Revealed: The unique meaning behind two tiny details on footy heartthrob Bailey Smith's uniform
Geelong star Bailey Smith has opened up about the unique messages he writes on his footy boots before games, offering an insight into the Brownlow Medal favourite's mindset. Smith, known for his style on and off the pitch, captured the attention of Channel 7's Brian Taylor before Sunday's match against West Coast. 'This man here, Bailey Smith, he's talking the talk, but he's walking the walk to go with it,' Taylor said as the camera zoomed in to the midfielder's boots. 'Have a look at that: 'spartan' and 'take souls'. 'Take souls' - I've done a bit of investigating - has sort of a loose meaning, but it means you're so incredible at what you do that it forces other people to respect you, that's what 'take souls' means. 'That's a man full of confidence.' Footy legend Nick Riewoldt chimed in: 'Oh yeah, absolutely - and he's backing it up. 'One of the best players in the competition at the moment.' Smith was interviewed after the match and explained that he's been writing on his boots for a while. 'I just write on them every week, so nothing new,' he told Seven. 'Just (to) keep me in the present, keep me in the moment, that's about it.' The star midfielder racked up a season-high 38 disposals and Jeremy Cameron kicked four final-quarter goals as Geelong avoided a major boilover in a 43-point win over West Coast at Optus Stadium. The Cats led by just seven points early in the final quarter of Sunday night's match, and Eagles forward Noah Long had the chance to close the margin to one point with his 35m set shot. But Long's miss proved costly, with Geelong kicking seven of the next eight goals to secure the 17.14 (116) to 11.7 (73) win. Cameron was restricted to one goal across the first three quarters under the tight attention of Reuben Ginbey, but the star forward exploded late to blow out the margin. Smith tallied five clearances, one goal and 834m gained to go with his 38 disposals. He already had 25 disposals to his name by halftime before a tight tag from Brady Hough slowed him somewhat. Max Holmes (27 disposals, seven clearances) was also influential for Geelong, who improved their season record to 8-4. 'He just kept getting the ball early,' Geelong coach Chris Scott said of Smith. 'I thought he and Holmes were really penetrating.'

Unfiltered: Geelong premiership hero Jeremy Cameron opens up on ‘worst game' of his career
Geelong premiership hero Jeremy Cameron has opened up on the 'worst game' of his life that helped shaped his career. Cameron has been one of the AFL's best players since making his debut for the GWS Giants in their first ever game way back in 2012. The superstar forward kicked 62 goals in his second season as a 20-year-old to make the All-Australian team. While he had already announced himself as a start of the competition after that incredible season, it was a game in 2016 that Cameron highlights as the turning point in his career. The Giants finished the season in fourth place before stunning minor premiers Sydney in the qualifying final to book a home preliminary final. Cameron kicked 4.4 in that win over the Swans, but had just two kicks in his next match as the Giants fell to the Western Bulldogs in an instant classic. It was only the fifth time in four seasons he had been goalless and came at the worst possible time. The Dogs would go on to win the premiership the following week, which hurt Cameron even more. 'I believe that that game is a big turning point for me in my career,' Cameron tells Hamish McLachlan on Unfiltered. 'I rate it as the worst game I've ever played. I've played four or five years up to that stage, I know better to go out there and just have no impact on what was a massive game, I think that's what hurt me the most. 'It's probably the only game I've sat back and thought about long and hard. 'It was a good turning point for me, I wanted to come back and have a genuine off-season and work hard. 'That was one where I'm like, 'I'm going to go overboard here and come back fitter than ever because I want 2017 better than last year'. 'I'm sure a lot of boys thought the same. I hated that game and I hated watching on to see what happened afterwards as well.' After 171 games in nine years at the Giants, Cameron moved to Geelong at the end of the 2020 season. But if it wasn't for the covid lockdowns, then Cameron may have continued his career at GWS. 'It's a tricky question. Honestly, I probably still would be back up there if I had to put my money somewhere,' he said.

AFL 2025: Geelong star Tyson Stengle does not expect teammates to engage with Port Adelaide's Willie Rioli
Geelong star Tyson Stengle is backing his teammates to not sledge Port Adelaide forward Willie Rioli when the Cats and Power meet this Saturday. Rioli sat out Port Adelaide's narrow Showdown loss after he was found to have threatened several opponents across the past 12 months. One of those incidents occurred against Geelong when Rioli had a fiery encounter with Cat Brad Close last season. The interaction prompted an uncharacteristically aggravated response from laconic spearhead Jeremy Cameron. But Stengle doesn't expect any ill will between the two sides on Saturday and hopes to see Rioli back playing. 'I hope that he's out there, he's a great player, so hopefully he can get out there and play some good footy this week. It will be great to see him play,' Stengle said. 'I don't really know the situation … I don't think they will (engage with Rioli), I think they'll want him to be playing this week. 'He's one of their better players, so it would be great to see him out there.' Stengle's stance follows Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley last week expressing doubt any opposition players 'would go there' with Rioli. 'I would doubt anyone would go there with the stance the AFL has put in place around comments said on the field, I just don't think you would go there,' Hinkley said. 'Willie will get our support like he always has and Willie also has to learn. 'He knows that and he has publicly said that, he has to get better.' Geelong, which also narrowly lost at the weekend, could drift out of the top eight if it doesn't beat the Power.
