Netflix is losing 'Sonic 2' in just a few days — here's your last day to stream this fast-paced family action movie
Netflix is about to lose a great family action-adventure movie, as "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" is scheduled to leave the streaming service in just a few days' time. After Sonic's silver-screen debut defied everyone's expectations, racing to box office success and winning approval from fans, the video game adaptation's sequel arrived — fittingly, in rather speedy fashion — just two years later in 2022. It was a bigger, wilder affair, and one that brought more of Sonic's pals to the big screen. If you and the family were planning to stream his second adventure on Netflix, you'd better do it soon, as "Sonic 2" is leaving Netflix on July 28. That means your last day to stream "Sonic 2" on Netflix is Sunday, July 27. If that news has you considering whether to push "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" to the top of your watchlist or not, here's a little bit more info about the Blue Blur's second big-screen outing to help you make up your mind. Having kicked Dr. Robotnik's (Jim Carrey) butt and banished him to a mushroom planet in the first movie, "Sonic 2" sees Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) determined to prove he has the stuff to be a true hero. After Tom and Maddie (James Marsden and Tika Sumpter) leave him in charge of the house to go away for a wedding, Sonic's chance arrives: Robotnik is back with a vengeance, with Knuckles the Echidna (Idris Elba) in tow. The pair seek the Master Emerald, and, with the help of Tails (Colleen O'Shaughnessy), the Blue Blur and his sidekick set out to find the emerald before it falls into the wrong hands. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. In addition to the above names, "Sonic 2" also stars Lee Majdoub, Natasha Rothwell, Shemar Moore, Adam Pally, and more. I'm a firm fan of the entire "Sonic" trilogy. All three movies are solid, fast-paced watches that boast action and laughs fit for the whole family. "Sonic 2," specifically, was what a sequel to the "Sonic" movie needed to be: an improvement on what had come before, boasting bigger action and more daft antics befitting Sega's speedster, and Jim Carrey's elastic turn as Sonic's nemesis proved to be dream casting once more. And, as incongruous as it may be to hear Idris Elba's voice coming out of Knuckles the Echidna's mouth, he proved a winning addition, and getting to see Schwartz's speedster racing around with him and his best pal Miles "Tails" Power was a blast. It won't be the best movie you'll ever stream, but if you're looking for fun, high-octane family entertainment (and you liked Sonic's first feature outing), "Sonic" 2 should fit the bill. Critics, to be clear, didn't love "Sonic" 2. At the time of writing, the movie's sitting at 69% (from over 180 reviews) on the review aggregate site, Rotten Tomatoes, with a consensus that reads: "It isn't as much fun as the little blue guy's greatest games, but if you enjoyed the first film, "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" serves as a generally acceptable sequel." The Guardian's Leslie Felperin gave "Sonic 2" 3 stars and said: "There's not very much to say about it, other than it's mildly amusing and reasonably competently assembled." THR's Justin Lowe, meanwhile, called the movie "frantic fun," writing: "Overstuffed with frantic action and framed by Sonic's wisecracking commentary, "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" will appeal to family audiences seeking holiday distractions." Reviewing at Variety, Peter Debruge found it fun, but queried the runtime: "At two hours and change, 'Sonic 2' wears out its welcome well before it turns into yet another phone-it-in franchise entry — the kind where storms gather, a column of fluorescent light shoots up to the sky and everything becomes apocalyptic." Nevertheless, fans definitely rate the movie way higher (we're talking 96% on the Popcornmeter levels of approval), and absolutely agree that yes, the second trip to Green Hills was absolutely worth taking. So, yes, you should stream "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" on Netflix before it leaves the streamer on July 27. Still not convinced? We can still help you find something new to stream. Opinion: it'll probably be terrible, but we still can't wait for the Out Run movie
Gaming Video game adaptions are usually bad. But could the Out Run movie defy expectations? Skip 1 photos in the image carousel and continue reading It's been a bit of a red letter month for me, or perhaps more accurately a red Testarossa month. News recently broke that fresh off the back of the Sonic the Hedgehog movies, which generated a billion dollars and introduced a whole new generation of kids to Jim Carrey's hypermobile face, Sega's next Hollywood project is going to be a movie based on legendary arcade racing game Out Run . This appeals to me on two counts. Firstly I'm a huge fan of the original video game, and secondly, I find bad movies just as entertaining as good ones. Yes I'm aware there's something wrong with me. Advertisement - Page continues below Alright, we don't know for sure the Out Run movie will be terrible. It'll feature talented Euphoria and White Lotus star Sydney Sweeney, who is also a producer on the project, and Michael Bay has been attached to direct. Regardless of how you feel about the dizzying CGI washing machine that is the Transformers franchise, if you've seen his 1996 movie The Rock you'll know the man can direct a Ferrari car chase. The problem is, describing the Out Run game as light on plot is like describing War and Peace as 'a bit long'. There is a start line, a finish line, and you are compelled to drive between the two by the immaculate summer roadtrip vibes. With such a thin premise, the writers of the movie are going to feel obliged to introduce things like shadowy criminal gangs, a soupçon of personal tragedy and an irritating comic relief character just to keep the story moving along. You might like The Need for Speed movie released in 2014 took that approach and disappeared mostly without a trace, even though it starred Breaking Bad 's Aaron Paul and, thanks to its exceptionally crashy race sequences, featured more irretrievably ruined supercars than the car park at Mansory. Sony's Gran Turismo tie-in movie avoided the cliches only because it was a film less about the content of the game itself and more about the real life winner of the GT Academy competition Jann Mardenborough. And even then it threw in an incongruous Grand Theft Auto- inspired police chase that implied the otherwise clean-cut Jann should have spent the second half of the film in a local magistrate's court rather than at a racetrack. Advertisement - Page continues below Look, I've seen enough dire video game adaptations to know that, statistically, the Out Run movie will almost certainly be a disaster, if it makes it to cinema screens at all. Still I can't help being just a little excited for the prospect of a sun-kissed road movie based on one of the most influential racing games of all time. Shows like The Last of Us and Fallout have demonstrated these days Hollywood has an improved understanding of what makes video games tick. And if the worst comes to the worst, I'll happily waste 112 minutes sitting in the dark drooling over a Ferrari Testarossa. In fact that's been a fairly standard evening for me since the age of six. Jim Carrey reveals role that was 'like torture' but he'd like to play again
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Jim Carrey has revealed his desire to revisit a beloved character "one more time". The comedian, known for a huge variety of memorable roles ranging from the everyman Truman Burbank in The Truman Show to the darkly intriguing lead in The Cable Guy, has a particular part that resonates with him. At 62, Jim, who had previously hinted at retirement, decided to step back into the Sonic the Hedgehog series. Jim returned as Doctor Robotnik in the third film based on SEGA's iconic video game character, despite having indicated that his involvement in the sequel would be his final role. The star, celebrated for performances in hits like Yes Man, Bruce Almighty, and Liar Liar, has now divulged which character he's keen to play again. In a recent chat, Jim was asked "Is there any one character that you'd love an opportunity to play one more time?" Jim seemed momentarily taken aback, uttering "gosh," before revealing his choice, reports the Mirror US. (Image: PA) Admirers of the festive favourite 'The Grinch' will be thrilled, as Carrey seems open to donning the green suit again. He said: "If we could figure out The Grinch. That'd be difficult." While crafting a follow-up to Ron Howard's yuletide blockbuster might pose challenges, the interviewer humorously suggested that someone would "try and figure it out now". Jim added: "You know, the thing about it is, is that on the day I had to do that with a ton of makeup and I could hardly breathe and I went, you know, it was an extremely excruciating process. The children were in my mind all the time. 'It's for the kids, for the kids, the kids.' "And now with motion capture and things like that, I could be free to do some other things. But, you know, anything's possible in this world. Anything's possible." Jim has talked openly about his difficulties portraying The Grinch, admitting in past interviews that he underwent CIA training to endure breathing in the costume. He even considered walking away from the 2003 film until Oscar-winning producer Brian Grazer intervened. Brian introduced Jim, who felt as though he was "buried alive" in the suit, to a CIA contact. On his first day, Jim revealed that getting into the suit took "eight-and-a-half hours" after which he returned to his trailer and "put [his] leg through the wall" in frustration. (Image: Liverpool Echo) In his book A Curious Mind: The Secret to a Bigger Life, Grazer recounts, "One of the CIA people I'd talked to years before specialized in training US agents to survive torture if they were captured. We had an actor being held prisoner by his costume - he was being tortured by his makeup." In an interview with chat show presenter Graham Norton, Jim Carrey spoke candidly about his daunting experience while filming The Grinch. He revealed that a mix of breathing exercises and a smoking habit saw him through the challenging shoot. Jim admitted: "If you're freaking out and spiralling downward, turn the television on, change a pattern, or have someone you know come up and smack you in the head, punch yourself in the leg, or smoke - smoke as much as you possibly can." His methods clearly paid off, as the film is now considered a timeless favourite, and fans are eager to see if he might don the Grinch's costume once more.
