 Brian Hartline takes over for Chip Kelly as Ohio State's offensive coordinator. Unlike Patricia, Hartline is not new to Ohio State. The receivers coach was also the coordinator in 2023, though he didn't call plays. Now he's expected to, but like with Patricia, Day doesn't want major changes with Hartline as coordinator. 'It'll be very similar,' Day said of the 2025 offense. 'We've tried to keep the offense the same over these last nine years. We've all worked together for a while. Brian and I have worked together since the jump on this. Advertisement 'Brian's strength is the passing game, and I think he's really grown from a really good player to a really good coach. The next progression is to become a really good coordinator.' Ohio State Football Makes Big Ryan Day Announcement
Ohio State Football Makes Big Ryan Day Announcement originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Ohio State Buckeyes are coming off a remarkable run in the first-ever 12-team College Football Playoff, entering as the No. 8 seed and winning four straight games by double digits. Their path to the national championship included impressive victories over Tennessee, Oregon, Texas, and ultimately Notre Dame in the title game. Advertisement The victory marked Ohio State's first national championship since 2014 and the first under head coach Ryan Day—an especially meaningful moment given that it came just weeks after another disappointing loss to Michigan, which had many fans in Columbus calling for a change at the helm. Day, however, rallied the Buckeyes to a historic postseason, and now Ohio State is looking to carry that momentum into the 2025 season in hopes of a back-to-back title run. Ahead of the upcoming season, Ohio State made a major announcement on Friday and followed it up with a behind-the-scenes reveal on Saturday: Head coach Ryan Day will be featured in 'EA Sports College Football 26.' Advertisement 'Something special to be a part of,' Ohio State posted on social media, sharing an image of Day alongside star safety Caleb Downs. Day's star wide receiver, Jeremiah Smith, is set to be featured on the cover of EA Sports College Football 26, alongside Alabama sophomore wideout Ryan Williams. The cover was officially unveiled last week, building anticipation for the game's release, which is scheduled for July 10. Advertisement After that, the franchise was discontinued due to legal issues surrounding player likeness rights. However, with the emergence of NIL rules and the rapidly evolving landscape of college athletics, the series made a highly successful comeback. College Football 25 became one of the most popular releases of 2024, even surpassing NBA 2K21 to become the highest-selling sports video game in the United States. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes skyrocket in updated recruiting rankings
The Ohio State Buckeyes are the reigning national champions and have a top-10 recruiting class nationally. They also boast arguably the top two players in all of college football with wide receiver Jeremiah Smith and safety Caleb Downs. Advertisement But Ryan Day's program received even more good news Monday, as On3/Rivals updated their class of 2026 player ratings. Two future Buckeyes made the "biggest risers" list - and both are now among the nation's top prospects. Previously the nation's No. 96 overall prospect, Archbishop Hoban (Ohio) offensive tackle Sam Greer jumped to No. 14 - a staggering jump that will make him a five-star recruit on Signing Day. But that wasn't all. Juniperro Serra (California) edge-rusher Khary Wilder was "not rated" in the previous ratings, but jumped all the way up to No. 38 overall. Advertisement Several programs saw a commit or two jump up the list, including Notre Dame, Georgia, Oregon, Florida State and others, but no program has more to celebrate than Ohio State. The Buckeyes are, once again, reloading with the 2026 class.
