Nagpur slaughterhouses and meat shops to remain shut on August 15
The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Tuesday announced that all slaughterhouses and meat shops within city limits would remain closed on August 15 on the occasion of Independence Day and Janmashtami, which falls on the same day as per Marathi calendar. According to a notice issued by Rajesh Bhagat, deputy commissioner, Department of Solid Waste Management, 'All slaughterhouses and meat shops within NMC limits shall remain shut, and action will be taken by the civic flying squad against violators.' The notice was issued in accordance with a Maharashtra Government directive, officials said, adding that the decision for the Janmashtami closure of meat shops was approved by the municipal commissioner. On Monday, the Kalyan Dombivali Municipal Corporation (KDMC) ordered the closure of all slaughterhouses and meat shops on August 15. The restriction will apply to all licensed butchers dealing in goats, sheep, chicken, and large animals and remain in force from midnight on August 14. The Opposition has criticised the move, with NCP (SP)'s Jitendra Awhad asking if residents are being told what to eat on Independence Day and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray calling for the KDMC commissioner's suspension. 'Who is the commissioner to tell us what to eat and what not to? Bridges are collapsing, roads are in terrible shape, and instead of fixing them, the administration is busy banning food,' Thackeray said. Awhad also said he planned to hold a mutton party on Friday to protest the restrictions. Vishwanath Bhoir, Kalyan MLA from the ruling Shiv Sena, sought to defend the decision, arguing that being vegetarian for one day should not be an issue.

Khatik community and opposition leaders protest against KDMC order to shut meat shops on Aug 15
Kalyan: The Hindu Khatik community, traditionally engaged in the meat trade, has opposed the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) order to keep all meat shops closed on Aug 15. The community has warned that if the order is not withdrawn, it will stage a protest by setting up a meat shop outside the KDMC office on Independence Day. Local Shiv Sena MLA Vishwanath Bhoir had supported the KDMC directive, stating that "no one will be harmed by not eating meat for a day". Opposition leaders have criticised the decision, calling it an infringement on individual freedom. He declared that he would personally visit a meat shop in Kalyan on Aug 15 in defiance of the ban. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Dipesh Mhatre has also voiced his objection. Representatives of the Khatik community on Monday argued that instead of imposing such restrictions, the civic body should focus on addressing pressing civic issues like pothole-ridden roads. Kalyan-Dombivli civic body bans meat sale, slaughter on Independence Day; NCP(SP) leader Jitendra Awhad plans ‘mutton party'
The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has ordered the closure of all slaughterhouses and meat shops in its jurisdiction for 24 hours on August 15, Independence Day. The civic body said the restriction will apply to all licensed butchers dealing in goats, sheep, chicken, and large animals, and will remain in force from midnight on August 14. The notice, signed by Kanchan Gaikwad, Deputy Commissioner, Licensing, warns that action will be taken under sections 334, 336 and 394(A) of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, 1949, if any meat is sold or animals are slaughtered during the period. The order comes at a time when the KDMC is under administrative rule, with the commissioner functioning as the state government's representative. The Opposition has sharply criticised the move, terming it 'food policing'. Nationalist Congress Party (SP) leader Dr Jitendra Awhad alleged that the government was 'fueling a vegetarian–non-vegetarian divide' after having 'exhausted other social controversies'. He questioned whether residents were now being told what to eat on Independence Day and argued that such a directive could not have been issued without state-level approval. 'My plan is to host a mutton party at the spot. The Maharashtra Government should just announce the date,' Awhad said, adding that he will eat mutton in Kalyan-Dombivli on Friday to defy the order. Terming the decision 'unacceptable', NCP (SP) parliamentarian Suresh Mhatre said food choices are deeply rooted in cultural traditions, particularly in the coastal Agri-Koli community, which consumes both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. 'Such a ban cannot be imposed,' he stated. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray too joined the criticism, calling for the KDMC commissioner's suspension. 'Who is the commissioner to tell us what to eat and what not to? Bridges are collapsing, roads are in terrible shape, and instead of fixing them, the administration is busy banning food,' Thackeray said. Defending the order, Shiv Sena MLA from Kalyan, Vishwanath Bhoir, said there was no public objection and that being vegetarian for one day should not be an issue. 'If people follow become vegetarian for one day, what is the harm? Criticism is the job of the Opposition,' he added.

Kalyan Civic Body Orders Closure Of Meat Shops On August 15, Sparks Row
Thane/Mumbai: The Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation's order banning the sale of meat on Independence Day has triggered a row, drawing sharp reactions from the Opposition NCP (SP) and Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders who called it an infringement of people's food choices. Responding to the notice issued by the KDMC, NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad on Sunday said he would host a mutton party on August 15 to highlight the "freedom" of subjective food preferences. As per the KDMC order, all slaughterhouses and shops of licensed butchers of goats, sheep, chickens, and large animals must remain closed for 24 hours from midnight of August 14 till midnight of August 15. The civic body warned of action under the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, 1949, if any animal is slaughtered or meat is sold during the specified period. When contacted, KDMC Deputy Commissioner (Licenses) Kanchan Gaikwad told PTI that a similar order was issued every year since 1988 as part of a civic resolution. Ms Gaikwad, who signed the order, emphasised the move was in keeping with long-standing administrative resolutions to ensure public order and observance of important national occasions. However, the Opposition was not convinced. "I am planning to host a mutton party that day. On the day we got freedom, you are taking away our freedom to eat what we want," Mr Awhad, who represents the Kalwa-Mumbai assembly constituency in Thane district, told PTI. Earlier on Sunday, Mr Awhad stated on X, "This is too much. Who are you to decide what people will eat and when?" Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray demanded the suspension of the KDMC commissioner for dictating the food choices of people. "Who is the commissioner to tell people whether they can eat non-veg or not?" he asked. कोण कधी मांसाहार करावा हे पण सरकार ठरवणार का ? #kalyandombivali — Awhad (@Awhadspeaks) August 10, 2025 Bhiwandi MP and NCP (SP) leader Suresh Mhatre too strongly opposed the restriction, calling it an infringement of people's traditional food habits. "What one should eat and what one shouldn't is a question of the people. The local fishermen community eats vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. Food habits are shaped by customs prevalent in different parts of the state. The ban on the sale of meat is incomprehensible," Mhatre told reporters. He said dietary preferences are deeply tied to cultural identity, particularly in coastal communities like the Agri Koli, and that civic authorities should respect these traditions. Kalyan (West) MLA and ruling Shiv Sena leader Vishwanath Bhoir, however, defended the KDMC's move. "People are not opposing the notice. What's the issue if one doesn't eat meat one day? The Opposition only knows how to criticise," he said.
