Jersey postal workers travel 1,400km for Island Games

Two Jersey postal workers have set off to deliver kit for athletes at the Island Games in Payne and Alan Tardivel said they would be driving delivery vans more than 1,400km (869 miles) over two days to get bikes and other equipment to the Island Games, which starts on Tardivel, who has worked for Jersey Post for 44 years, said: "I thought this was an ideal opportunity to do something completely different, and something I am going to enjoy, and I can look back on being part of the Island Games."The week-long event will see athletes from up to 24 island groups compete in 12 sports on the Scottish island. Mr Tardivel said they would arrive in Portsmouth on Thursday and then travel to Payne said: "Friday morning, it is an early start and from Perth we have to travel to Thurso which is at the top of Scotland...""Then we will get another ferry early afternoon on Friday and we will travel up to Orkney," said Mr Payne, who has worked for the postal company for 17 years."From there we will arrive in Stromness, down to Kirkwall with all the gear ready for the Island Games to begin on Saturday."Mr Tardivel said he was taking part because he enjoyed sport and he was coming up to retirement at Jersey Post. Toby, who has been part of the Island Games three times as a team driver, added: "I am looking forward to the drive and it's somewhere different."I have never been to that part of Scotland before or the Orkney islands so it's good to be involved with the Island Games and help these aspiring athletes to achieve their best."Hopefully team Jersey can win plenty of gold medals."We want to wish all the best to all of the athletes taking part in the Island Games and especially the Jersey team."

Jersey Post delivers £700k profit on £81.6m sales

Jersey Post delivered an £81.6m turnover last year, with a £700,000 profit before tax. This reverses a £900,000 loss in 2023 for the company, which employs 560 people in the Channel Islands and the UK, including 360 in Jersey. The company sold off its two US businesses and digital management company Vaiie and "refocused" on core markets of postal, freight and international, and cut overheads to restore financial stability, according to the 2024 annual report. Chief executive Mark Siviter warned it continued to face challenges, particularly with the "clear and irreversible" decline in letters, which had seen a 30% decrease since 2021. More news stories for Jersey Listen to the latest news for Jersey He said this was despite the decision to hold local and UK stamp prices this year. The company's turnover in 2024 was 2% lower than the previous year, which the company said was due to lower sales in its global logistics division. Mr Siviter added: "The strategy to build a diversified business based on a global network of companies has not succeeded." Instead it is focusing on core markets. He said: "The markets we operate in are highly competitive with traditionally low margins, scale is required to deliver material returns." Follow BBC Jersey on X and Facebook. Jersey hosts global gathering of post experts

More than 40 delegates from islands and small countries around the world have been in Jersey to discuss ways to improve postal services. It was the first time Jersey Post has hosted the Small Posts and Islands Postal Forum. The event brought together representatives from similarly sized countries and islands to talk about shared challenges. Randall Robinson, who represented Grenada Postal Corporation at the forum, said: "Working together we find there are solutions that you can take back and implement." Mr Robinson added: "Sometimes you don't recognise that there are other people in the same boat. "We're still very manual and when we see all the automated processes we realise there is some work to do but our people have been doing it for a long time and they're good at what they do." Sven Kukumelk from Omniva – Estonia's postal service – said there were similarities between his organisation and Jersey Post. He said: "I was surprised about the level of infrastructure here, when I went to the Jersey Post warehouse it very homely." Mr Kukumelk added: "We have robots delivering parcels and everything is automated so it's good to share our developments with others." Thorhildur Helgadottir, from Iceland Post, said islands found they faced similar issues with postal services. "We're all quite similar so we're all struggling with similar issues," she said. "We have 93% decrease in letters over the last few years so that hurt but we're increasing the parcel industry in Iceland so we're sharing that with others." Derek Osborn founded the forum and helped Jersey Post organise this year's event. He said: "I started this because there are plenty of events for big postal organisations. "But those from small postal groups would go along and find there was nothing for them." "The industry has evolved since we started this and letters are declining so we're constantly facing challenges but getting everyone together to compare the challenges is very useful," Mr Osborn added. Tom Wasilewski, from Jersey Post, invited the forum to the island and opened the event with a speech on strategy and business operations. He said: "It's very reassuring to hear that the challenges we're facing in this island are shared across the world." Mr Wasilewski added: "We are part of the international and global postal community and it's important we learn from others and we don't take an island mentality and be isolationist."
