Carlos Correa trade: Houston Astros to reacquire star in blockbuster deal with Minnesota Twins ahead of MLB deadline
The Minnesota Twins are trading shortstop Carlos Correa back to the Houston Astros, in a jaw-dropping move hours before the 2025 MLB trade deadline, according to reports. This blockbuster deal sees the former All-Star waive his no-trade clause and agree to play third base alongside Jeremy Pena, marking a stunning reunion with the team he helped lead to a 2017 World Series title. Carlos Correa's contract, with $91.5 million owed from 2026 to 2028 and vesting options through 2032, posed a challenge. The Twins, navigating an ownership transition, are expected to absorb part of the salary to facilitate the trade, easing Houston's luxury tax concerns. This financial maneuver aligns with Minnesota's strategy to reduce payroll while Houston strengthens its roster for a postseason push. Carlos Correa, a three-time All-Star and 2015 AL Rookie of the Year with the Astros, is currently with the Minnesota Twins. He has underperformed in 2025, posting a .267/.319/.386 slash line with 7 home runs in 93 games. This is a noticeable dip from his 2024 season, where he hit .310/.388/.517 in 86 games despite injuries. Carlos Correa, 30, was the face of the Houston Astros' golden era from 2015 to 2021, earning Rookie of the Year honors and two All-Star nods. His return will address a critical need for Houston, as third baseman Isaac Paredes faces a season-ending hamstring injury. Correa's willingness to shift positions highlights his commitment to winning, reigniting Astros fans' hopes for another championship run. The Astros also added left-handed outfielder Jesus Sanchez from the Miami Marlins to their lineup, adding power and control through 2027.

Astros' IL woes continue with latest injury move
The post Astros' IL woes continue with latest injury move appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Houston Astros are one of the best teams in baseball and are 1.5 games back of having the best record. The Astros are winning games despite not having some of their best players available. After their latest injury move, the Astros now have a league-leading 18 players on the IL, more than the Los Angeles Dodgers. On Friday, the Astros placed left-handed starter Brandon Walter on the IL. He joins Luis Garcia, Lance McCullers Jr., Cristian Javier, J.P. France, Spencer Arrighetti, Shawn Dubin, Ronel Blanco, Hayden Wesneski, and Glenn Otto on the IL as just pitchers. The Astros also have some of their best talent on the IL offensively. Yordan Alvarez, Jeremy Pena, Isaac Paredes, and Jake Meyers are also on the IL. Despite this, Houston is 60-43 and leading the AL West by five games over the Seattle Mariners. Walter has started nine games for the Astros this season. In those nine games, he has won only one of them, but has pitched well and improved as he went on. Walter has a 3.35 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, 52 strikeouts, and only four walks on the season. He pitched so great that his WAR reached 1.4 in just nine appearances. In his last outing, Walter allowed just one run on four hits in 7.0 innings pitched. He allowed just four runs in his last three starts combined. The Astros are losing a great young pitcher with elbow inflammation. It's unclear at this time how long he will be on the injured list. It won't be easy with all the injuries, but Framber Valdez and Hunter Brown must hold down the fort for as long as possible. Colton Gordon will have a significantly improved role, and so will Ryan Gusto. But those two can't be relied on to win games on their own. Look for the Astros to consider trading for a starter to provide needed depth as the MLB Trade Deadline approaches. Manager Joe Espada's squad is more than capable of winning another World Series. But if they want that to be the reality, then they need to get healthier. Fresh off halting skid, Astros chase series victory vs. Nationals
July 30 - With All-Star shortstop Jeremy Pena starting a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sugar Land and outfielders Yordan Alvarez and Jake Meyers continuing to ramp up baseball activities, the Astros are inching closer to having several starters back from the injured list. Until those front-line performers return, the Astros will need more of the balanced attack they received in their 7-4 interleague win over the Washington Nationals on Tuesday. The victory snapped a five-game losing streak and set the table for a series rubber match Wednesday afternoon in Houston. Eight different Astros recorded hits, and Houston finished 5-for-15 with runners in scoring position on Tuesday. Given all of the absentees, it was the sort of collective effort Houston required. "There are so many young players that we need them to do the things they're doing," Astros manager Joe Espada said. "They're learning, they're grinding." Rookie right-hander Ryan Gusto (6-4, 5.18 ERA) is scheduled to start the series finale for the Astros. It will mark his 14th start and 24th appearance overall; Gusto is 5-4 with a 5.85 ERA as a starter. He allowed a season-high eight runs on eight hits and one walk with five strikeouts over 3 1/3 innings in a 15-3 loss to the Athletics on Friday. Gusto made three consecutive relief outings before that start. Gusto will make his first appearance against the Nationals. He is 2-1 with a 4.24 ERA in six career interleague outings, including three starts. The series finale against the Nationals will mark the end of the Astros' seven-game homestand. Houston will begin a nine-game road trip on Friday in Boston following a much-needed off day. "Trying to win series, that's the goal," Espada said. "Gusto, we need him to go out there and give us a solid outing. We need that off day, and we'd love to make it a happy flight." Left-hander MacKenzie Gore (4-10, 3.52 ERA) will start for the Nationals on Wednesday. Gore has allowed three earned runs on 11 hits and 10 walks with 17 strikeouts across 17 innings in his last three road starts, including a 1-0 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Friday, when he surrendered one run on one hit with six walks and four strikeouts in five innings. Gore has just one win over his last eight starts, going 1-5 with a 4.68 ERA. He is 0-1 with a 2.79 ERA in two career starts against the Astros. He lost 5-3 on April 19, 2024, after he allowed three runs, seven hits and one walk with four strikeouts over four innings. The Nationals endured a sub-optimal bullpen performance on Tuesday, one game after Konnor Pilkington, Luis Garcia, Jose Ferrer and Kyle Finnegan combined for a lockdown effort. Veteran pitchers should offer the inexperienced relievers room for growth. "We've got a good mix right now in the bullpen with some veterans and some young pitchers," Nationals interim manager Miguel Cairo said. "They've been taking advantage of having Finnegan, (Andrew) Chafin and now Garcia. This is the time for them to learn how to be a competitor." --Field Level Media

Astros' Jeremy Pena nears return in latest injury update
The Houston Astros have run into an injury bug while experiencing a midseason slump in the week of the MLB trade deadline. Key players who are currently rehabbing injuries on the injury list include outfielder Yordan Alvarez, third baseman Isaac Paredes, as well as pitchers Cristian Javier and shortstop Jeremy Pena. Heading into the Astros series against the Washington Nationals on Monday, Houston was able to give an update on Jeremy Pena, who's been rehabbing a small rib fracture he sustained after getting hit by a pitch against the Chicago Cubs on June 27. According to The Athletic's Chandler Rome, Pena hit against live pitching at the Astros' Florida Complex over the weekend and will be returning to practice in Houston before their series against the Nationals. This is great for the Astros as they haven't been able to find the same success in July as they did in previous months. They have a record of 10-12 this month. Before Jeremy Pena went down with the injury, he was having the best season of his young career. He was elected as a 2025 All-Star while posting a .322 batting average, .278 on-base percentage, .867 OPS, and 4.5 WAR, hitting 11 home runs and 40 RBI through 82 games this season. Houston hasn't made a set time for Pena to return to the lineup, but he's expected to come back before the end of the month.
