The first instalment is due on Good Friday on March 26, 2027 and the second on Ascension Day on May 6, 2027. The news was revealed in a post on Instagram which gave the release dates. Original cast members Maia Morgenstern and Francesco De Vito will also be returning. Gibson has been working on the sequel for many years and previously spoke about the difficulties he was facing in his attempts to bring the story to the big screen. During an appearance on EWTN's The World Over YouTube show, he explained: "Well it's a huge subject, and it's not a linear narrative so that in order to have it mean something and resonate for almost anybody that watches it ... "You have to juxtapose the central event that I'm trying to tell with everything else around it in the future, in the past, and in other realms, and that's kind of getting a little sci-fi out there. "It's a big story, it's a difficult concept and it's taken me a long time to focus and find a way to tell that story and really delivers to someone who may not know anything about the central story ... The Resurrection of the Christ Split Into 2 Movies, Release Dates Set

Mel Gibson's The Resurrection of the Christ has been split into two movies, with the release dates for both officially set by Lionsgate. When are The Resurrection of the Christ release dates? The Resurrection of the Christ Part One will officially release in theaters on March 16, 2027, which is Good Friday. 40 days later, Part Two will release, on May 6, 2027, Ascension Day. For those unaware, Good Friday is a Christian holy day commemorating the crucifixion and death of Jesus. Ascension Day, also known as the Feast of the Ascension of Jesus Christ or Holy Thursday, is another holy day commemorating the Christian belief of the Ascension of Jesus into Heaven. It's unclear exactly how the two movies will be split, but given their release dates, it seems likely the first part will deal with Jesus' resurrection following his crucifixion. The sequels will once again be directed by Gibson, with Jim Caviezel reprising his role as Jesus. The Oscar-winning director previously teased that he has co-written two different scripts for the project, with the first one described as 'an acid trip' that will take audiences to 'other realms.' At the moment, it currently has no official release date or distributor. The Passion of the Christ depicted the final days of Jesus Christ's life and his crucifixion. It also starred Maia Morgenstern as Mary, Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalene, Francesco De Vito as Peter, Luca Lionello as Judas, and more. Despite receiving mixed reviews, the film was still a commercial success. It earned a worldwide gross of $612 million against a reported budget of around $30 million.
