S.F is lining up for coffee from a Warriors star. Is it worth it?

It may have been noon on a Monday, but the vibe inside San Francisco's Bigface Coffee popup was like a VIP-only party. Customers covered in expensive streetwear mingled with coffee cups in hand, phones in the other, as a DJ blasted hip hop party anthems. Outside, there was a growing line down 22nd Street. Then, all eyes turned toward the door as Jimmy Butler III — the Golden State Warriors' star and Bigface's owner — entered the building. Bigface has settled in for a two-week popup at 1100 Valencia St., where digital payment company Square runs an events and customer support hub. The otherwise minimal space, best known as the longtime home of Lucca Ravioli, is now blasted with Ferrari red accents bearing Bigface's branding in all caps. The engagement, through July 27, allows Warriors fans and specialty coffee nerds to sample Bigface's beans in filter and espresso drinks for the first time. The popup was quite the scene. But as an on-the-record coffee obsessive, I had to know: Is Jimmy Butler's coffee worth the hype? The six-time all-star began his coffee business during the 2020 NBA Bubble tournament, an abridged season carried out behind closed doors at a Florida complex at the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic. A coffee nerd, Butler began selling brews out of his hotel room to his teammates who wanted something better than Folgers from a coffee maker. 'Coffee is just another vessel to sit down with people and talk about what we have in common,' Butler told me in an interview at the popup Monday. The venture has since grown to include a Miami flagship location and a roasting contract with Onyx Coffee Lab, a massive specialty coffee roaster headquartered in Arkansas. Butler's company sources the raw coffees and sells the roasted product. Online, some have raised an eyebrow at the company's high prices, with 250-gram coffee bags that run from $30 to $40. Skeptics of celebrity-backed foods and luxury products (of which I am both) naturally ask what coffee is worth that. (High-end coffees from some of the Bay Area's better roasters often fall between $18 to $40 for a bag.) So, as a coffee fanatic, who has sunk good money into luxe coffees from top tier roasters — from Tokyo and Copenhagen's big hitters to the Bay Area's boundary pushing experts — I also had to find out for myself. When I saw Butler had collaborated with football (soccer) powerhouse club Paris Saint-Germain (he's a fan), I purchased two bags. And I have some news: Bigface has really good coffees. Single origin offerings include a Colombian coffee from the Huila province ($40 for a bag) with pronounced, sweet notes of black tea and brown sugar when brewed as a pourover. The Rwandan coffee (also $40 for a bag) appears to be Bigface's ace offering. My pourover showed good sweetness, between prunes and dates, with acidity akin to stone fruits. As my pour over cooled down, I could appreciate some of the dry fig notes mentioned on the box. 'When I tasted it I thought it was really amazing,' Butler told me of the Rwandan offering. Because we all eat, or drink, with our eyes first, Bigface packaging looks and feels premium. The coffee comes inside a sturdy cardboard shell with raised lettering and logos that looks like a high-end sneaker box. Getting to the beans is like unboxing a new iPhone, only the box has been perfumed with resting coffee. Pull up the top to reveal an opaque white pouch containing eight ounces of whole coffee beans. For anyone who just wants to try a coffee and snap a photo, the menu at the popup is straightforward, with espresso drinks ($4-$9), cold brew ($8), pourovers ($10) and matcha ($8). 'Formulas,' Bigface brand speak for special drinks ($10), include a cherry cream soda and a refreshing latte spiked with coconut water and topped with coconut cold foam. The menu at the cafe also includes a $100 flight of three coffees. Butler, who signed a two-year, $112 million with the Warriors, appears to have expensive tastes. 'It's not a joke,' he said, 'I have for sure spent the most at Bigface stores than anyone by a long shot because when I order a coffee I have to pay $100.' His second-round pick: a foamy oat milk cappuccino. Will the Warriors' star be making coffees at his popup? Rodney Mustelier, who Butler identified as his own personal barista, leads the coffee bar, but there may be an opening for Butler to show off one of his talents off the court. 'I made a promise that someone will get my first coffee, so I think I have to do it,' Butler said. 'Just don't look at my latte art since I haven't been practicing.'

Jimmy Butler's Coffee Pop-Up Is Sceney as Hell

is the associate editor for the Northern California and Pacific Northwest region writing about restaurant and bar trends, coffee and cafes, and pop-ups. Golden State Warriors' Jimmy Butler III has, at long last, taken his coffee brand BIGFACE to his adopted home of San Francisco. The temporary residency runs from Thursday, July 10, through Sunday, July 27, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. On opening day, the sun was shining, and expectations could not have been higher. How's the coffee? Would you get one of the T-shirts? Will Butler be there, working the bar like a common barista? From the jump: Jimmy Butler III was not on-site at BIGFACE's opening, sorry to say. Whether or not he pulls any shots by the end of this installation is anyone's guess; with loads of these hype pop-ups, the details are intentionally scarce. This scene report should alleviate a bit of the mystery. Here's what to know before pulling up to BIGFACE on 22nd Street in the Mission. Paolo Bicchieri The Wait Eater SF arrived on the scene before opening at 9 a.m. A line crawled around the corner, onto San Jose Avenue. Clocking in at about 8:50 a.m. (sans coffee!), the wait took about 30 minutes. The line was fast moving, though, all things considered; once inside the BIGFACE cafe, there didn't seem to be any time limit on how long one could mill about, order coffee, and buy merch. A worker for the pop-up brought three flavors of iced BIGFACE coffee in a grocery basket to attendees. For free! But this was opening day — a smart guest should anticipate a much shorter wait on weekdays going forward, and big, explosive lines on upcoming sunny Saturdays and Sundays. Paolo Bicchieri The Vibe Imagine all the minimalism and preciousness of a third-wave specialty cafe. Now, picture the exact opposite. From the line through to the La Marzoco, vibes at BIGFACE skew much more toward hype culture and a meet and greet at ComicCon. Fans showed up in prior BIGFACE drop gear, most likely from Miami or San Diego. The team from San Francisco's own Fellow Coffee came as a group; a born-and-raised San Franciscan who considers himself a cigar and coffee connoisseur said he's been looking for good coffee in the Mission since Philz closed. There were platoons of influencers making content. Once inside, the ambiance is sort of Nintendo store-ish. Phones are out left and right, blending in amongst the pop-up's chrome and red color scheme. Interestingly, much respect is paid to former tenant Lucca Ravioli. Shirts (which run $75) are scribed in Italian, with small riffs on the Golden Gate Bridge on the chest. The staff are in swag, and attendees are keyed up and chipper. There's a bar against the window and four or so tables. Still, the vibe doesn't seem to be to hang out for long — more of a grab and go energy, though that could slow down past opening day. Paolo Bicchieri The Menu BIGFACE is not the cost-conscious consumer's cafe. It's $100 for a coffee flight, like at other BIGFACEs of yore. It's $10 for a pour-over, though the pour-over 'wasn't working' an hour into the first day of service. (An $8 cold brew should do the trick.) It's $40 for a box of BIGFACE's Rwanda washed filter coffee, with 'ciao' splayed across the front of the futuristic parcel-looking box. That said, Black Jet Bakery was tapped to provide croissants and other pastries. Nodding to Lucca Ravioli again, there are, inexplicably, boxes of spaghetti, Graza bottles of olive oil branded with BIGFACE smiles, jars of marinara sauce, you get the idea. Though the pour-over cannot be reviewed, the team seemed quick-working and friendly, and the cold brew had a hint of sweetness in a drink infamously made dark and fudgy. A win! A billboard promoting the BIGFACE installation unfurled in real time throughout the morning. Paolo Bicchieri The Verdict BIGFACE is rad! BIGFACE is cool. BIGFACE is the future of coffee — celebrity partnerships taken to a niche, logical extreme. That is to say that, rather than an Emma Chamberlain-ish spin where the coffee can feel like an arm of a larger business program, Butler's coffee is well-roasted, well-made, and, well, expensive. For many new Mission dwellers, this price point won't be an issue. Come by for a chance to be in a random influencer's video and to drink excellent coffee. This Warriors Baller Is Bringing His Coffee Pop-Up to San Francisco

is the associate editor for the Northern California and Pacific Northwest region writing about restaurant and bar trends, coffee and cafes, and pop-ups. Today is a tremendous day for the no-longer-so-niche community fastidiously following the NBA and specialty coffee. Golden State Warriors' Jimmy Butler III will finally bring his Supreme-esque coffee brand BIGFACE to the Bay Area. He'll begin his work here with a two-week pop-up at digital payment company Square's temporary Corner Store takeover of the former Lucca Ravioli space on 22nd and Valencia streets. The residency will run Thursday, July 10, through Sunday, July 27, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.. 'San Francisco's coffee culture is legendary, making the city an ideal fit for BIGFACE,' Butler wrote in the company's press release. 'Coffee brings people from all different backgrounds together, so partnering with Square to bring BIGFACE to the Mission is the perfect way to connect more deeply with the Bay Area and show love to a community that's embraced me.' Jimmy Butler III is a huge fan of specialty coffee. Square / BIGFACE The menu will include espresso drinks, cold brew, pour-over, and bags of the hard-to-find coffee, and exclusive merch will be available to purchase. BIGFACE infusions for the drinks include vanilla, salted caramel, and strawberry. This installation space, a joint operation between Square and nonprofit SF New Deal, has seen events with local chefs and food professionals including Dolores Deluxe owner Ramzi Budayr and small business advocate Vas Kiniris. This six-time NBA All-Star's coffee is absolutely no celebrity slapdash rip-off. Beginning during the 2020 NBA Bubble in Florida, Butler, his fellow players discovered, simply loved coffee — a lot. His social media exploits got him linked with Arkansas-based Onyx Coffee Lab, a specialty coffee font of wisdom. Now Onyx sources, roasts, and distributes his coffees. The only permanent spaces for BIGFACE in Miami and San Diego sell coffee flights for $100. The pop-up marks Butler's first foray into bringing his coffee to San Francisco, where he's been a player since February 2025. Losing Stephen Curry to injury was supposed to be the nail in the coffin for the Golden State Warriors, but a tightly-contested Game 3 shows their series against the Minnesota Timberwolves is far from over. With just under eight minutes remaining in Game 3, the Warriors held an 82-77 lead and seemed poised to pull out a fantastic upset that would allow Curry more time to heal and potentially get back for the end of the series. Unfortunately, not having their calming captain on the floor resulted in four consecutive misses and two turnovers, vaulting the Timberwolves to an 86-82 lead, which they would not relinquish. Jimmy Butler led the team in scoring with 33, adding seven rebounds and seven assists, while reserve forward Jonathan Kuminga added 30 off the bench. In tightly contested games like these, it's often the team with the best player that comes out on top. Such was the case in Game 3 for the Timberwolves, as superstar guard Anthony Edwards scored 36 points to will his team to victory. Of those 36 points, 13 came in the fourth quarter, on 4-for-6 from the field (3-for-5 3-pointers). Julius Randle had a fantastic game as well, scoring 24 points to go with 10 rebounds and 12 assists, becoming just the second Timberwolves player to have a playoff triple-double, joining legend Kevin Garnett.
